Introduction

Mean, median, and mode are three kinds of "averages".

There are many "averages" in statistics, but these are the three most common, and
are certainly the three you are most likely to encounter in your pre-statistics
courses, if the topic comes up at all.

Among a list of values, "mode" is the value that occurs most often. If no number in
the list is repeated, then there is no mode for the list.

eg: find the mode of mode for the following list of values:

13, 18, 13, 14, 13, 16, 14, 21, 13

Time/min The mode is the number that is repeated more often than any other, so 13 is the
20 mins mode.
for contionous data, we have to find the modal group (the group with highest
frequency), and to apply equation

 L is the lower-class boundary of the modal group

 fm-1 is the frequency of the group before the modal group
 fm is the frequency of the modal group
Faculty of Science and Technology - Daily Lesson Plan- 2019 1 of 3
 fm+1 is the frequency of the group after the modal group
 w is the group width

Body
Time/min
Exercise: find mode of the given data:

a. here the modal group is 61-65 (group with highest

frequency)
L = 61, 𝑓𝑚 = 8,
𝑓𝑚−1 = 7,
25 mins
w=4

8−7
Estimated Mode = 60.5 + ×5
(8 − 7) + (8 − 4)
= 60.5 + (1/5) × 5
= 61.5

Example 2: The ages of the 112 people who live on a tropical island are grouped
as follows

Calculate the mean, median and mode of the data given

Evaluation
Time/min
 Oral questions and class exercise.
10 mins
