THEORY :

1. Field Exploration, Sampler, sample disturbance, standard penetration test, plate


load test, pile load test.

2. Earth pressure, active and passive earth pressure conditions. Earth pressure
theories, retaining walls. Bracing in open cuts, sheet piling and anchor bulkheads.

3. Stability of Slopes, factor of safety, slice method, friction circle method and
other methods of analysis, various stability conditions in an earth dam and canals.

4. Bearing capacity of soil, Terzaghi�s theory, factors affecting bearing capacity,


settlement-consideration and computation. Effect of water-table. Individual &
combined footing, Rafts.

5. Pile foundations, point bearing and friction piles, bearing capacity of single
pile in clay and sand.

6. Geotechnical aspects of well and pier foundations. Design principles of Machine


foundations.

Rimpull, acceleration, cycle time, swell and shringkage of soils.

4. Tractors and related equipments : Tractors � types, performance gradability,


Bulldozers-types and output tractor shovels rippers, land cleaning equipment
scrapers; types and output Drag line, clam shells, hoes, trenching machines.

5. Other construction equipments : Power shovels � types and size, selection,


optimum depth of cut, output. Tracks and wagons, types and capacities, Balancing
capacities of excavators. Compacting equipment; Rollers, their suitability for
different operations. Belt conveyers component and power required.

design problem deflection and crack-width calculations.
