Reflection on the Written Assessment

Ivan Lee Y9 Peace

In this assessment, it required us to analyze a given travel writing article. We had a total of
three periods for this assessment, with one lesson annotating and the rest writing up the
analysis. We had to highlight the techniques used in the article and to also answer the guiding
questions provided by the assessment.

In this written assessment on “Arabian Sands’, I am extremely disappointed with the results
and the analysis I’ve made. I got a total score of 4 and its one of my worst ever English
assessments in Secondary. I think the main reason for this is because I wasn’t prepared well
enough and my analytical skills were not good. Throughout the assessment, I did not feel
confident in using the information and presenting it. This is because I still wasn't too sure about
the formatting and what we should write in an analysis. In addition, I also find trouble in finding
the techniques used in the article. This is because I’m always worried that the things I’ve
highlighted are either not relevant or it’s totally wrong. I find using communication skills useful
in this assessment because it helps me to write the paragraphs better. I understand how to
communicate thoughts and information adequately through interactions and I am able to use
this knowledge in my writing, however, my understanding of the text wasn't great and thus
dragged my overall score down. Before the assessment, I didn’t really prepare much. I just go
through everything I’ve noted down during class and I’ve tried analyzing it with other articles I
found online. Overall, I feel like I could have done a little more to the writing and analysis of the
text.

I feel that the whole assessment did not go as well as expected. All the criteria scored an
average score and I felt disappointed that I couldn’t get higher marks. I would like to think that
I am particularly strong at any ATL skills and that all my ATL skills are around the same level. I
believe that there are definite improvements for all the ATL skills. From the beginning to the
end, I think that I’ve demonstrated my strength when I am able to complete the assessment
without using the full given time. I believe this demonstrated my strength because it shows
that I am able to complete the work quickly. However, the analysis was absolute rubbish and I
should have spent more time improving that.

Next time if I do this assessment again, I will remember to always remember to include all
the required categories in the essay. In order to achieve this, I will have to do a little more
research and be more focused during class. I will also have to improve my transfer skills as well
because I am not able to combine knowledge and skills from a never seen before context for
my analysis. I would like to work on my criteria A and D because I think that my analyzing skills
are not good enough to achieve my true potential as I always make inattentive mistakes and
my knowledge is not good enough. Furthermore, I would also like to improve my language
usage. Considering that using language is crucial to English, I think that it would benefit all the
upcoming assessment if I could improve this.
