International Day of Older Persons - 2010
Celebration
1. Mahbubnagar :
A Program was organized in the district Town
Hall to commemorate the International Day of the Older
Persons. In association with The Dept. for Physically
Challenged and Senior Citizens in collaboration with
IRCS, Legal Cell and CSOs like LIONS Club, ACSOM,
and a few NGOs. The District Collector, MLA and
Secretary Legal Cell were the guests at the event. Dr.T.
Nagender Swamy from ACSOM presented the
statistical status of the ratios of age groups across the
world and the need to be prepared for the future which
would be a population with over 20% older people. He
brought out the highlights of the changed and changing
trends of the family system – “Joint Family to Nuclear
Family to UN-clear Family”.
Essay Writing competition on the topic of
“Responsibility of Youth towards older Persons in the
society”, was conducted for the college students and
prizes were given away. Felicitation of some Senior
freedom fighters, educationist and also a surpanch.
Prize distribution was made to the winners of different
games.

Help Age India of A.P. branch celebrated “
International Day of Older Persons on 8th October 2010
at Necklace Road, Hyderabad. Many senior
organizations from the city and members of the
Federation of A.P. Senior Citizens’ Organisations
(FAPSCO) have participated.
Sri.S.P.Singh, Principal Secretary G.O.A.P. did the
flagging off of the WALKATHON before a well-attended
public meeting, which was Presided the meeting

Dr. Rao V.B.J. Chelikani explained the need for self
sufficiency, dignity and quality of life. Issues on Parents
Maintenance Act, Health Insurance and legal
awareness were explained by many speakers. The
proposed concessions to the senior citizens on RTC
bus travel were mentioned. Smt. Mamtha Bai P.D. of
Aasara unit in GHMC explained about the facilities for
senior citizens and functioning of Day Care Centres
in twin cities. The Call centre telephone number 1253
has been successfully attending to the problems of
seniors. Value education on age care was insisted upon
by Smt Lalitha Krishna, RK Puram Sainik School who
donated a cheque collected by the staff and students.
5. SCF, Gandhi Nagar, Hyderabad.
As usual, SCF Gandhi Nagar and Lions Club
International Dist. 324-C2 and Dist. 324-C6. Have
organised a mega health camp, sports mela, cultural
programme at A.V. College Auditorium, Domalguda,
on 2nd Oct, 2010 which attracted a big response from
the Seniors. The meeting was addressed by eminent
persons including Sri. Jannat Hussain, IAS, Chief
Information Commissioner, Dr.K.S.Ratnakar, Sri
R.N.Mittal, Lion members etc.
6. SCF, MALKAJGIRI, HYDERABAD.
International Elders Day was celebrated on 7-10-
2010 at Vandemataram Patnalayam, Vishnupuri. On
this occasion, Sri. Pappu Satyanarayana , 94 and A.V.
Ramana, 90,Ex-President , Vimala Devi Nagar were
felicitated by the AASARA - GHMC Project Director,
Smt. Mamathabai and Smt. C. Sita and Anandbagh
Senior Citizen Welfare Association Members Sri.
H.Veerabhadra Rao And P.V. Vishnu Murthy. Earlier, a
condolence message was read out and two minutes
silence was observed remembering late Sri. A. Rama
Rao who was to be felicitated on this occasion.
Speaking on this occasion Smt. Mamathabai
stressed the need to utilize the Day Care Centre kits
provided by AASARA to improve their health and keep
fitness for longevity. Sri.G.Krishna Murthy, General
Secretary, Malkajgiri RWA requested the senior citizens
to extend full support to the needy fellow senior citizens.

7. SENIOR CITIZENS FORUM OF VIDYANAGAR, Hyd

Honoring the elders in connection with World
Elders’ Day (1st October, 2010) was on the immediate
agenda of the Forum However it is decided to combine
the Birth day greetings of the members with their birth
dates in October. The function was held in Lalithanagar
Community Hall on 6th October, 2010. Smt
Mamatabai, Director, AASARA has attended as Chief
Guest. Sri P. Kishan Rao, Secretary, welcomed the
guests.
The following members whose age was more than

Smt. Mamatabai thanked the Government of AP
for providing the senior citizens with free transport
on four national holidays and 25% concessions in
APSRTC buses during the weekly holidays and hoped
that the latter would be extended to all the days shortly.
She asserted that women should be more active and
participate in all the activities in the Association matters.
She advised that the Associations should adopt a
nearby slum and take the activities into the ordinary
people. They should be helped in getting ASARA Card
and bring the medical facility to their door step by
conducting medical camps. She assured that ASARA
will stand by the Associations in all such activities.
Smt. G.Vardhini and Sri Ramajogeswara Sastry,
the couple both above the age of 75 years have
provided refreshments to all the participants. The
meeting ended with the vote of thanks by Sri
G.Satyanarayana
In a meeting conducted on 27-10-10, Sri B.
Ramesh, Retired General Manager, Central Bank who
is counselor on ‘Reversible Mortgage Loans’at Helpage
India, dealt the subject in a detialed manner answering
the queries raised by the senior citizens. He assured
help to senior citizens who will be interested to take
the loans under the above scheme. He can be

Smt. Mamatabai who attended as a special guest
explained that AASARA is poised to take up the cause
of senior citizens in any way. She requested the
members to visit old age homes in their areas to raise
 the spirits of the inmates. Smt. C. Sunita, Corporator
Adikmet ward assured to take up any measure to
develop the cause of the citizens in the ward. Sri P.
Kishan Rao, Smt. Rajeswari and Smt. Anuradha, ward
committee members attended the programme.

Sri P. Kishan Rao welcomed the guests. Sri N.L.N
Murthy presided over the meeting. Sri P.S.Bhagavanulu

8. Senior Citizens Association Boudhanagar, Hyd.
Senior Citizens Association Boudha Nagar,
celebrated Elders Day on 1st October 2010 in MPL.
Community Hall. 305 seniors attended the function and
participated in ‘Fast Walking’, memory contest and
throw ball etc.
R.R. Setty, C.M. Ellaiah, Smt D. Saraswathi won
prizes which were distributed at the hands of Smt.A.
Uma Devi, MPL Corporator. She also gave away 35
consolation prizes. HelpAge India and AASARA
(GHMC) extended full support for grand success of
the function.

9. Senior Citizens Forum, Tarnaka
World Elders Day : was celebrated in the Day
Care Centre , Nagarjuna Nagar, Tarnaka. The day
started by paying a visit to the ‘focus Old Age Home’ in
Street No. 8, Tarnaka, behind St. Ann’s School. Fruits
and biscuits were distributed to the inmates duly
interacting with them. Later in the evening a gathering
was held which was largely attended by seniors.
Sri. D.S.N. Murthy, President explained various
aspects of seniors problems and their life style.
Sri. B.Om Prakash, Advisor read out an article on
Senior Citizen comparing old age with the beautiful

Sun set of the Day which can be made enjoyable and
relaxing.The proposal of Sri. T. Kotayya for raising funds
exclusively for old age homes was welcomed by
members and instant collections were made.
Proposed Sports Event for Seniors :

competitions in the month of November in connection
with 3rd Anniversary celebrations of AASARA at Day
Care Centre Nagarjuna Nagar.

4. A SCOTRWA initiative : Community Radio - System
The last meetings of the Community Radio
Committee were held on the 7th and 9th October. The
main topic of these two meetings was the Application
form for the broadcasting license. At the end of these
meetings it was completely filled up and there just will
have to be attached some things like details about the
structure, past achievements and projects of the
organization (SCOTRWA). But when those formalities
have been added the form will be ready to be sent.
After that it will probably take a few months until the
license will be approved.
Furthermore a survey (for the application form) is
required to be conducted among 1000 people in
different areas in the range of the radiobroadcast. The
questionnaire referring to that survey is preset by the
Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and 1500
copies have already been printed.
In a meeting on 12th October the questionnaires have
been distributed among the committee members and
in the following days more questionnaires have been
brought to different Residencies for giving them to the
tenants. The dropbox for the filled up questionnaires is
placed in the SCOTRWA-office in Balaji Residency.
Anyone who is interested in distributing some of the
questionnaires is very welcome to come there and
collect..
The results of that survey do not have to be attached
directly to the form, but can be sent separately later.
But, however, it should be sent as soon as possible.
Furthermore it was decided that in the beginning the
location of the radio will be the SCOTRWA-office in
Balaji Residency.
Moreover, the costs of the equipment (including
installing the tower) will be less than 10 Lakhs and the
yearly expenditure for maintenance will probably be
one Lakh 20 000 Rupies.
Still open is the question about the name of the radio.
The next meeting will be held on 29th October at 7
pm.

Formation of Federation of Senior Citizens
Associations of Uttarakhand. The Helpage India is
working for unifying the Senior Citizens Federations
through out the nation. In this connection a Federation
was formed in Uttarakhand for better advocacy with
the government for the rights and entitlement.
6. Companion Club of India
Companion club of India from Mumbai has
opened a branch at Hyderabad with a purpose to
facilitate companions to widows or widowers. The
inaugural function was held at Press Club, Basheer
Bagh. The largely attended meeting was addressed

7. Finance Minister at the rescue of Seniors
Sri. Pranab Mukarjee, Hon’ble Finance Minister,
Govt. of India, during the year 2009 raised hopes of
middle class people and senior citizens for rationalizing
the direct tax rates, keeping the common man’s welfare
into account.
However, no such concessions were given in the
budget 2010-2011 with regard to direct taxes.
Keeping in view of the interest of middle class and
senior citizens, who have to spend more money on
health, should raise the Income Tax exemption briefly
as follows:
For Ordinary Citizen - 2.00 lakhs
For Women - 2.25 lakhs
For Senior Citizen - 3.00 lakhs
