Figure 8: Setup of a winding resistance test

Use the RWinding test card to measure the resistance of a power transformer’s
winding. To do so, loop the I DC current signal from CPC 100’s 6A DCoutput via
IAC/DC as shown in figure 8 and inject it into the transformer’s winding.
IAC/DC measures the injected current, and V DC input measures the voltage
generated at the transformer’s winding. From these values the winding
resistance is calculated.
Alternatively, inject the current directly from 400A DC output (see figure 9).

It is recommended to perform all winding resistance measurements with the

CP SA1 discharge box connected to the CPC 100’s V DC input sockets to
protect yourself and CPC 100 from high-voltage hazards. The CP SA1
discharge box must be used for measurements using 400A DC output. Before
using CP SA1, you can check its functionality by following the test procedure in
”CP SA1 Discharge Box”. If the discharge box is defective,
contact OMICRON electronics sales office (for ordering information, see
”Ordering Information for CP SA1” on page 16-14). Before disconnecting the
test leads, short-circuit the transformer’s terminals and then remove the wirings
to CPC 100.

and stored in CPC 100’s internal memory. The calculated difference between
the maximum and minimum measured values in % within the last 10 seconds is
displayed.
Furthermore, this test comprises the option to take a temperature compensation
for copper (Cu) into consideration

5.7.1 Tan Delta on High Voltage Bushings

High voltage bushings are essential parts of power transformers, circuit

breakers and of other power apparatus. More than 10% of all transformer
failures are caused by defective bushings. Although the price for a bushing
is low compared to the costs of a complete transformer, a bushing failure can
damage a transformer completely. A regular capacitance and DF measurement

is highly recommended.

5.7.1.1 Ungrounded Specimen Test (UST)

This test measures the insulation between the center conductor and the
capacitance tap, the dissipation factor tap, and/or ungrounded flange of a
bushing. This test may be applied to any bushing in or out of the apparatus that
is either equipped with capacitance or dissipation factor taps, or with the flange
that can be isolated from the grounded tank in which the bushing is installed. The
insulation resistance between the taps or insulated flanges and ground should
be 0.5 M or greater. While in this case anything that is attached to the bushing
would also be energized, only the insulation of the bushing between the center
conductor and the ungrounded tap or flange would be measured. In the case of
bushings equipped with capacitance taps, a supplementary test should always
be made on the insulation between the tap and the flange. Most manufacturers
list the UST dissipation factor and capacitance values on the bushing nameplate.

Figure 12 : UST bushing test (C1)

5.7.1.2 Grounded Specimen Test (GST)

This test measures the quality of the insulation between the current carrying or
center conductor and the mounting flange of a bushing. This test is conducted
on bushings that have been removed from equipment, bushings connected to
de-energized equipment, spare bushings, or bushings that have been isolated
from connected windings and interrupters. The test is performed by energizing
the bushing conductor and grounding the flange.

5.7.1.3 Hot Collar Test

This test measures the condition of a specific small section of bushing insulation
between an area of the upper porcelain rain shed and the current carrying or
center conductor. The test is performed by energizing one or more electrodes
placed around the bushing porcelain with the bushing center conductor
grounded. This test is used to supplement the three previous tests. It is also
used to test bushings in apparatus when the three tests are either inapplicable
or impractical, such as, with SF6 bushings. Perform a hot-collar test at every
third skirt on SF6 bushings. Hot-collar tests are effective in locating cracks in
porcelain, deterioration, or contamination of insulation in the upper section of a
bushing, low compound or liquid level, or voids in compound often before such
defects are noticeable with the previous tests.

6 CHECKS BEFORE INITIAL ENERGIZATION

- removed any entrapped gas from the three phase neutral reactor high points, protection
accessories and cooling devices

- check for leaks

- check the valve positions

- check if the desiccant (silica gel) is blue and check for oil in the breather.

- check the oil levels in the conservator.

- check the bushings :

. oil level.
. spark gap setting where applicable.
. terminals not subject to tension.

- check the assembly, especially the bushing insulators, for cleanliness.

- check the MV connections for conformity.

- check if all electrical protective devices are fonctional.

7 ENERGIZING

- load tap changer or ratio adjuster in the center position

- gradually apply power to the transformer, at no load, if possible in steps corresponding to

1/5 of the rated voltage (if the voltage is not adjustable, the full voltage can be applied)

- allow to operate at no load for some time

- meanwhile, to test the adjuster winding and the load tap changer, perform a tap changing
cycle. Take care not to exceed the mains capacity

CAUTION

At first, when power is applied and after several hours of energizing, a Buchholz relay fault
may occur due to air or gaz entrapped during oil filling. In such a case, bleed this air or gas
from the Buchholz relay and where applicable (for an Atmoseal type conservator), the oil
gas separation compartment. Check if this gas is nonflammable (otherwise, suspect an
internal fault and contact the transformer manufacturer's representative. In such a case, DO
NOT ENERGIZE AGAIN WITHOUT THE MANUFACTURER'S APPROVAL.)

Progressively set the transformer under load. During this switching to the mains, check the
temperature rise with reference to the load and the equipment operation.

SPECIAL SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

During AC generator no-load tests or overvoltage tests, do not apply a voltage 5 % above
the rating nor a frequency 2.5 % lower than the line frequency (VDE 0532/8.24) to a voltage
transformer (to avoid over-saturation).

For generator + transformer blocks, DISCONNECT THE TRANSFORMER from the AC

generator for overvoltage tests.
