Scope of Works

Scope of Activities

This scope defines the minimum standards to be adopted when installing Electrical Busduct
according to construction co-ordination drawings. Ducting is used to provide mechanical
protection for cable or may have each conductor separated by a grounded barrier from the
adjacent phases (segregated bus). For conducting large currents between devices, a cable
bus is used. For very large currents, where it is difficult to provide circuit protection, an
isolated-phase bus is used. Each phase of the circuit is run in a separate grounded metal
enclosure.

The busduct installation will be both horizontal and vertical.

Site Procedure

Site mobilization shall be done with real time monitoring the conditions & progress of builder
works. Before commencement of the work, carry out examination of the physical condition of
the area. Photographs should be taken where necessary, prior to commencement and
during works.
METHODSTATEMENT

I. Preparation Stage

a. Pre-assembled lengths are shipped to site and assembled in continuous bus runs.

b. Handle the busway with care to avoid damage to internal components and the
enclosure or its finish. Avoid subjecting busway to twisting, denting, impact, and in
general rough handling.

c. Do not use busbar ends for lifting busway sections or fittings.

d. When the busway received, unpack it sufficiently to inspect it for concealed damage
to determine that the shipment is complete and correct.

e. Nail pullers should be used for unpacking wooden crates to avoid damages.

f. Remove any support blocks which may have been used for shipping.

g. If busway is to store in prior to installation, restore packing for protection during that
period at designated storage place with proper placard displaying.

h. Verify that the weight of any busway section or fittings is within the rated capacity of
the handling equipment (Manual hydraulic trolley or fork lift) to be used.

i. Platform pallet provide a simple method of moving busway on floor level if there is a
little or no incline.

j. A fork-lift truck may offer a more convenient method of handling busway and has the
added advantage of permitting it to be hoisted between levels. If fork-lift not
available, a manual fork-lift may used to hoist the busway.

k. Balance the load carefully.

l. Platform lifts or elevators, either manually or power-operated, can be used in moving

loads of busway between elevations.
II. Installation Stage

a. Site survey of the proposed Bus duct installation is based on approved CSD and
isometric views of bus ducts by foreman / sub-contractor together with Engineer.

b. Installation must be carried out based on approved shop drawings & samples by
foreman / sub-contractor.

c. During installation, the busway shall be protected in an approved manner to prevent

the ingress of water.

d. After delivery of bus duct, it is to be Megger before installation at high level.

e. The busway shall be installed along the routes as indicated on the approved working
drawings.

f. All necessary precautions shall be taken to prevent damages to the busway during
installation.

g. Where busway are installed in situations where works by other trades are still
incomplete, all reasonable precautions shall be taken to protect the busway against
damage arising from the execution of such other works.

h. The contact surface of the busbars shall be thoroughly cleaned before jointing. Use
the contact cleaner provided by the vendor.

i. Busway supports shall be provided at 1.5m intervals or as recommended by the

manufacturer. Brackets for supporting vertical runs of busbar Trunking shall be those
supplied by the manufacturer of the busbar trunking.

j. Vertically installed busway shall be supported at each floor by a spring support

system which shall be capable of supporting the full weight of the busway beneath
and shall make allowance for thermal expansion. Where floor to floor distance
exceeds 5 meter, intermediate spring supports shall be provided.

k. Suitable water sheds shall be installed where the busway are installed under the
structural joints to guard against possible leakage of water through the joints.

l. The manufacturer’s recommended tools shall be used throughout the installation of

the busway.

m. Seal all floor and wall openings where the busway pass through with approved fire-
resistant material to maintain the same fire rating as the floors and wall penetrated.

n. The opening of the bus duct riser must be plumbed to ensure verticality.

o. Brackets for holding the bus bar must be tailor made to suite the condition. The
brackets shall be sent for hot galvanization before installation.

p. Manufacturer recommends C-channel with threaded rod to support busway in

horizontal and spring hanger in vertical installation. Please refer to the attached
diagrams showing for vertical installation.

q. A chain block or A- frame is used to lift the bus duct to required position for
installation.

r. Ensure proper alignment for the vertical and horizontal sections of the bus bars
within the bus duct enclosure.
s. Align bus assemblies run vertically and horizontally to eliminate sags and twists.

t. Use joint pullers, if necessary.

u. Ensure proper support for the vertical sections of the bus bars within the bus duct
enclosure.

v. Ensure the bolt-hole sizes, bolt-hole relative locations, and bolt-hole diameters match
at each end of each factory-assembled braid.

w. The above activity should be done earlier of the procedure & coordinated with
transformer supplier.

x. All plug-in openings that are not in use should be covered when such covers are
provided.

y. Bus duct shall be mounted properly by fixed brackets.

z. Tighten bus assembly joints with torque wrench or similar tool recommended by bus
assembly manufacturer. Tighten joints again after bus assemblies have been
energised for 30 days.
aa. Connect bus assemblies and component to wiring system and to ground as
indicated in shop drawings.
bb. Tighten all connectors and terminals according to manufacturer’s recommended
torque tightening values.
cc. Every full section of bus duct is completed it should be Megger/insulation
resistance tested.
dd. Busway should be protected from liquids, moisture, and other contaminates to
prevent Electrical failure.
ee. The nominated sub-contractor shall arrange the busway manufacturer to provide
site supervision and to attend site acceptance test upon completion of
installation.

ff. After installation of Busduct, Engineer-in-charge shall check the complete works
and complete the Inspection checklist for Electrical Busduct installation works. (
See Annex. 1 )

gg. Engineer-in-charge shall arrange and request for inspection with the Owner’s
representative Residential Technical Officer (RTO) using approved Main con
Request for Inspection (RIN) form.
III. Testing & Commissioning

a. In addition to the test required by the Project Manager and those recommended by
the manufacturer, the following tests shall be carried out.

b. Current Carrying and Earthing Connection: All primary conductors used for earthing
system shall be tested to ensure full clamping pressure is applied to all contact
surfaces and that all bolted connections are tightly secured with lock washers.

c. Mechanical Operation Test: All plug-in MCCB shall be subjected to the mechanical
operation test.

d. Interlock test: The correct operation of all the interlocks system be checked.

e. Contact Resistance Test: The contact resistance of each conductor shall be

measured with 100Amps DC and the result shall be compared with designed or
factory result to ensure correct methods of installation have been adopted.

f. Conduct an insulation resistance test on each busway device with insulation

resistance tester rated 1000Volts to ensure that the system is free from short circuits
and grounds (Phase to ground, phase to neutral and phase to phase). It should be
noted that readings vary inversely with the length of run and width or number of bars
per phase. Reading will vary with humidity.

g. Recheck all joint connections for tightness. Follow the manufacturer torquing
recommendations.

h. Ensure that all tap-off or plug-in devices are in “OFF” position.

i. Isolate the busway run by disconnecting all connections to transformers,

switchboards, meters and so forth.

j. Verify the system phasing matches the busway phasing before reconnecting all
connection to transformers, switchboards, meters and so forth.
k. When the equipment is energized for the first time, qualified Electrical personnel
should be present.

l. There should be no electrical load on the busway when it is energised. Since busway
typically extends through several rooms and floor levels, care should be taken to see
that all devices fed from the busway are in “OFF” position.

m. The equipment should be energised in sequence by starting at the source end of the
system and working toward the load end. In other words, energize the main devices,
then the feeder devices and then the branch-circuits devices. Turn “ON” position with
firm positive motion.

n. After all over-current devices have been turned on loads such as lighting circuits,
contactors, heaters and motors may be turned “ON”.

o. Busway, when operating properly, will have a moderate hum noise. Excessive noise
may be indication of hardware has not been tightened or of metal parts have been
improperly assembled.
p. Occurrence of sparking at any point along the busway is not a normal condition. The
busway must be de-energized immediately, and remain de-energized until the
sparking condition has been corrected.

q. Perform an infra-red temperature scan on all electrical connection and busway

enclosure while busway energized and operating under maximum load conditions. A
permanent record should be kept. If the reading changes with time, deterioration is
taking place and must be corrected.
