Annyeong…. “Oppa, why you looked so cool!” my sister acclaimed.

Korean drama is played on the

mobile phones again. You will likely to hear that every single night with different songs and
programme from my sister’s room. You do not have to think about it. It just happened to be the best
time in the world, for her at least.

Why does the teenagers crave about this Korean wave? Before I even start to talk about it. Let me
introduce to you The Korean Wave (Hallyu). It is refers to the the popularity of South Korea
entertainment and culture. And one of the popular Korean entertainment is K-pop. K-pop as we
know it can be traced back to the 1990s til now it is still going strong.

K-pop as we know it revolutionalised the world. It brings about and showcasing Korea in the pop
music industry. The Korean government has been very supportive and promoting this as a new
industry to feed the 21st century. Based on this, one of the most successful story of K-pop group is
the BTS.

BTS’s US prominence has expanded rapidly over the past year, when the band seemed to smash one
success metric after another, from spending multiple weeks on US charts to a landmark appearance
at the American Music Awards to collaborating with Steve Aoki for their December 2017 single remix
“Mic Drop.”

BTS is now celebrating a truly unprecedented rise. In May, they became the first South Korean band
in history to debut an album at No. 1 on the US Billboard chart, as well as the first with a single at
No. 10 on the Billboard Hot 100. The band’s world tour promptly sold out. They’ve released two
follow-ups to 2017’s Love Yourself: Her; the first, Love Yourself: Tear, moved 135,000 units in its first
week to land atop the charts, while Love Yourself: Answer featured a huge collaboration with none
other than Nicki Minaj, on a new version of their song “Idol.”

As we have knew, BTS has been also an ambassador for United Nation by giving voice to the youth. It
is to encourage the youngster of today to find their voice.

What was significant in the speech RM got personal by touching on his journey to self-actualization
in the face of struggles. “I tried to jam myself into the other molds that other people made,” he said.
“Soon, I began to shut out my own voice and listen to the voice of others. No one called out my
name and neither did I. My heart stopped and my eyes closed shut. Like this, I—we—all lost our
names. We became like ghosts. But I had one sanctuary, and that was music.”

Fans were deeply moved by the band’s UN speech, which touched on what are by now familiar
themes for the band: struggles with self-worth, self-doubt, and mental health in a high-pressure
environment for teens. The appearance marked the first time a K-pop band had ever spoken at the
UN, and sparked a wave of trending hashtags throughout their subsequent follow-up appearances,
including the #1 global trend on Twitter.
Thus, k-pop isn’t all about showing the artistic side of things and entertainment. It is a form of
teaching others values. The value of loving oneself and respecting each other. It shows far more than
the combination of cheeky, colorful concept, clever choreography, cute guys and of course girls, and
catchy songwriting. It is more than this. It has a widespread phenomenon that could not be stopped.

So when the next time you heard your sister playing the latest songs from the favourite singer. Don’t
hesitate to stop them but let yourself immerse into the music. Thankyou.
