The Story of Thumbelina


Once upon time, there was a very poor woman. There was not a boy or a daughter who lived
with her. She wished very much to have a child.
One day, the poor woman went to a fairy god mother. The fairy lived near the green meadow
in the valley. The poor woman received a barleycorn seed from the fairy. She went home and
planted it in a flower pot. Several days latter, the seed grew up into a large beautiful flower.
Surprisingly, the woman saw a little girl inside the flower. The sweet little girl was as long as
a thumb.The woman gave her the name of Thumbelina because she was so small.

The story of a Mouse and a Frog


Once, there was a mouse which made of close friendship with a frog.
One day, the frog said to the mouse; “Let’s bind ourselves together with a string so that we
may never get separated”. The mouse agreed. Both tied themselves together leg to leg. It
went quite well on land. When they came to a small pool, it was a tragic for the mouse.
In the end, the frog kept swimming across the small pool dragging the mouse with him. Soon,
the mouse drowned and floated on the surface of the pool.

The Story of Hare and Tortoise


There was once an arrogant hare who wanted to prove that he was better than everybody
else, so he chose the slowest animal in the county, the tortoise, and invited him to a five
mile race.
The tortoise accepted his challenge and trained hard for the event, while the hare walked
around boasting that he was going to humiliate the tortoise and make him look stupid.
The day of the race dawned. The tortoise set off at a slow and steady pace, while the hare
was dancing around laughing at him; other animals were laughing too, including the rabbit,
the badger, and even the little hedgehog.
The hare became exhausted from all his dancing around, so he decided to have a nap. When
he awoke, he realised that a few hours had passed and the tortoise was nowhere to be
seen. The hare panicked and ran the whole course as fast as he could, which was very fast
indeed.
As he reached the top of the final hill, he could see the finish line in the distance, with the
tortoise walking slowly across it, the victor.

Snow White

Once upon a time there lived a little, named Snow White. She lived with her aunt and uncle
because her parents were died.
One day she heard her aunt and uncle talking about leaving Snow White in the castle
because they wanted to go to America and they didn’t have enough money to take Snow
White with them.
Snow White didn’t want her uncle and aunt to do this. So she decided to run away. The next
morning she run away from home when her aunt and uncle were having breakfast, she run
away into the wood.
In the wood she felt very tired and hungry. Then she saw this cottage. She knocked but no
one answered so she went inside and felt asleep
Meanwhile seven dwarfs were coming home from work. They went inside. There, they
found Snow White woke up. She saw the dwarfs. The dwarfs said; “What is your name?”.
Snow White said; “My name is Snow White”. One of the dwarfs said; “If you wish, you may
live here with us”. Snow White told the whole story about her. Then Snow white ad the
seven dwarfs lived happily ever after.

The Story of Toba Lake


Once upon a time, there was a man who was living in north Sumatra. He lived in a simple hut
in a farming field. The did some gardening and fishing for his daily life.

One day, while the man was do fishing, he caught a big golden fish in his trap. It was the
biggest catch which he ever had in his life. Surprisingly, this fish turned into a beautiful
princess. He felt in love with her and proposed her to be his wife. She said; “Yes, but you
have to promise not to tell anyone about the secret that I was once a fish, otherwise there will
be a huge disaster”. The man made the deal and they got married, lived happily and had a
daughter.

Few years later, this daughter would help bringing lunch to her father out in the fields. One
day, his daughter was so hungry and she ate his father’s lunch. Unfortunately, he found out
and got furious, and shouted; “You damned daughter of a fish”. The daughter ran home and
asked her mother. The mother started crying, felt sad that her husband had broke his promise.

Then she told her daughter to run up the hills because a huge disaster was about to come.
When her daughter left, she prayed. Soon there was a big earthquake followed by non-stop
pouring rain. The whole area got flooded and became Toba Lake. She turned into a fish again
and the man became the island of Samosir.

Queen of Arabia and Three Sheiks


Maura, who like to be thought of as the most beautiful and powerful queen of Arabia, had
many suitors. One by one she discarded them, until her list was reduced to just three sheiks.
The three sheiks were all equally young and handsome. They were also rich and strong. It
was very hard to decide who would be the best of them.

One evening, Maura disguised herself and went to the camp of the three sheiks. As they were
about to have dinner, Maura asked them for something to eat. The first gave her some left
over food. The second Sheik gave her some unappetizing camel’s tail. The third sheik, who
was called Hakim, offered her some of the most tender and tasty meat. After dinner, the
disguised queen left the sheik’s camp.

The following day, the queen invited the three sheiks to dinner at her palace. She ordered her
servant to give each one exactly what they had given her the evening before. Hakim, who
received a plate of delicious meat, refused to eat it if the other two sheiks could not share it
with him.

This Sheik Hakim’s act finally convinced Queen Maura that he was the man for her.
“Without question, Hakim is the most generous of you” she announced her choice to the
sheiks. “So it is Hakim I will marry”.

Story of Rabbit and Bear


Once upon a time, there lived as neighbours, a bear and a rabbit. The rabbit is a good shot. In
contrary, the bear is always clumsy ad could not use the arrow to good advantage.

One day, the bear called over the rabbit and asked the rabbit to take his bow and arrows and
came with bear to the other side of the hill. The rabbit was fearing to arouse the bear’s anger
so he could not refuse it. He consented and went with the bear and shot enough buffalo to
satisfy the hungry family. Indeed he shot and killed so many that there was lots of meat left
after the bear and his family had loaded themselves and packed all they could carry home.

The bear was very gluttonous and did not want the rabbit to get any of the meat. Th e rabbit
could not even taste the blood from the butchering as the bear would throw earth on the blood
and dry it up. The poor rabbit would have to go home hungry after his hard day’s work.

The bear was the father of five children. The youngest child was very kind to the rabbit. He
was very hearty eater. The mother bear always gave him an extra large piece of meat but the
youngest child did not eat it. He would take it outside with him and pretended to play ball
with the meat. He kicked toward the rabbit’s house and when he got close to the door he
would give the meat with such a great kick. The meat would fly into the rabbit’s house. In
this way, the poor rabbit would get his meal unknown to the papa bear.

Tangkuban Parahu
Long time ago in West Java, there lived a woman named Dayang Sumbi. She was thirsting
for a husband. Along her life she kept praying and praying. At last, God heard her pray. A
male dog picked her up and Dayang Sumbi got married to the dog and called the dog
‘Tumang’. After years, Dayang Sumbi gave a birth to baby and named him Sangkuriang.
Unfortunately, Dayang Sumbi never told Sangkuriang who his father was.
One day, Sangkuriang was hunting with Tumang in the forest and he found nothing except a
little animal. He blamed Tumang for the failure and then he killed Tumang. When Dayang
Sumbi knew that she hit Sangkuriang’s head with a big spoon and expelled him.
Many years later, Sangkuriang wandered and found an old house in the forest. Sangkuriang
came closer to the house and there was an old beautiful woman. The woman, Dayang Sumbi,
recognized the wanderer as Sangkuriang.
Unintentionally, Sangkuriang forced Dayang Sumbi to marry him. Dayang Sumbi agreed to
marry him but Sangkuriang had to build a vast boat, just in one night.
At night, Sangkuriang called his friends, ghosts and fairies to help him. Feared with the boat
to complete, Dayang Sumbi asked other women in her village to help her. Then the women
punched the grains with grain puncher to make noise which disturbed the ghosts and fairies.
The morning came before Sangkuriang completed the boat. Unfortunately the fairies and the
ghosts also left Sangkuriang alone. Finaly Sangkuriang got very angry and kicked away the
boat to the downside, which finally turned into a mountain, called Tangkuban Parahu.
The Thirsty Crow
One hot day, a crow was very thirsty and wanted a drink of water. It was along way to the
river and she was too tired to fly there for a drink. She could not see a pool of water
anywhere. She flew round and around. At least she saw a big jug outside the house. The
Crow flew down to the jug. She locked inside. Thre was a little water at the bottom of the jug.
The Crow flew down to the jug, but she could not reach the water with her beak. She climbed
onto the jug. She almost fell into it, but she could not put her beak into the water.

The Crow flew into the air, then she flew down at the jug and tired to break it with her beak.
But the jug was strong. It would not break. The Crow flew at the jug, flapping her wings. She
tried to knock it over, so that the water would run out onto the ground. But the jug was too
heavy. It did not fall over. The Crow was too tired to fly anymore. She thought she would die
thirst.The Crow sat down to rest. She thought and she thought. She did not want to die of
thirst.

She saw some small stones lying on the ground. She had an idea. She picked up a stone in her
beak and dropped it into the jug. Then another, and another. The water rose higher every time
a stone fell into the jug. Since the jug was nearly full of stones. The water came to the top.
The clever crow put her beak into it at last, and had a drink. Where there’s will, there’s away.

The Fox and The Grapes


One afternoon there was a fox that was walking through the forest and spotted a bunch of
grapes hanging from over a lofty branch. “Just the thing to quench my thirst,” quoted the fox.
Taking a few steps backward, the fox jumped but unfortunately he missed the hanging
grapes. Again the fox took a few paces backward, ran, and tried to reach them but he still
failed.

Finally, giving up, the fox turned up his nose and said, “They’re probably sour anyway,” and
proceeded to walk away.
