Evaluation of Performance on Diesel Engine

Title of the Project:-
Fuelled with Biodiesel extracted from Soybean.

Background of the Project:- Soy Biodiesel is a clean-burning, non-toxic

renewable fuel made from Soybean oil. It is one of the major feedstocks for
Biodiesel production.
Objectives of the Project:-
 To reduce Greenhouse Gases & Particulate Emissions.
 To increase the life of the Engine & Components.
 To get more efficiency than the Petro-Diesel engines.
 Ignition delay is less when compared to Petro-Diesel engines.
Methodology of the Project:-
 Transesterification is a common method for biodiesel production from
soybeans and usually preferred instead of direct esterification.
 In transesterification, Soybean oil react with alcohol in presence of a
catalyst to form alky esters and glycerol. This process reduce the viscosity of
oils which is higher than petro-diesel.
 Selecting a suitable alcohol and catalyst is important for transesterification
method. Various alcohols such as methanol, butanol, ethanol, propanol and
amyl alcohol can be used for transesterification. Methanol & Ethanol are
used widely because it is relatively cheaper than other alcohols and has
chemical and physical advantages over other alcohols.
Anticipated Results:- To get more efficiency than Petro-Diesel engines & also to
get to see less harmful emissions.

ABSTRACT:-

There is a need for alternative energy sources to petroleum-based

fuels due to the depletion of the world’s petroleum reserves, global warming and
environmental concerns. Soybean oil is one of the major feedstocks for biodiesel
production.

Transesterification is a common method for biodiesel production. The reaction

begins when an alcohol, such as methanol, is catalyzed, usually by sodium
hydroxide. This mixture is then added to soybean oil, then it is tested with
different blends. The process is relatively simple and does not produce any waste
products. It is important to note that this is a required process in the use of
biodiesel, and raw oils should not be used as substitutes.
