BOYLEING POINTS
It Was Time
The Rockaway Times is five.
We launched this sucker five
years ago this week and I can’t
decide if it feels like five or fifty.
It really started out as a mess.
We had a typo before we even
published our first edition. The
day before the paper launched,
the big, beautiful Rockaway
Times sign was hung on the
front of our store. (We occupied
the booth, current home of Belle
Rock car service, at the time). It
looked great except for the miss-
ing “a.” The sign said Rockway,
not Rockaway. “Take it down!” I
shouted in panic.
They fixed it and put it back up
and all was good. We decided
to add an awning as well. That
lasted about three days before a
truck going into the next-door
parking lot knocked it down.
Misspelled signs and crushed
awnings were the least of my
headaches. I realized the person
I had started this business with
was a very bad fit. After the first
edition, I ended the almost-part-
nership and set out solo. And
she set out to destroy The Rock-
away Times. She called advertis-
ers and printers and told them I
was a blankety-blank so-and-so
and not to do business with me.
That caused some difficulties.
You’re trying to get a new busi-
ness going and there’s some-
one hell-bent on making you
fail. Badmouthing me wasn’t
enough, though. She then start-
ed a grudge newspaper. Anyone
remember The Rockaway Beat?
I think it ran for seven weeks.
For other reasons, said person is
now finishing up a stretch in fed-
eral prison.
Anyway, while trying to fend
off her attacks, plenty of pain
was self-inflicted. An advertiser
wanted to add a coupon: $4 off

a dozen cupcakes. We ran an ad
that said $4 for a dozen (which
equals about 33 cents a cupcake).
Dumb of me. But soon, I proved
even dumber. I ran the wrong ad
again the following week. I think
that was the low point.
I felt like quitting, but my
salesman, Fred Marino, sold
me on staying with it and re-
minded me that readers were
generally happy with the new
paper in town. He said advertis-
ers wanted to be in a newspaper
that highlighted good stuff in
Rockaway. (Yep, I was sold and
now he’ll probably now ask for
a commission).
Less than a month after launch,
Pat McVeigh (with big help from
Carol Kelleher) came to my res-
cue and started making sense of
the books. She’s been my right-
hand man ever since.
Katie McFadden started writ-
ing for us in August and in Octo-
ber she was asking me if the pa-
per was gonnna make it. I think
my answer was, I dunno. Katie is
still here and now my answer is, I
think so.
Of course, I couldn’t have done
it without unwavering support
on the home front. I worked cra-
zy hours, always bordering on
going insane but my wife, Kathy,
was a rock and helped in direct
and subtle ways. I got help from
my mother, too. She talked up the
paper to friends and businesses
and helped with proofreading—
which is kind of funny because
her obituary in The Rockaway
Times had a typo. It was the first
sign she’d be missed. And still is.
Honestly, no one had the cold
heart to tell me about that typo.
But I’ve heard plenty about some
others. We meant to report that
there was a crab boil but some-
how it showed up in the paper
as crap boil. We got some shit
for that. (Sorry, Mom—I’m still
coarsening the language).
Yeah, mistakes, we’ve made a
few (ok, a few hundred) but the
paper has won awards every year
at The New York Press Associa-
tion convention. Pretty good for
a free paper. You know what they
say, the best things in Rockaway
are free. The Rockaway Times is
still free and, we say, worth every
penny.
I recently flipped through that
first issue, June 26, 2014, and
see that that Rockaway WISH,
The Wharf, CROM, Rockaway
Properties, World Champion
Karate, Curran's, Boarders, Kim-
ball Construction, Walsh Prop-
erties, and Blue Bungalow Spa
(now Spa Rockaway) were in the
first-ever edition. I’m happy to
say, they’re all still around and
they're still advertising with us.
McManus Mechanical, Hot
Yoga, Bungalow Bar, Neponsit
Realty, UMA’s, Zwerling, Ams-
tel Auto, Nicole Frontera, Casi-
no Towing, Glider’s Gym, Cui-
sine by Claudette, and Brady &
Marshak discovered us the next
week and have stayed with us

some serious loyalty!
Plenty of others joined in the
first few weeks, just to be nice,
just to give a new business a
boost. And I remember who you
are! I try to do the same with new
businesses now. If they mess up,
they know it. They don’t have to
be scolded online when they’re
just starting out. We were lucky,
or deaf to bad news, because the
encouragement we got from YOU
kept us going.
Oh, we can’t say Happy An-
niversary to ourselves without
giving a big shout out to the Be
Well, Be Happy women (Helen
and Paulette) who have written
from week one. Pete Mahon,
the Broad Channel, Between The
Bridges guy (Hey Pete, you’re due
to write again), was there at the
beginning and so was John Cori.
Ask The Doc by Pete Galvin ar-
rived in September 2014 and he’s
been clockwork ever since.
In that inaugural issue five years
ago, I said hello to Rockaway and
wrote: As for mistakes and grow-
ing pains, I’m only making one
guarantee. We’ll have this right
before the jetties get here.
So, we’ve still got time.

Paddle Out for Dylan Smith
On Sunday, June 23, all are wel-
come to remember and celebrate
the life of Dylan Smith with a me-
morial paddle out.
Smith, a lifeguard and surf-
er, was recognized for his her-
oism on the night of Hurricane
Sandy, in which he went out on
his surfboard to rescue several of
his neighbors from their burn-
ing homes around Beach 130th
Street. Just a few months later, he
died while surfing in Puerto Rico
on December 23, 2012. He was 23.
Since his passing, friends, fami-
ly and the community have joined
together to remember this home-

town hero with a memorial pad-
dle out. On June 23, at around 6
p.m., all are welcome to bring a
board and participate in the pad-
dle out or watch from the shore on
Beach 86th Street. There will be a
get-together after, so people are
also encouraged to bring a towel
or beach chair to hang out and to
remember the life of a hero, a son,
a brother, a lifeguard and a friend
to many.
There will be t-shirts for sale. All
proceeds will go to FACES (Find-
ing a Cure for Epilepsy and Sei-
zures).

THE RT IN 2014
The Rockaway Times first published June 26, 2014. We glanced
through the first edition and found this Back in The Day photo of
Anita Ruderman (that’s before she did Hot Yoga); we saw a list of
elected officials who signed a letter asking the mayor to provide
a Rockaway ferry service; and artist and singer Patti Smith was
putting on a show at Fort Tilden. And the Rockaway Mermaid
Brigade took First Prize at the Coney Island parade. And the pa-
per had a different masthead. The one we use now was created
by Erika Farrell.

Wise Clock at Riis looks great
after being overhauled for the
past six months or so. Think of
it more as a piece of art than
a clock, however. If you use it
to tell time, you’ll be late or
early or thoroughly confused.
The clock has four faces and
it’s not unusual to see at least
three different times. NPS offi-
cials have told us it'll be fixed
but don’t set your clock to it.

Tuesday is a primary voting
day for Democrats as several
people are on the ballot to run
in the general election for the
job of Queens District Attor-
ney. Whoever wins on Tuesday
is very likely to win the general
because Democrats outnum-
ber Republicans by a large
margin in Queens. There are
no term limits for this job, so
whoever wins will likely hold
the position for a long time.

Catholic schools are out for
summer this week; public
schools next. Summer arrives
officially on Friday and here's
a surprise: it's supposed to be
sunny on Saturday.

The Dylan Smith Paddle Out
is Sunday, June 23 around 6:30
p.m. at Beach 86th Street. Dy-
lan was a hero on the night of
Hurricane Sandy, helping peo-
ple to safety as the flood wa-
ters rushed in and fires raged.
Just a couple months later, the
23-year-old died while surfing
in Puerto Rico. The Paddle Out
in his memory supports a cure
for epilepsy and seizures. A
beach get-together will follow,
so bring a beach chair.

Respect the ocean, and
please don’t go in the wa-
ter when lifeguards are off
duty. On Saturday, June 15,
at around 6:50 p.m., a man
and woman had to be rescued
from the waters off of Riis
Park. The woman, 25, later
died. Do not let her death go
in vain. Don’t go in the water
after-hours, and let others,
especially those not from the
area, not to either.

Just as we mention the new
speed cameras by Seagirt
and on Cross Bay Blvd., last
week, another has popped
up at Beach 51st and Edge-
mere Avenue, going uptown.
And expect more. The city
has expanded the program
and plans to add 750 cameras
throughout the five boroughs
over the next year. Starting
July 11, they will be functional
year-round, from 6 a.m. to 10
p.m. on weekdays.

The Wave building at 88-
08 Rockaway Beach Boule-
vard was put up for sale in
late 2018 for $2,495,000 and
is now priced at $2,295,000,
a $200,000 drop in the asking
price. On the residential side,
there’s a big wow in Nepon-
sit. A private home on a beach
block is on the market for,
get ready, $7 million. A few
blocks over, on a 200-block in
Belle Harbor, the price tag on
a house is $3mil.

Stop FEMA Now, a group
formed soon after Hurricane
Sandy, is urging homeowners
to press fed reps (Meeks and
Schumer) to hold back support
for the latest reauthorization of
the National Flood Insurance
Plan. Sometimes the lawmak-
ers have no sense of unintend-
ed consequences. The infa-
mous Bigger-Waters Act had
to be amended in emergency
fashion as potentially devas-
tating flood insurance pre-
miums were set to ruin many
homeowners. The latest bill
got through the House Finan-
cial Services Committee with
unanimous support from
both Democrats and Repub-
licans. As details emerge,
we’ll keep you posted.

Oops! Parks Dept. Mistakenly Snips
Surfer’s Bike Lock

Imagine spending a day en-
joying the beach and returning
to the boardwalk, only to find
your bike lock was clipped?
It happens to someone every
summer, but usually the cul-
prit is a thief that made off
with your bike. However, on
Monday, June 19, the culprit
was the Department of Parks
and Recreation.
A local surfer and Arverne
resident was enjoying an af-
ternoon surf session around
Beach 90th Street, when a
friend ran down to the beach
to warn surfers that their bike
locks were being clipped.
The surfer, who chose to re-
main anonymous, ran up to
the boardwalk, but it was too
late. His heavy-duty bike lock
was in pieces on the ground.
Fortunately, a friend of the
surfer recognized the bike and
stopped the perpetrator before
they could take it. However, he
was surprised to find that the
perpetrators were Parks De-
partment employees.
Their alleged explanation
surprised him even more.
“They told me that they were
there to take all of the bikes
and that it’s illegal to park
our bikes on the boardwalk. I
asked, how am I supposed to
ride my bike to the beach?’
They said I have to lock it to
one of the bike racks, which
there are few of. And they said
that if I parked my bike on the
boardwalk again, it would get
clipped again and removed,”
the surfer claimed.
As a result, the surfer went
off on the Parks employees.
“I had this flashback to when
I was 12 and I watched this
guy take my bike and I ran af-
ter him, crying, trying to get it
back, but I never saw it again.
I just couldn’t believe that in
this case, the people that are
supposed to be doing good,
were the ones doing bad. I had
this blowout and used some
words I’m not proud of. The
staff was extremely profes-
sional and courteous, and I

was out of line, but they were
just taking orders from some-
one else,” he said.
The surfer later posted about
the incident to his popular In-
stagram account, Boardporn,
which features photos of surf-
boards from around the world,
and has close to 200,000 fol-
lowers. He posted a photo of
the broken lock, along with
the message, “No more lock-
ing up bikes on the boardwalk
in Rockaway Beach, NY. This is
effective as of 5:30 p.m. today
per the order of the New York
City Parks Department.”
However, according to Parks,
this isn’t the case. It was all a
misunderstanding. Accord-
ing to a Parks spokesperson,
nothing has changed about a
practice that locals and visi-
tors have done for decades—
chaining their bike to the
boardwalk rails.
“There’s no change in poli-
cy. When this issue occurred,
supervisors were on hand and
spoke directly to the patrons
to clarify the situation and
apologize to the bike owner.
We always try to resolve these
things amicably, and wouldn’t
make a broad policy change
without notifying the commu-
nity first,” the Parks rep said.
The surfer whose chain was
clipped denied receiving an
apology or an explanation.
However shortly after he left,
other surfers that confronted
the Parks staff were told by
a supervisor that they could
leave their bikes chained to
the boardwalk. One of those
surfers said earlier in the
day, Parks staff was observing
an abandoned bike that has
been locked to the boardwalk
railing for about a year. She
suspected that the staff that
later started clipping locks,
had a misunderstanding, and
were supposed to remove the
long-abandoned bike only.
This, according to Parks, is
a policy they do follow. “We
only remove bikes for safety
reasons, or if they have been
abandoned. In the case of a
bike that appears abandoned,

we will post a notice

Electeds Follow Up On Future
of Beach 116th Businesses
Senator Joe Addabbo and
Assemblywoman Stacey Phef-
fer Amato are staying on top
of the issue regarding several
Beach 116th properties with-
in an MTA property, possibly
getting the boot. A recent con-
ference call may have bought
the businesses some time.
According to a press release
from the elected officials, last
month, some of the business
owners made them aware
that the MTA may kick out
the current tenants, includ-
ing Last Stop Gourmet Shop,
Joseph A. Otton Tax & Ac-
counting, Beach Cleaners and
Tailors, and A & J Jewelry as
they open up the Request for
Proposal process to find new
tenants for the properties. In
response, Addabbo and Phef-
fer Amato wrote a letter to the
MTA asking that they allow
the businesses to stay in their
property while the RFP pro-
cess is ongoing.

Following up with the issue,
Addabbo and Pheffer Ama-

fice and the MTA to discuss
the future of the businesses,
which currently have month-
to-month leases with the MTA.
In response to the letter,
during the conference call, the
MTA has alerted the elected of-
ficials that the RFP process will
not begin until the first quar-
ter of 2020, so the MTA will try
to work out an agreement with
their current tenants, possibly
allowing their businesses to
stay where they are. The MTA
has also asked for contacts to
the local Chamber of Com-
merce or other community or-
ganizations to include them in
future discussions regarding
the RFP process.

Repairs Need Fixing

This morning I rode my bike
through Riis Park on the board-
walk, which has very dangerous
due to broken concrete in dire
need of repair. As I passed by
the newly-renovated and rein-
stalled clock, I noticed the north
and south faces had the correct
time, the east and west faces
were over 20 minutes fast. More
money wasted!
Then I continued into Fort Til-
den on the beach road. When
I got to the part that was de-
stroyed by Sandy, it was repaired
with “crushed sea shells.” Is it
too much to expect the National
Park Service to repair it proper-
ly?

AmpSurf Fundsaiser Set for June 28

“I was so proud. It was a big
accomplishment for him. When
he takes in a wave, you can hear
everyone cheering and he hears
it and he smiles,” John Welsh
said of watching his son, John,
try surfing.
While watching any child take
in their first wave may be a mo-
ment of pride, for John, it’s noth-
ing short of amazing. Welsh’s
son has Phelan-McDermid syn-
drome, a genetic disorder that
can present a range of symp-
toms including developmen-
tal delay/intellectual disability,
motor skills deficits, delayed or
absent speech, autism spectrum
disorder and minor dysmorphic
features. However little John has
shown that it won’t let it stop
him. Each Monday, he active-
ly participates in Rockaway’s
Special Olympics program at
St. Camillus, and over the past
two years, he’s taken up a new
hobby—surfing, all thanks to
an amazing organization that is
giving kids like John, the oppor-

Marines for six years, and later
lost his leg in a car accident. Just

to share that gift with others, so
he started AmpSurf in California
to help rehabilitate disabled vet-
erans. The mission of the non-
profit soon expanded to include
those with any disability, and to-
day, it has three chapters on the
east and west coasts.
With adaptive surfing becom-
ing bigger and bigger in Rocka-
way, especially with the wound-
ed veterans that come to town
each summer to participate
in such programs, local, John
Roberts, decided it was time
Rockaway had its own chap-
ter. Roberts spearheaded one
for Rockaway and Breezy Point
in 2017, bringing the AmpSurf
program to Hope for the War-
riors when they came to Breezy
Point, and also launching
clinics for those of the Special
Olympics program and any oth-
ers who face a disability.
During each clinic, partici-
pants learn the basics while on
land, before heading into the
water with a group of volunteers,

which help set up each partici-
pant for the perfect wave, while
giving them encouragement
and easing their nerves. Then,
depending on the participant’s
ability, a volunteer will either
push their board to catch a wave,
or join along for the ride to help
stabilize the rider, before anoth-
er group of volunteers meets
them at the shoreline to help
them find their bearings after
hanging ten.
The program has proven to
be a success. In 2017, there was
one clinic in addition to the
one for wounded warriors. Last
summer, there were two held
on Beach 67th, plus the one for
the warriors. This year, there will
be three on Beach 67th Street—
June 29, August 17 and Septem-
ber 14.

manding for anyone.
Otton hopes the fundrais-
er will serve as a way to raise
money and awareness to keep
this rewarding program going.
“It costs $4,700 for each clinic
and this year AmpSurf is doing
three. We’d like to raise enough
money to at least cover one of
the sessions, if not all, so that

Otton said.
For Welsh, the fundraiser is a
way to give back for all the pro-

much interest in sports like
baseball or basketball, but he
loves the water, and he loves
this whole program. Being that
we found something that he
enjoys, and being in a position
to help that program, is very re-
warding,” he said.

since 2016, explains that prac-
ticing yoga or pilates on a sur-
face that is moving—like the
paddleboard—engages the
core muscles and strengthens
other muscles which wouldn't
otherwise be used in earth-
bound practice.
“I teach you how to get on
the board and how to either
balance in a sitting, kneeling
or standing position, and lead
you into yoga or pilates (de-
pending on the class selected)

rents. Personal floatation de-
vices are also provided for all
participants.
“I base the class on a number
of factors including the water
conditions such as wind, high
tide or low tide, the current,
other vehicles in the bay, and of
course, attendees’ fitness and
comfort levels. Anyone can do
this class. You don’t have to a
yogi, acrobat or Olympic gym-
nast. I have taught pregnant
women, people recovering

it’s challenging because differ-
ent muscles are being incorpo-
rated and you have to be com-
pletely mentally present. Yoga
is a mindful activity, and doing
it on a board requires intense
focus because transitioning
between poses requires con-
centration to keep the board
steady,” Matthews said.
So how did born-and bred-
New Yorker, Matthews, get into
SUP yoga? “I trained in modern
dance and gymnastics through
childhood, and started prac-
ticing yoga at my high school,

Music & Art and Performing
Arts, to complement my dance
training. While I attained my
undergraduate degree in an-
thropology at New York Uni-
versity, I worked the front desk
at the Jivamukti Yoga School.
In 2005, I received a full schol-

ready been surfing on and off
a few years and thought SUP
yoga would be right up my ally.
I found a school and signed up
for a class, but when the teach-
er arrived, he wasn’t the yoga
teacher, just a person teaching
paddling. Paddleboarding was
challenging and relaxing, but
I just started trying yoga poses
on my own. When I returned
to NY, I found a SUP yoga
training in the Hamptons, and
signed up, and well, I became
hooked!” Matthews said.
The water yogi said she has
practiced SUP yoga in several
venues but doing it in Jamaica
Bay is something special. “Here
you are on the water, surround-
ed by nature with ducks, geese
and other wildlife, but then
you see the A-train zoom past
or planes flying above, and a
view of the Manhattan skyline.
There is this surreal experience
of being with nature, yet in the
profound reality of being home,
not in some far away exotic
place, but right here surround-
ed by NYC’s fast-paced energy.
I’m a yogi, but foremost a New
Yorker blessed to be a part of
both worlds—both spiritual,
just different, and that feeling
really gets the adrenaline go-
ing,” Matthews shared.

Last November, the 2018
Guideline on the Management
of Blood Cholesterol was re-
leased by the American Heart
Association and the Ameri-
can College of Cardiology. It
replaced the 2013 Guideline.
Lipid-lowering strategies are
designed to lower the risk of
Arteriosclerotic Cardiovascu-
lar Disease, or ASCVD, which
includes heart disease, strokes,
and peripheral arterial dis-
ease. In the 2018 Guideline,
strategies to lower not just total
cholesterol but also “bad” cho-
lesterol, or LDL, were revised.
It is becoming increasingly
apparent that it is LDL that is
responsible for ASCVD. While
HDL, or “good” cholesterol,
has a protective effect on AS-
CVD, the focus is primarily on
lowering LDL.
The Guideline suggests that
for a screening lipid profile,
fasting is not necessary. How-

ever, that does not take into
consideration the fact that tri-
glycerides are very sensitive to
food intake and may be artifi-
cially elevated in a non-fasting
sample. Since the triglyceride
level is used to calculate LDL,
a non-fasting sample may be
accurate only for total choles-
terol and HDL. That is why I
recommend that all lipid pro-
files I perform should be fast-
ing ones. Recommendations
to lower LDL in the Guideline
include primary prevention
of ASCVD, or preventing it in
those who do not have ASCVD,
and secondary prevention,
which is preventing worsening
disease in those who do have
ASCVD. The new guidelines
are much more aggressive than
the 2013 ones. For example, the
recommended strategy for an-
yone, beginning at 20 years of
age or older, with an LDL of 190
or greater who does not have
ASCVD should be high intensi-
ty statin use, the aim being to
get the LDL below 100. High in-
tensity statin use refers to dos-
age—40mg or more of atorvas-
tatin (Lipitor) or 20mg or more
of rosuvastatin (Crestor).
Recommendations for pri-
mary prevention for diabetics
and those at high and inter-
mediate risk for ASCVD is to
lower the LDL to 70. For those
with ASCVD, the recommen-
dation is to get the LDL below
50. While separate studies have
confirmed that statins have a
protective effect on ASCVD,
stains alone may be insufficient
to reach the recommended
goal. Ezetimibe (Zetia) may be
added to reach goal, however it
does not have the protective ef-
fects that have been seen with
statins. Recently, the FDA ap-
proved two new drugs of a new
class to lower LDL levels. They
are proprotein convertase sub-
tilisin/kexin type 9, or PCSK9,
inhibitors. The two new drugs
are evolocumab (Repatha) and
alirocumab (Praluent). Liver
cells have receptors that attach
to and remove lipids, especial-
ly LDL, from the blood. These
receptors are destroyed by the
protein PCSK9. The new drugs
block PCSK9 from destroying
the receptors, thereby lower-
ing LDL. These new drugs also
have shown protective effects,
like statins, against ASCVD.
Side effects from statins are
rare but include myalgias, or
muscle pains, that primarily af-
fect the larger muscles on both
sides of the body. They may
also raise liver enzyme levels,
although this too is not seen
very often. Ezetimibe, which is
not absorbed by the gut, may
cause an upset stomach or di-
arrhea. Side effects with PCSK9
inhibitors are rare, but studies
are still being done and, be-
cause they are new, they are
not yet in widespread use. So,
get to your doctor to assess
your lipid levels and discuss
your risk of developing ASCVD
or having it get worse.

Adjusting Our Thoughts
“The happiness of your life
depends on the quality of your
thoughts.” (Attributed to Mar-
cus Aurelius). Came across
this in one of my notebooks—
the notebooks where I jot
down notes from online yoga
classes, inspiring quotes and
my own studies on different
poses.
Marcus Aurelius came back
to me from my days of study-
ing Latin—he was a philoso-
pher and warrior according to
what has been recorded a long,
long time ago! The human
condition has always been the
same no matter what time pe-
riod. We want to be happy and
healthy, and giving thought
to why we may not be happy
brings rise to our minds and
what and how we think. The
quality of our thoughts I take
to mean what we are actually
saying to ourselves about any
given situation. It is hard to
be happy when devastating
events occur, of course, but
the smaller things that we can
think about in a different way
will cause a different emotion
to some state of happiness,
albeit it not jumping for joy
heavy heart.
Something happens that
causes difficulty. What is the
inner dialogue? If it is going
over and over it again and
again and asking why and
how could this happen now,
etc., etc., there is no getting
out of that circle of thought.
If we change our dialogue
with some words of accept-
ance like maybe this hap-
pened for a reason that will
present itself later, or let me
just accept that this happened
and stop dwelling on the fact
that it happened, and may-
be spend more time on how I
could change the situation or
make it better. Think of it as
spinning outside of the circle
of thought that keeps us from
moving past the situation.
The same holds true in an
emotional situation. We feel a
certain way because of some-
thing someone did or said or
after a long, not great commu-
nication. We feel disappointed
or sad or angry or any one of
the many negative emotions
that can arise. The emotion(s)
and is weighing us down. We
can’t think past it. It takes up
residency within us. First thing
is to accept this as where you
are in this moment in time.
Second is to make the choice
that you do not want to feel an-
gry or whatever it is. That opens
a pathway to ease out of it. One
of the tools I use is with my
breath. I will inhale any posi-
tive, loving thought/word like
“peace” and upon my exhala-
tion, I think the negative word
out. So I’ll inhale “peace” and
exhale “anger” for example.
And I just keep doing it until my
heart feels a little lighter. What
happens next is that our minds
are free to fix the situation or
communicate in a better way,
and often the negative emo-
tion goes away. It is a practice
for sure, best done at first with
little things and then when we
really need a tool, it is there for
us to use.
May you be happy. May you
be free. May you be grateful.
May you let go of things that
do not serve you. May you
have inner peace.

children for doing a good job

sin of all. In one of my favorite
works of literature, The Cru-
cible by Arthur Miller, it is the
protagonist’s tragic flaw. But
in the last few weeks, I have
had to read how proud people
are of their three-, four-, and
five-year-olds for “stepping
up” from nursery to pre-k or
kindergarten. Let’s be honest,
99% of the children I know are
stepping up from nursery to
pre-K and even eighth grade
to high school. The days of
keeping children back a year is
a very small percentage.
My one friend said as we were
discussing all of this pride on
social media, “Let’s be honest,
none of these kids have cured
cancer. Maybe someday they
will, but not yet.”
Chris Rock, the comedian
has a bit about people brag-
ging that they take care of
their kids. He responds by
saying, “That’s what you’re
supposed to do.” So we should
not be overly happy our kids
are doing well in school and/
or sports. “That’s what they’re
supposed to do.”

When I was a young child,
my mother told me I had one
job and that job was to do well
in school. So when I slacked
off and did not do what I was
supposed to do, I would be in
trouble. Some years after my
mother passed away, a wom-
an told me how proud my
mom would be of me for help-
ing my dad with my brother
and sister. I was in my twen-
ties and happy to hear that
compliment because it was
not thrown around a lot in the
1980s.
So let’s get back to realizing
that doing well in school and
playing ten games in a week-
end is not really something
to be proud of. Again you can
say, “Good job Mary.” Not let
your heart be filled with pride
because they have succeeded
in something expected.

Cheers to Another Rockin' Rockstock

Rockstock was a rockin’ good
time. Officially a teenager, the
13th Annual Rockstock and Bar-
rels Festival, proved to be a great
Rockaway tradition that keeps
people coming back for more.
With dozens of local vendors, the
Eastern Surfing Association’s surf
contest, a Surfrider beach clean-
up, skaters of all ages showing off
their skills during the skateboard
contest, and plenty of music
throughout the day, the crowds
came out strong for all that Rock-
stock had to offer.
Folks got to enjoy a lineup that
included local band, the Ecstatic
Madmen, up-and-coming female
songstresses, Lili Roquelin, Mor-
gan Weidinger and Sasha Dob-
son, the man who organizes the
music, Walker Hornung and his
band, Walker and the Brother-
hood of the Grape, featuring other
special guests, and even though
the wind blew strong by the ear-
ly evening, it didn’t keep people
from enjoying Indaculture as they
closed out the festival.
The crowd then headed right
to the Rockaway Beach Golf Club
where the party kept going and
the festival organizers, Jimmy
Dowd of St. James Clothing and
Steve Stathis of Boarders, relaxed
after another job well done.

What? Syracuse? Isn’t once
enough?
My last time in Syracuse years
ago, there was little to see other
than the several feet deep coat-
ing of white on the ground. We
saw the inside of a hotel for three
days as the blizzard raged outside.
Finally, with all planes grounded
but highways open, we made our
way out.
In true Alfred Hitchcock tradi-
tion and the concluding scenes
in “The Birds,” huge snowflakes
clouded the sky as we raced to beat
the next incoming storm. Little
thought was ever given to return-
ing to a town whose greatest asset
seemed to be a major university.
We were wrong.

nary a cloud or snowflake in sight,
the sign for Syracuse on the New
York Thruway loomed ahead of
us. The city had grown tremen-
dously in the intervening years
with a major medical center and
office buildings, none of which
we had come to see.
First stop was the Sheraton Syr-
acuse, a wonderfully central lo-
cation as we were to find out. The
schedule for the next three days
was pretty well packed, and we
were grateful for the roomy and
comfortable accommodations at
the Sheraton.
Not far off was the Sky Armory,
a venue for events and fine din-
ing. Local chefs were on hand to
introduce us to a variety of co-

mestibles that were produced
from local farms in the region.
That was the first sign that things
had truly changed in the city.
The following day we had an
opportunity to both enjoy local
brews at the Heritage Hill Bre-
whouse & Kitchen, a favorite for
locals with a welcoming atmos-
phere where strangers were sim-
ply friends you had not yet met.
Flights of local brews proved to
even those who were not beer
drinkers, that the liquid can in-
deed be enjoyed.
Outside the main bar/dining
area, a smoker was wafting the
scent of barbeque brisket, a dish
to kill for. Smearing BBQ sauce on
the meat was a rather large man
who looked as though he would
be more comfortable on a foot-
ball field as a tackle than a chef.
Chef Thomas Armstrong creat-
ed Tom’s Bootleg BBQ, so called
because it originally had alco-
hol in it. That has since been re-
placed with natural ingredients.

The sauce notes on the bottle that
it comes from “Skinny At Last,”
New York, a play on the town of
Skaneateles. Wherever it comes
from, we purchased several bot-

Sated with local brews and
BBQ brisket, we headed for near-
by Green Lakes State Park. As a
scuba diver who prefers the clear
water of the Caribbean, it was
amazing to see the crystal-clear
lake where every pebble on the
bottom looked as though it was
near the surface. There were peo-
ple fishing, strolling or just sitting
on the dock or shoreline.
If ever there was a perfect spot
for downtime and pure relaxation
with or without the family, Green
Lakes State Park is it. The park
offers glass bottom boats so that
visitors can spot the fish the lake
is stocked with.
Next week waterfalls, rock
climbing and midget car racing
indoors.

“Artistic” Child
Cracking the
Code
of Silence
My daughter on the autism
spectrum is nonverbal. How-
ever, I sometimes envy her
“silence.” As a person, who
is constantly engaging, com-
municating and well, talking,
sometimes I wonder if talking
is overrated. A famous Rumi
quote is “Listen to silence, it
has so much to say.” I’m sure
many of you have heard the
saying, “Empty vessels make
the most noise,” (another fa-
vorite of my grandmum's, by
the way). However, talking is
how we primarily as human
beings communicate our
feelings, wants and needs.
With my daughter, it’s a con-
stant guessing game, and in a
way, I wish she was a “chatty
Kathy.”
I recently did a tour of a spe-
cial-needs school in Manhat-
tan and observed the spec-
trum of autism at its finest.
There was one adorable little
girl, who wouldn’t stop talk-
ing. In one minute, she gave
me the whole breakdown of
what she had for breakfast,
her besties in the classroom
and why she was looking for-
ward to art class. There was
another girl, who was fasci-
nated by my name. She kept
repeating, “Hello Kami. My
friend?” She really wasn’t
talking in complete sentenc-
es, but I was fascinated by
her fixation on my name,
thinking she liked the letters

rhymed with something she
liked. Maybe “Kami,” sound-
ed like, “Mami?” Then there
were other children, who like
my daughter are nonverbal,
but were gleefully screaming
or making excited sounds.
I wondered—what makes
communication meaning-
ful? A host of chatty words
and adjectives, a fascination
with a phonetical sound or
squeals of joy?
I’m one of those people
that when I’m on the bus or
train, you won’t see plugged
into headphones. I love just
gazing, looking at people,
or just daydreaming. It’s my
chance to be silent, and I love
what they call white noise—
natural sounds from the en-
gine of the bus or a plane
zooming above. As I gazed
into oblivion on my com-
mute back from the school to
Rockaway, I wondered about
my daughter. She can’t give
me a breakdown of her day
at school, if she has a tum-
my ache or if someone was
mean to her. I constantly talk
to her. “Soa, how was your
day?” “What do you feel like
having for dinner?” What’s so
funny about that Baby Shark
song that has you giggling
uncontrollably? “Why do you
insist on sometimes only lis-
tening to songs in Spanish?”
I’m so fascinated by what

captures her interest, but of
course the conversation is
always one-sided. Me being
the “chatty Kathy,” and her
being the silent, perhaps wiser
vessel. Just her eyes sometimes
will light up, like a screen tell-
ing a story. It’s like watching
a silent movie. In the early
days, I used to think her lack
of verbosity came from her
dad. Talk about a fella you can
have a one-sided conversation
with!
According to the Oxford dic-
tionary, talking is defined as,
“engaging in speech.” Com-
munication is “the imparting
or exchanging of informa-
tion by speaking, writing, or
using some other medium.”
My daughter is a mindful
communicator. What I ap-
preciated about the school
is their belief that children
don’t necessarily have to be
grouped based on a grade or
age level, but their abilities. I
wholeheartedly support this
because as the admissions
director said, “Just because
a child is nonverbal, doesn’t
mean they are low-function-

reveal her thoughts and de-
sires. Like the Jamaicans say,
“Dat day ah soon come.” I
just need to keep praying and
waiting.

Addabbo Green Lights
Green Light Bill
State Senator Joseph P. Add-
abbo, Jr. gave the green light
to the Green Light Bill, which
will enable undocumented
immigrants to apply for New
York State driver's licenses, a
bill that was recently signed
into law.
Addabbo elaborated on his
position, saying:
“Prior to 2001, undocu-
mented immigrants were
able to apply for and receive
driver's licenses in New York
State. That changed after the
September 11 terrorist at-
tacks, but our counter-ter-
rorism techniques have im-
proved greatly since then,
which significantly negates
security risks.
“Overall, the benefits of en-
abling undocumented immi-
grants to apply for licenses far
outweigh the argument that
those who are in this country

most, it is an important safe-
ty issue for all New York State
residents.
“For example, responsi-
ble motorists will no longer
be placed in circumstances
where they get into accidents
with undocumented and un-
insured immigrants, par-
ticularly in hit-and-run sit-
uations, and are then forced
to pick up the entire tab for
related vehicle repairs. The
increase in the number of in-
sured drivers should decrease
automobile insurance pre-
miums, not increase them,
through a larger pool of insur-
ance revenues. Plus, the last
thing undocumented drivers
will want to do is get into ac-
cidents and draw attention to
themselves.
“Enabling undocumented
·
immigrants to apply for driv-
er's licenses will give all of us
a better idea of who they are
and where they live: informa-
tion that is currently unavail-
able. They will undergo the
same licensing procedures,
and pay the same fees, as
everyone else. They will not
be able to use their licenses
to enter federal buildings or
to fly, and they must provide
valid photo identification to
obtain the license.
“From a fiscal standpoint,
it is estimated that this legis-
lation could raise almost $84
million in state government
revenues over the first three
years, and more than $6 mil-
lion annually thereafter. Even
the State Business Council
supports this bill, and the
experience of Connecticut,
which enacted a similar pol-
icy four years ago, has seen a

good public policy sense, and

The bill was passed in the
Assembly as well with Assem-
blywoman Stacey Pheffer Am-
ato casting a yes vote.
According to reports, a poll
released by Siena College
showed more than 50 per-
cent of New Yorkers surveyed
were against allowing undoc-
umented immigrants to get
driver's licenses.
Governor Cuomo, however,
signed the bill making New
York the thirteenth state to
authorize driver's licenses for
immigrants who entered the
United States illegally.

DBP Shareholders Celebrate Another Win
in HPD & Board Battle
In the battle of Dayton
Beach Park shareholders ver-
sus the New York City Housing
Preservation and Develop-
ment and the board of direc-
tors, things are looking good
for the tenants. Last week, the
Department of Investigation
found that some of the allega-
tions made against the board
were true, and this week, the
board’s corporate counsel
backed out of the case.
On Tuesday, June 18, a
group of Dayton Beach Park
shareholders, represented by
attorney Mike Scala, learned
corporate counsel would no
longer be defending board
members in an Article 78 pro-
ceeding the group brought
against NYC HPD. The share-
holders in the case seek to
compel HPD to provide over-
sight of the board of directors,
accused of improperly using
corporate funds to advance
their personal interests.

"It was egregious that in a
case where shareholders com-
plained about the board using
shareholder money to engage
in self-dealing, including by
using corporate counsel for
their own private matters,
shareholders were expect-
ed to foot the bill for corpo-
rate counsel to represent the
board," Scala said.
When the law firm in ques-
tion, Norris McLaughlin, P.A.,
refused to withdraw from the
case, Scala filed a motion to
disqualify on behalf of the
shareholders. The motion cit-
ed case law that held corpo-

rate attorneys could not repre-
sent shareholders (i.e., board
members) in cases where their
interests were adverse to oth-
er shareholders. Instead of
opposing the motion at Tues-
day's return date in Queens
Supreme Court, the law firm
indicated it would remove it-
self from the case.
"Another small victory for
the shareholders of Dayton
Beach Park," Joanne Smith, a
petitioner in the lawsuit said.
"Between this and the release
of the [Department of Inves-
tigation] memo validating the
shareholders' claims, it has
been a good two weeks."
A recent report from the
city's Department of Investi-
gation substantiated allega-
tions made in the case. Board
members will now have to
face the music on these claims
without the benefit of the cor-
poration's lawyers.

PHEFFER AMATO PASSES LEGISLATION
TO CREATE 9/11 REMEMBRANCE DAY
New York schools are one
step closer to having a man-
datory moment of silence
each September 11, in honor
of those who died that day in
2001.
On Monday, June 17, bill,
A1801-B, which Assembly-
woman Stacey Pheffer Amato’s
sponsored bill, amends the
New York State Education law
to make a special provision for
the observance of a “brief peri-
od of silence” each September
11 at the start of the school day
in schools state-wide, spon-
sored by Assemblywoman Sta-
cey Pheffer Amato, passed the
Assembly. According to the
language in the bill, this would
provide students with the “op-
portunity for silent prayer or
for silent reflection” on the an-
niversary day.
“The terrorist attacks of Sep-
tember 11, 2001 were a defin-
ing moment in the history of
New York City, state, and the
entire country. The tremen-
dous loss caused by this un-

speakable act was most acute-
ly felt by the many citizens
of our great state and city,”
Pheffer Amato said. “This bill
ensures that students in New
York have the chance to learn
about the tragic events of 9/11,
and remember what it means
to everyone that lived through
this terrible moment in our na-
tion’s history.”
“Currently, students gradu-
ating from high school as part
of the Class of 2019 were just
newborns in 2001, and soon
enough there will be no stu-
dents in the national public
school system born at the time
of 9/11. By mandating a brief
moment of silent reflection
every year, we may ensure that
future generations will better
understand this day and its
place in our history,” conclud-
ed Pheffer Amato.
The bill passed through the
Senate Chamber by Senator Jo-
seph P. Addabbo and has been
sent to the Governor for signa-
ture.
BREEZY POINT WORK
PERMITS APPROVED BY
SENATE
A bill, providing a two-year
extension to Chapter 100 of the
Laws of 2013, has passed the
New York State Senate. Spon-
sored by Joe Addabbo, Chapter
100 provides exemptions di-
rected at Breezy Point work per-
mits for resiliency and recovery
in the aftermath of Superstorm
Sandy.
“Thousands of residents have
been subjected to delays under
Rapid Repair, Build It Back, and
other programs at the City lev-
el, creating an urgency for us to
provide residents with at least
two more years to rebuild with
relief from red tape,” Addabbo
said. “I will continue working to
ensure the Breezy Point neigh-
borhood is able to rebuild and
return to living in structurally
sound homes. The fact that we
needed to introduce and pass
an extender bill yet again shows
the magnitude of the devasta-

tion Sandy brought to our con-
stituents in Breezy Point.”
“Nearly seven years after
Hurricane Sandy made land-
fall, many Breezy Point constit-
uents are still tirelessly trying
to rebuild their lives and their
homes in the community they
love. While the storm wreaked
havoc throughout my Senate
district and elsewhere, this
neighborhood was devastated
beyond imagination.
“With the passage of this leg-
islation, we are helping the
people of Breezy Point continue
to move forward and succeed
in the aftermath of Hurricane
Sandy, while sparing them ad-
ditional frustration and expense
in dealing with City bureaucra-
cy,” Addabbo said.
The bill was delivered to and
passed the Assembly. It now
awaits delivery to Governor
Cuomo’s desk.

Amato Requests Mosquito Caribbean Carnival Preview

Spraying For Rockaway
Neighborhoods
What about us? We’ve got
mosquitos too! In a recent NYC
Department of Health and
Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) an-
nouncement regarding mos-
quito aerial spraying, Rocka-
way’s zipcodes were left out.
In response to numerous con-
cerns over mosquito breeding
and the potential spread of
West Nile Virus and Zika Vi-
rus in coastal communities in
southern Queens and Rocka-
way, Assemblywoman Stacey
Pheffer Amato sent a letter to
the DOHMH to request a mos-
quito aerial spraying in the ar-
eas encompassed by zip codes
11693, 11694, 11697, 11414,
and 11417.
"Every summer, families
across southern Queens deal
with the onslaught of mosqui-
tos any time we step outside.
That is why it is so important
to have additional sprayings to
prevent against the potential
risks posed by West Nile Virus
and Zika Virus. I look forward
to hearing back from DOHMH
to see how the city can con-
trol mosquito populations and
what we can all do to stay safe
and healthy this summer," said
Assemblywoman Stacey Phef-
fer Amato.
According to a notice sent
out by the DOHMH, a majority
of the zip codes encompass-
ing the 23rd Assembly District
had been left off of the list
of neighborhoods slated for
sprayings. Pheffer Amato not-
ed in her letter: “I understand
that NYC Dept of Health does
not spray for nuisance mos-
quitoes; however as much of
my district is surrounded by
coastal wetlands, it is crucial
that the city take measures to
ensure that these neighbor-
hoods are protected from the
threats of West Nile Virus and
the Zika Virus.”

glimpse into the Car-
ibbean Carnival in
the Rockaways when
he hosts a kick-off
for the third annu-
al event in collabo-
ration with the West
Indian American Day
Carnival Association
(WIADCA), the Rock-
away Development Revitaliza-
tion Corporation (RDRC), and
NYC the Parks Department.
The Senator’s preview will in-
clude masqueraders in brightly
colored costumes as well as is-
land food and music. He said,
“We are excited to welcome
Wukkout! to our Caribbean
Carnival in the Rockaways pre-
view event. Wukkout! is a high
energy, soca based dance fit-
ness class designed to make
you have fun and sweat just
like you would if you were at
Carnival!”
It will take place at 3 p.m. on
Saturday, June 29, at the Beach
20th Street Pedestrian Plaza
between Mott and Cornaga Av-
enues in Far Rockaway.
The Carnival celebrates the
various arts and culture of
the Caribbean. According to a
Sander’s press release, the car-
nival “has been such a success
for the last two years that or-
ganizers expect an even better
turn out this time around.”
The Caribbean Carnival in
the Rockaways main event will
take place at 11 a.m. on Au-
gust 25, starting at Beach 20th
Street and Seagirt Boulevard
and ending at Bayswater Park,
located at 710 Bay 32nd Street.
Senator Sanders invites all to
come out and celebrate.
