LTE44 benefits

The LTE44:64QAM in UL feature increases the uplink peak rates through the support of 64QAM.

LTE44 functional description

Functional overview
The LTE44: 64QAM in UL feature offers higher peak rates to suitable UEs, which support 64QAM
in the uplink. The set of suitable UEs for 64QAM is specified depending on the 3GPP release.
The UE Category 5 and Category 8 (Cat.5 and Cat.8) support 64QAM for 3GPP Release 11 and
earlier releases. The UE UL Category 5, Category 8, and Category 13 (Cat.5, Cat.8, and Cat.13)
for certain bands support 64QAM starting from 3GPP Release 12. The support of the modulating
and coding schemes (MCS) values, MCS21 to MCS28 (based on 64QAM), enhances the uplink
peak throughput.

The setting of the enable64QAM system information broadcast 2 (SIB2) parameter is

determined depending on the setting of the actModulationSchemeUl parameter. Whenever
the actModulationSchemeUl parameter is set to 64QAM or 64QAMand16QAMHighMCS , the
enable64QAM SIB2 parameter is set to true. The system information modification procedure
takes care of propagating the change of the actModulationSchemeUl parameter setting to
SIB2.

For the UEs that do not support 64QAM modulation scheme, 16QAM is the highest supported
modulation scheme, which allows an MCS of either up to MCS20 or MCS24, depending on the
configuration set ( 64QAM or 64QAMand16QAMHighMCS ). The actModulationSchemeUl
parameter determines the MCS configuration of the UEs that support or do not support 64QAM in
UL.

The UL 64QAM is used either for UE Cat.5 or Cat.8, or if the rf-Parameters-v1250 information
element (IE) is present in the UE capabilities and the ul-64QAM-r12 parameter is set to
supported for the selected band of the PCell (native or mapped band of the PCell).

The activation of the LTE44: 64QAM in UL feature and any of the Coordinated Multi-Point (CoMP)
features is allowed, but the CoMP is not executed when the 64QAM subframes are applied for
physical uplink shared channel (PUSCH) transmissions.

The supported ranges of the MCS are expanded for the fast uplink link adaptation (F-ULA) and
the extended uplink link adaptation (E-ULA).

User scenario
The operator configures the actModulationSchemeUL parameter to activate 64QAM in the
cell. The UE Cat.5 and Cat.8 (from 3GPP earlier releases to Release 11) and the UE UL Cat.5,
Cat.8, and Cat.13 (from 3GPP Release 12) are necessary to get an increased throughput
because they support MCS21 to MCS28 with the 64QAM modulation.

When the LTE44: 64QAM in UL feature is activated, the UE Cat.5 and Cat.8 and the UE UL
Cat.5, Cat.8, or Cat.13 can perceive an increase in uplink throughput as compared to the cell that
the actModulationSchemeUL parameter set to QPSK , 16QAM , or 16QAMHighMCS . On the
other hand, if the radio condition is poor even though this feature is activated, the UEs do not see
any difference because 64QAM is not used.
