Disinfection of Filter Media

1. Purpose
The purpose of this activity is to disinfect the filter media. Before they are placed back into service after
improvement works. This is to make sure that bacteria and other potential pathogens are inactivated.

2. Required Materials and Equipment

a. 100 L of Sodium Hypochlorite, 8%
b. Residual Chlorine meter
c. Sampling pump
d. Sampling bucket
e. Rope
f. Sampling bottles
g. PPEs (helmet, face mask, vest, safety shoes, gloves, goggles, harness)

3. Procedure
a. Secure necessary work permits
b. Conduct toolbox meeting to orient involved personnel for the specific activity.
c. Manhole at effluent channel will be opened and submersible pump will be installed to drain water going to
backwash gate. Remove pump and hose after draining.

d. Once the filter is ready. Open Influent gate to 5%. While settled water is flowing, pour the sodium
hypochlorite simultaneously. This is to mix the hypochlorite with settled water.

e. After mixing, maintain a certain level at filter cells preferably at the launders overflow.

f. Gather a sample at each corners of each filter cells and at sampling pipe to check the Residual Chlorine.
Total number of samples is nine. Value should be around 6.25 mg/L (average). Once this is attained, the
chlorinated filter shall be allowed to stand for at least 3 hours. At the end of the contact time, the
chlorinated water shall be tested to determine the amount of residual chlorine. If the residual chlorine is
less than 3.75 mg/L, the disinfection process shall be repeated. The method statement is deviating from
AWWA’s C653-13 Disinfection of Filter Media 4.4.4.1 Disinfection procedure due to safety reasons.

g. During the disinfection process, make sure the personnel working near the filter being disinfected are
wearing face mask

h. Once the disinfection process has complied with the agreed set point. Chlorinated water will be drain and
discharged to lagoon.
