MEDIA STATEMENT

RE: STATUS OF HEALTHCARE SERVICES IN KIRINYAGA


COUNTY

The County Executive Committee held a cabinet meeting on 26 th


of June 2019, chaired by the Governor, H.E. Anne Waiguru.
Among the issued discussed was an update by the department of
health on the status of the hospitals in the county.

The following is a summary of that report;

A. Number of health workers in the County

A total of 251 medical officers did not go on strike and have
continued to offer services to the residents of Kirinyaga.

In addition, the county temporarily engaged 98 more medical


officers as a stop gap measure to offer the most critical
services across all sub-county hospitals in the county.

B. Number of patients served in the sub-county hospitals

It was reported that all sub-county hospitals in the county are


operational and are continuing to offer services to patients. In the
past two weeks, Kerugoya County Referral Hospital had served
4666 patients, Kimbimbi Hospital 3075 patients, while Kianyaga
and Sagana Hospitals had served 1592 and 1346 patients
respectively.

This means a total of 10,679 patients have been served at the


county health facilities in the last two weeks. A summary of the
above is shown in the table extract here below:

C. Status of Strike

It was also reported that inspite of the court order issued on the
24th of May terming the health workers strike illegal, some of the
workers continued to participate in the strike.

D. Conclusion (Cabinet Resolutions)

Based on the foregoing, the cabinet resolved to take the following


actions in a bid to ensure health services continue with no
disruption to residents:

 To withhold the June salaries of all those health workers


participating in the strike action by failing to report to work

 To terminate the services of all medical workers


participating in the on-going, illegal and unprotected strike

 To retain the 98 health workers engaged in the month of


June on contract basis to support the 251 medical
personnel who did not go on strike.

 To hire additional health workers as replacements for all


those on strike, should they continue with the illegal strike.
