UNIT II: Environmental Awareness, Environmental Education in the School Curriculum

OBJECTIVES:

At the end of this chapter we are expected to:

Recognize what are environmental education, environmental awareness and

conservation education.
Know how to conserve of environmental education and awareness in school.
Understand public role towards environment.
Identify/ Integrate EE in school curriculum
Raise awareness to role learners

INTRODUCTION

Environmental education is teaching of individuals, communities, in transitioning to a

society that is knowledge of the environment and its associated problems, aware the solution
to these problems, and motivated to solve them.

The focus of this topic are the conservation education in school, communicating with
schools, academic standards and environmental education and integrating environmental
education into school curriculum.

DEFFINITION OF TERMS

Environment
The surroundings or conditions in which a person, animal or plant lives or operates
Education
The process of receiving or giving systematic instruction, especially at a school or
university
Awareness
Knowledge or perception of a situation or fact

DISCUSSION

Environmental Education
Refers to organized efforts to teach how natural environments function, and
particularly, how human being manage behavior and ecosystem to live sustainability.
It is also to increase the public awareness and knowledge of environmental issues.
It is a multi-disciplinary field integrating disciplines such as biology, chemistry, physics, ecology,
earth science

Environmental Awareness
The fragility of our environment and the importance of its protection.
An integral part of the movement's sucess by teaching our friends and family that the physical
environment is indispensable, we can begin fixing the problems that threaten it.

Conservation Education in School

Dealt with the natural world in a drastically different ways of nature study. It focuses on
rigorous scientific trainings rather nature study. Scientific management and planning tool that
help solve social, economic and environmental problems.

How to conserve environmental education and awareness in school?

Using texbooks such as biology, chemistry, physics, ecology, earth science. Field trips at
marine sunctuaries, zoos, farms, eco parks and more.Conduct school activities like: field trips,
tree planting, ceanup drive.

SCHOOL ACTIVITIES
 Tree Planting

COMMUNICATING WITH SCHOOLS

 Conduct symposuim or meeting with the stakeholders and parents.
 Advice pupils, parents and stakeholders to attend school activities that promotes
environmental awareness.
 Using modern technology to promote programs and activities.

 Inform public in their various roles as consumer, employee, voters and business and
community leaders because solving local and global problem cannot be accomplished
by the politician or experts alone.

Integrating Environmental Education

Using the local environment as a framework for teaching state and district education
standards.
Environmental education policies allot the financial for hands - on outdoor learning.

Modes of Integration
 Environmental Education in existing subject areas
 Environmental Education as a separate subject
 Environmental Sciences and/or Resource Management as a Discipline

Environmental Education in existing subject areas

Discipline-Based Approach
The list of competencies already include those relevant to environmental protection and
improvement
These competencies are to enriched and/or modified, depending on the need of the
students, the demands of the community, the resources available and nature of the learning
environment
Application-Based, Issues-Based Approach
Environmental problems and issues are analyzed and alternative solutions are tested
Provides an opportunity for learners to draw from different disciples and skills

Environmental Education as a separate subject

Offerring EE or an environmental related course as an elective or as a required course,

especially in the tertiary level

 Environmental Education course as an elective

 Environmental Education courses for the general student
 Environmental Education courses for specific professions

Environmental Sciences and/or Resource Management as a Discipline

Many colleges and universities offer undergraduate and graduate specifications in
 Environmental Science
 Environmental Engineering
 Environmental Sanitation
 Environmental and Resource Management
 Environmental Chemistry, Ecology and many others

Importance of EE to achieve successful integration

BASIC EDUCATION
 Learning in the process areas of the curriculum must be given a real purpose
 Teacher must develop a set of understanding about the topic that are relevant and
challenging
 Learners must to some extent, participate in setting the direction of the unit
 Activities must be interactive and learners must be involved
 Learners must apply what they have learned in real situation
COMMUNICATION ARTS
 Reading skills can be developed using environment related instructional materials like
newspaper clippings and articles
 Oral skill can be developed through interpretative reading of poems and other literary
pieces with environmental messages
 Storytelling can be used to improve communication by discussing local issues
Mathematics
 Computation of electricity and water bills can be used to emphasize the need to
conserve energy and water
 Computation of forest cover and land areas, population, density, rate of increase and
decrease of population
 Ratios showing relationship of population to resources, trees to human population, rice
production to consumption, etc. can be computed
Arts, Crafts and Related Course
 A painted mural of a beautiful panorama on a school fence can be a starter for instilling
the significance of maintaining balance of nature
 The use of scrap materials for projects can highlight the concepts of conservation and
waste reduction
Science, Social Studies and Civics
 Natural Science can give scientific explanations for phenomenal occurrences
 Social Sciences can easily relate the environmental issues and concerns to the life of
learners, and the consequences of environment neglect and degradation
Whole School Responsibilities
It is mandatory for Schools to ensure that EE is incorporated into the whole school
curriculum.
Schools are required to:
 Integrate the aims and objectives of EE within existing teaching/learning programs
 Adopt teaching/learning strategies for EE as a regular part of classroom
teaching/learning
 Ensure that there is a consistency between the guiding principles of EE and the
schools implementation of EE through its total curriculum and
 Assess and evaluate EE

In implementing the curriculum, school should consider:

 Introducing environmental themes into existing programs or introducing additional
environmental school based courses (for secondary and tertiary)
 Providing opportunities for the training of staff on strategies to effectively
implement the curriculum
 Introducing activities based on specific environmental themes

Role of Teachers and Educators in EE

The teacher plays a significant and substantial part in EE by being a role model to
students in ensuring acceptable environmental standards.
 Develop in learners an understanding of the relationship between local and global
environmental issues
 Select learning activities that will encourage responsible action and develop desirable
values that will help improve the quality of the environment
 Plan and organize activities to develop among learners or target group problem solving
 Helps students identify environmental problems that are relevant to their lives and are
solvable by them.
 Keep updated on the special dates and thrusts at the local and global levels and organize
activities to drum up such celebrations and the World Earth Day of National
Environment Day

Role of Learners in EE
Students can and/or should:
 Find solution to environment problems
 Collect various information about the environment as a discussion and information
dissemination
 Took advantage the use of Social Media to spread environmental awareness
 Campaign for environmental protection and conservation through recycling activities,
etc
 Initiate projects for environmental protection and conservation in school and/or
community levels

SUMMARY

Environmental education teach us about how environment function, how to manage

and to be aware what are happening today.
In environmental awareness that we must be carefull and love our environment a such
it is fragile that we cannot return to its original structure but we can fix the problem that
threaten it.
The role of educators is to continue teaching that governs in environmental education.
