MAAP CONVENES FIRST PMA-PNPA-MAAP

INTER-ACADEMY DEBATES
As envisioned to be a recurring debate tournament, the Maritime Academy of Asia and the
Pacific through the MAAP Debate Society hosted the 1st Philippine Inter -academy Debate
Championship (PIADC) last August 5-7, 2016 at the Multi-Purpose Hall, Main Campus. It was
participated by the Philippine National Police Academy (PNPA) and the Philippine Military
Academy (PMA).

The said tournament followed a Modified British Parliamentary format wherein no cadets from
the same institution will form a team and in every round there will be different debate partners
from the different institution. With this, more engagement between institutions was
forwarded.

Midn. 2cl Ronnie Jason Boquilon and Cadt. 2cl Sushmita Elliot Calejesan formed a team in the
Grand Finals and were able to win the 1st PIADC. Furthermore, Midn. 2cl Karl Japeth Rosal from
MAAP emerged as the Finals Best Speaker and the Tournament’s Over-all Best Speaker. Cdt.
2cl Fermin Sudaypan and Midn. 2cl Boquilon tied as the tournament’s overall 2nd best speaker.
Cdt. 2cl Cedric Llyod Castillo and Cdt. 2cl Calejesan were awarded runner -up best speakers
from PNPA. Likewise the same awards were given to Midn. 2cl Rolando Meneses Jr. and Midn.

tournament, they were able to engage with the other participants through live streaming video
chats.

The PIADC is an exclusive gathering of cadets from regimented institutions who share a
common passion and
excitement in the art
of debating. In this
tournament, the
participants will have
the opportunity to,
not only develop their
critical thinking and
public speaking skills,
but gain experience and socialize not only in a competitive environment but also in a
collaborative set-up. It has a primary purpose to develop partnership and camaraderie among
academies through sharp and dynamic discourse.
On the 5th to 7th of March 2016, two of the most prestigious academies that possess
regimentation in their trainings, the Maritime Academy of Asia and the Pacific (MAAP) and the
Philippine Military Academy (PMA) joined for the MAAP-PMA Collaborative Debates held at the
Maritime Academy of Asia and the Pacific-Kamaya Pt., Mariveles, Bataan.

The activity started with socials and tours within Bataan aimed to ignite the cooperation
between the cadets. Afterwards, five preliminary debate rounds were conducted adjudicated
by Kelly Abagat (UPLB), Samantha Eala (ADMU), and Andrea Guevarra (ADMU), personalities
well-known for their achievements in debate and adjudication.

In the Finals round, Midn. 1cl Zypert Barcelo and Cadet 1cl Laturnas, Midn 2cl Karl Japeth Rosal
and Cadet 1cl Pulido, Midn. 2cl Andre’ Chad Acosta and Cadet 1cl Laride, Midn 2cl Kenneth
Carino and Cadet 3cl Dacuba, were the respective team-ups. In the end, the team of 1cl Barcelo
and 1cl Laturnas was hailed as the Champion of the Finals Round. Additionally, 1cl Barcelo was
declared the Finals Best Speaker.

The motions were about issues such as peace, security, honor, and among others. The debates
were designed so that the team-ups must always consist a MAAP and a PMA cadet. The debate
was in the British Parliament Format.
