A MESSAGE FOR OUR CHILDREN

FIRST READING: 2 Kings 2:1-2, 6-14

Elijah’s ministry is finished as he is taken up into heaven, and a new

chapter begins as Elisha inherits the mantle and the spirit of his teacher.
Like the great prophet Moses before them, both Elijah and Elisha part a
body of water through the power of the Lord.
1
Now when the LORD was about to take Elijah up to heaven by a
whirlwind, Elijah and Elisha were on their way from Gilgal. 2Elijah said to
Elisha, “Stay here; for the LORD has sent me as far as Bethel.” But Elisha
said, “As the LORD lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you.” So
they went down to Bethel.
6
Then Elijah said to him, “Stay here; for the LORD has sent me to the
Jordan.” But he said, “As the LORD lives, and as you yourself live, I will
not leave you.” So the two of them went on. 7Fifty men of the company of
prophets also went, and stood at some distance from them, as they both
were standing by the Jordan. 8Then Elijah took his mantle and rolled it up,
and struck the water; the water was parted to the one side and to the other,
until the two of them crossed on dry ground.
9
When they had crossed, Elijah said to Elisha, “Tell me what I may do
for you, before I am taken from you.” Elisha said, “Please let me inherit a
double share of your spirit.” 10He responded, “You have asked a hard thing;
yet, if you see me as I am being taken from you, it will be granted you; if
not, it will not.” 11As they continued walking and talking, a chariot of fire
and horses of fire separated the two of them, and Elijah ascended in a
whirlwind into heaven. 12Elisha kept watching and crying out, “Father,
father! The chariots of Israel and its horsemen!” But when he could no the very | depths were shaken.

of healing. Each person may come to receive a word of blessing and prayer
for healing and forgiveness, along with laying on of hands and an
anointing. These signs, first given in baptism, tell us again that we are
sealed by the Holy Spirit and marked forever with the cross of Christ, who
is health and salvation for the world.

In its ministry of healing, the church does not replace the gifts of God that
come through the scientific community nor does it promise a cure. Rather
the church offers and celebrates gifts such as these: God’s presence with
strength and comfort in time of suffering, God’s promise of wholeness and
peace and God’s love embodied in the community of faith.”

Brothers and sisters, James writes: “Is any one of you sick? Let him call the
elders of the church to prayer over him and anoint him with oil in the name
of the Lord. And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person
well; the Lord will raise him up.”

I invite you to come forward for anointing and prayer in the name of the
