The advancements that have been made over the past hundred years or more are too

numerous to count. But has there been progress? Some people would say that the vast

number of advancements tells us we have made progress. Others, however, disagree, saying

that more is not necessarily better and that real progress—in politics, literature, the arts,

science and technology, or any other field—can be achieved only when an advancement truly

improves the quality of our lives.

Assignment:

Have modern advancements truly improved the quality of people's lives? Plan and write an

essay in which you develop your point of view on this issue. Support your position with

reasoning and examples taken from your reading, studies, experience, or observations.

It is true that there have been several improvements over the past hundred years in different
fields such as art, science and technology; however, it is important to remark specially
technological advancements because such have influenced several life aspects, and they have
also changed the way humans execute their daily activities.

One important advancement prompted by technology has taken place within the
communications field as people are now able to connect with other individuals who are in
different locations on the world, making it possible to close international business, perform
distance studies and even access global banks of information.

Additionally, technology has further revolutionized the energy sector because currently it is
possible to use renewable sources to generate energy without incurring in additional expenses
that combustion fuels generated. Another aspect affected by technological advancements is
transportation since today a person can move about in varied kinds of vehicles that are propelled
by non-combustion motors.

Therefore, all the novelties that have been fomented have grandly improved the quality life of
people because currently many individuals have come to carry out the same activities than prior
but to do so using less resources and effort. In this comfortability regard, one may say that
applied technology has facilitated the tasks of the modern-day city dweller and thus their quality
life style.

All in all, people have come to acquire a much-desired state which is freedom and an excess of
time that responsible people use to enhance their skills by acquiring new concepts and abilities.
Thus, people use their free time to read more e-books, to investigate and study the different
kinds of phenomena which take place throughout the world and across all cultures and within a
virtuous feedback learning circle.

Finally, it would be a non-comprehensive perspective analysis if one were not to mention that a
la par to these advancements, there has also been a side effect to supplying the high tech
demand as the materials and human work force required to build this technology takes its toll
upon the most less favored segment of many societies which must surrender their labor and
land resources to fulfill demand. For these people, it is clear that technology has had a more
detrimental effect than a positive one as they are exposed to toxicity product of the minerals
required to construct the devises that hold the technological apparatuses that modern society
finds a necessity.

it is possible that people use this free time to develop their physical condition; however, they
usually prefer to spend their free time in lazy activities such drinking or watching TV programs
which do not contribute with their development.

As a conclusion, I opine that the different type of advancements have helped to improve the
quality life of the humanity; however improvement of quality life should not only depend of the
modern advancements in technological, social or political areas, but also of the values of the
society in order to became it sustainable.
