I. OBJECTIVES
A. Content Standard The learner demonstrates understanding of the basic concepts of trigonometry.
B. Performance Standard The learner is able to apply the concepts of trigonometric ratios to formulate and solve real-life problems with precision and accuracy.
The learner illustrates the angles of elevation and angles of depression. (M9GE-IVd-1)
At the end of the lesson, the learner will be able to:
C. Learning Competency/Objectives a. define angles of elevation and depression;
b. identify angle of elevation and angle of depression; and
c. solve problems involving angle of elevation and angle of depression.
II. CONTENT Topic: Angle of Elevation and Angle of Depression

2. In a 45° − 45° − 90° triangle, given one leg which is one-unit, what is the value of sin 45°?
A. Reviewing Previous Lesson
3. In a 45° − 45° − 90° triangle, given one leg which is one-unit, what is the value of tan 45°?
4. In 30° − 60° − 90°, if the hypotenuse measures two units, what is the value of sin 30?
5. In 30° − 60° − 90°, if the hypotenuse measures two units, what is the value of about tan 60°?

(The teacher will play the situation.)

B. Establishing Purpose of the Lesson

In an airport, two people who are close friends are working there. One is a pilot and the other one is an air traffic
controller. One day, a pilot is assigned to fly an airplane, and they will arrive to their destination by night. When the
time to land came, a sudden problem occurs, the airport has a circuit problem wherein the landing area lights are
affected. The pilot cannot see the right place to land because it is too dark. He called his friend, the air traffic controller
for a help. They only know the altitude of the airplane from the ground. If you were the air traffic controller, what
advise can you give to the pilot in order for him to land the plane safely?

Is there any mathematical concept they would use to help them?

Yes, there is. It is the concept of angle of elevation and angle of depression, which will be our topic for today.

The angle of depression is the angle from the line of sight of the observer to the object below.

The angle of elevation is always above the line of sight and the angle of depression is below the line of sight.

Remember that the angle measure will always start from the horizontal sight of the observer to the object.

“Who Am I?”
Identify whether <a is an angle of elevation or angle of depression.

Practicing New Skills #2 1. A tower is 15.24 m high. At a certain distance away from the tower, an observer determines the angle of elevation to the top of it
is 41°. How far is the observer from the base of the tower?
2. A four-meter ladder leans against a tree. If the top of the ladder makes an angle of 40° with the tree, how high up the tree does
the ladder reach?
3. Adrian is flying a kite. He is holding the end of the string at a distance of 1.5 m above the ground. If the string is 20 m long and
makes an angle of 30° with the horizontal, how high is the kite above the ground?
Question 1 Question 2
The angle of elevation from a boat to the top of a 92-meter A ladder 8 meters long leans against the wall of a building. If
hill is 12°. How far is the boat from the base of the hill? the foot of the ladder makes an angle of 68° with the ground,
how far is the base of the ladder from the wall?

F. Developing Mastery Question 3 Question 4

From the top of a cliff 280 meters high, the angle of A 6-meter ladder leans against a tree. If the foot of the ladder
depression of a boat is 25°. How far from the base of the makes an angle of 80° with the ground, how high up the tree
cliff is the boat? does the ladder reach?
