Lesson Plan
Name of lesson: Magical Months

Grade level: First grade

Suggested group size: Whole group

Subject: Math

Standard: Measurement. Recite the months of year in order. (1) 3.9

Objective: The students will be able show they have learned the months of the year in order by
completing a matching worksheet where they will be able to match the months with the correct
corresponding numbers.

Materials: Calendar, children’s book titled Once Around the Sun by author Bobbi Katz,
matching months to corresponding number worksheet, pencils

Procedures: When the math lesson begins, the students will take a seat in the reading corner of
the room. I will grab the children’s book titled Once Around the Sun by author Bobbi Katz and
read it in its entirety to the students. After we complete the book, we will grab the calendar and
read the months out loud together. Following this, I will teach the students the “Months of the
Year” song. After we sing the song 3 times in a row, the students will return to their assigned
seat. From there, we will start a share pair activity where I will ask the students which month of
the year comes first, after they say “January!” I will ask each student who celebrates their
birthday that month to stand up. After, the students will be asked to turn to the person next to
them and discuss which month comes next. When the students respond with “February!” I will
have the students who celebrate their birthday in February stand up. This activity will continue
until they reach the final month, December. Each student should feel excited and special when
standing for their birth month, do a light drumroll with the class before the students stand to
make the activity more exciting for them. After the students complete this activity, they will
begin their assessment worksheet. This worksheet has the months of the year listed out of order,
with numbers 1-12 out of order on the opposite side, the students need to match the month of the
year with the corresponding number. While they are working on this project, they are not to help
one another. I want each student to work individually on this assignment to ensure that every
student understands the correct order of the months of the year. Simply tell them to do their best.

Assessment: The assessment will be an embedded assessment; the students will be required to
complete a worksheet that has the months of the year listed (out of order) as well as the numbers
1-12 (out of order) on the opposite side. The students should be able to match the month with the
corresponding number by the end of the lesson.
