The entire product was manufactured by one person or by a very small group of persons. For this reason, the quality of the
product could essentially be controlled by a person who was also the operator, and the volume of production was limited. The
worker felt a sense of accomplishment, which lifted morale and motivated the worker to new heights of excellence. Controlling
the quality of the product was thus embedded in the philosophy of the worker because pride in workmanship was widespread.
A quality circle is typically an informal group of people that consists of operators, supervisors, managers, and so on, who get
together to improve ways to make a product or deliver a service. The use of quality circles was beginning to grow in Japan during
the 1960s. This concept, which is based on the participative style of management, assumes that productivity will improve through
an uplift of morale and motivation, achieved in turn, through consultation and discussion in informal subgroups
“A quality system is the agreed on companywide and plantwide operating work structure, documented in effective, integrated

costs of quality.”

Common causes are inherent to the system and are always present. Special causes are those for which an
identifiable reason can be determined.
Process control deals with identification and elimination of special causes. Quality improvement relates to the detection and
elimination of common causes. Special causes are controllable mainly by the operator, but common causes need the attention of
management. Therefore, quality improvement can take place only through the joint effort of the operator and management, with
the emphasis primarily on the latter. Quality improvement should bethe objective ofallcompaniesandindividuals. It improves
the rate of return or profitability by increased productivity and by cost reduction.

These quality and operations improvement systems all oriented towards process improvement. They have implementation factors
and results in common such as: continuous improvement, customer satisfaction, people and management involvement to mention
a few.
The Plan stage is usually dedicated to the strategies, the definition of the objectives and the design of the organisation, including
in part human resources management.
The Do stage is considered the implementation phase from the voice of the customer capture until the delivery of the
product/service. Ishikawa used to include training and education in the Do stage.
In the Check and Act stages the organisation checks to evaluate how it conforms to the Plan stage and Acts on what has been
learned.
Juran proposed a universal way of thinking about quality, which he called the quality trilogy: quality planning, quality control,
and quality improvement. This concept fits all functions, levels of management, and product lines.
The quality trilogy process starts with quality planning at various levels of the organization, each of which has a distinct goal. After
the planning phase, quality control takes over. Here, the goal is to run the process effectively such that the plans are enacted.
The next phase of the trilogy process is quality improvement, which deals with the continuous improvement of the product and
the process. This phase is also called the quality breakthrough sequence.

Sistema A Sistema B
Unidades producidas 170 000 340 000
Trabajos por garantía (unidades) 1 700 850
Unidades desechadas 3 400 850
Horas de inspección 3 400 1 700
Horas de entrenamiento en calidad 85 85
Actividades:
Ejecución de los trabajos por garantías: $ 204 000
Desechar unidades: $ 153 000
Inspeccionar: $ 76 500
5
