Chapter 1 Modbus Communication Fundamentals

TCP/IP Model
Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol is an internet protocol. It has five layers
and is not as strictly defined as the OSI model. Although the concept is different from the
OSI model, the layers are often compared to each other as follows:
Internet Application Layer (includes the OSI Application Layer, Presentation
Layer, and most of the Session Layer)
Internet Transport Layer (part of the OSI Session Layer and OSI Transport Layer)
Other layers may be mapped directly between the two models, although they
may be named differently.

Communication Protocols
The Satcon products communicate over networks using RS485 and TCP/IP protocols.

Modbus RS 485 Protocol

The Modbus 485 protocol uses a “master-slave” technique, in which the master always
initiates transactions, to exchange data and information.

Modbus TCP Protocol

Modbus TCP is an internet protocol. Because TCP is the transport protocol of the internet
and the structure of a Modbus frame matches the structure of a TCP frame, Modbus TCP
can readily be used over the internet. This means that Modbus TCP devices can be
addressed over the internet across the globe.

Message Transactions
Satcon’s PowerGate®, PowerGate® Plus, and Solstice® inverters—as well as other devices
such as weather stations, power meters, and subcombiners— communicate with the user
over a standard Ethernet network port. The network is accessed through a built-in port on
the Satcon Communication Controller Module (CCM) inside the inverter.
The CCM uses industry-standard Modbus protocol. This protocol defines the message
structure that the CCM will recognize and use. It also describes the process that the
communication controller uses to request access to another device, how it will respond to
requests from other devices, and how errors will be detected and reported. Modbus
protocol specifies the format of the layout and contents of message fields used by the
CCM.
The Modbus protocol provides the internal standard that the communication controller
uses for parsing messages. During communications on the Modbus network, the protocol
determines how the controller will know its device address, recognize a message
addressed to it, determine what action needs to be taken, and extract any data or other
information contained in the message. If a reply is required, the controller will construct
the reply message and send it using Modbus protocol.
All transactions use a master-slave technique, in which only one device (the master) can
initiate transactions (called “queries”). The other devices (the slaves) respond by
supplying the requested data to the master, or by taking the action requested in the
query. Refer also to “Query and Response Cycle”.

Chapter 1 Modbus Communication Fundamentals

Transactions on Modbus RS485 Networks

When communicating on Modbus RS485 networks, the CCM acts as the “master.” See
Figure 2.
The Modbus protocol establishes the format for the master’s query by placing into it the
device (or broadcast) address, a function code defining the requested action, any data to
be sent, and an error-checking field. The slave’s response message is also constructed
using Modbus protocol. It contains fields confirming the action taken, any data to be
returned, and an error-checking field. If an error occurred in receipt of the message, or if
the slave is unable to perform the requested action, the slave will construct an error
message and send it as its response.

Transactions on TCP/IP Networks

When communicating on TCP/IP networks, the CCM acts as the “slave,” while an external
server (host processor) acts as the “master.” See Figure 3.
The host processor (master) initiates the transaction and awaits the response from CCM.
When the CCM receives a message from the master, it constructs a slave response and
returns it to the originating master. All messaging occurs over the internet using TCP/IP
protocol.
The host processor can be a Satcon server (such as the Satcon PV View® Plus option), or a
third-party server or application.

Query and Response Cycle

Figure 4 is a simplified diagram of the “query-response” cycle.

Query Cycle
The function code in the query tells the addressed slave what kind of action to perform.
The data bytes contain any additional information that the slave will need to perform the
function. For example, 03 will query the slave to read holding registers and respond with
their contents. The data field must contain the information telling the slave which register
to start at and how many resistors to read. The error check field provides a method for
the slave to validate the integrity of the message contents.

Response Cycle
If the slave makes a normal response, the function code in the response is an echo of the
function code in the query. The data bytes contain the data collected by the slave, such as
register values or status. If an error occurs, the function code is modified to indicate that
the response is an error response and the data bytes contain a code that describes the
error. The error check field allows the master to confirm if the message contents are
valid.

Serial Transmission Modes

Controllers can be setup to communicate on standard Modbus networks using one of two
serial transmission modes: ASCII (American Standard Code for Information Interchange) or
RTU (Remote Terminal Unit).
Satcon PowerGate® PLUS and PowerGate® inverters use only the RTU mode.

RTU Mode
With the RTU mode, each 8-bit byte in a message contains two 4bit hexadecimal
characters. The main advantage of this mode is that its greater character density allows
better data throughput than ASCII for the same baud rate. Each message must be
transmitted in a continuous stream.
The format for each byte in RTU mode is:
Coding System 8-bit binary, hexadecimal 0-9,A-F
Two hexadecimal characters contained in each 8-bit
field of the message.

Bits per Byte 1 start bit

8-data bits, least significant bit sent first
1 bit for even/odd parity, no bit for no parity
1 stop bit if parity is used; 2 bits if no parity

Chapter 1 Modbus Communication Fundamentals

Message Framing
Modbus Message Framing
In RTU mode, messages start with a “silent” interval representing a specific number of
character times. The first field then transmitted is the address field.
The allowable characters transmitted for all fields are hexadecimal 0-9, A-F. Networked
devices monitor the network bus continuously, including during the “silent” intervals.
When the first field (the address field) is received, each device decodes it to find out if it is
the addressed device.
Following the last transmitted character, a similar interval of silent characters marks the
end of the message. A new message can begin after this interval.

Modbus TCP/IP Framing

Modbus TCP/IP protocol embeds a Modbus frame into a TCP frame as shown in Figure 6
(basically puts a TCP “wrapper” around the Modbus frame). This is a connection oriented
transaction, meaning that every query expects a response.

Making RS485 Connections

The RS485 communication link on the Satcon inverters uses a two-wire electrical interface
in accordance with the EIA/TIA-485 standard. This configuration actually uses three wires,
the third wire being a common connection (see Figure 7).

Figure 7 Master-Slave RS485 Connections

A shielded cable must be used for all links between devices with the shield of each
segment being connected to ground at one end only. Which end of the shield is connected
is not critical, so in Figure 7 the shield for both segments from the Master to Device 1 and
from Device 1 to Device 2 could be connected at Device 1 as long as neither of them is
connected at the Master or at Device 2. Alternatively the shield for the segment from the
Master to Device 1 could be connected only at the Master end and the shield for the
segment between Devices 1 and 2 could only be connected at Device 1.

Connecting Devices
Slaves must be connected to a controlling master using a daisy-chain technique (Figure 7 ).
Do not use a star-configuration. Note the following:
PowerGate® Plus and Solstice ® inverter systems: Up to 32 devices can be
connected, including master.
PowerGate® Inverter systems: Up to two inverters can be connected (one at each
end) together with a weather station and/or power meter in between the
inverters, plus a master.

Note on RS485 Pinout Markings

The polarity of the data lines should be verified.
For some devices, the "Data (+)" can be labeled "Data A" and "Data (-)" can be labeled
"Data B" but not all manufacturers follow this convention for A and B. It is better to use
the (+) and (-) labels for polarity.
If a device does not respond, try reversing the lines to see if the device will respond (no
damage will occur).

Chapter 2 Technical References

Line Termination
Termination is used to match the impedance of a node (device) to the impedance of the
transmission line being used. When the impedances are mismatched, the transmitted
signal is not completely absorbed by the load and a portion is reflected back into the
transmission line. The reflections can interfere with the actual signals and generate
communications errors.

Line Termination Resistor Location

Termination resistors are needed at each end of the two ends of the transmission circuit.
Only one node (device) must have a termination resistor. If different devices (inverters,
weather stations, power meters, etc.) are connected on the network, the termination
resistor MUST be located at the last device.

PowerGate® Plus and Solstice® Inverter Systems

The PowerGate® Plus and Solstice® inverters are normally configured without line
termination resistors. However, if line termination is required at this device, this inverter
provides a jumper-selectable 120 ohm option. The jumper is located on the Digital Power
Control Board (DPCB-7) shown in Figure 8.

PowerGate® Inverter Systems

PowerGate® Inverter Systems do not have a jumper-selectable termination resistor
option. The termination resistor (120 ohms) is permanently connected. If your system
includes both PowerGate® and PowerGate® PLUS inverters, do not add termination
resistors to the PowerGate® PLUS inverters and be sure that the last device on the network
is the PowerGate® inverter (because it has a permanently connected termination resistor).

Signal Common and Ground

Transient Energy
Transient energy can be high frequency. At frequencies of this magnitude, it is difficult to
make a low impedance electrical connection between two points due to the inductance of
the path between them. Whether that path is several feet of cable or thousands of feet of
earth between grounding systems, during a transient event there can be hundreds or
thousands of volts potential between different “grounds”. It cannot be assumed that two
points connected by a wire will be at the same voltage potential.
Although RS485 uses 5V differential signaling, a remote node may see the 5V signal
superimposed on a transient of hundreds or thousands of volts with respect to that node’s
local ground. It is more intuitive to refer to what is commonly called “signal ground” as
the “signal common” or as the “signal reference”.

Connections
Large potential differences between grounds may exist and should be considered before
connecting system nodes. The first step towards successful protection is to assure that
each device in the system is referenced to only one ground, eliminating the path through
the device for surge currents searching for a return. There are two approaches to creating
this ground state.
The first approach is to isolate the data ground from the host device ground; this is
typically done with transformers or optical isolators. With an isolated port, the entire
isolated circuitry floats to the level of the transient without disrupting data
communications. As long as the floating level of the circuitry does not exceed the
breakdown rating of the isolators (typically 1000–2500 volts) the port will not be
damaged. This type of protection does not attempt to absorb or shunt excess energy so it
is not sensitive to the length of the transient. Even continuous potential differences will
not harm isolated devices. It is important to note that isolators work on common mode
transients, they cannot protect against large voltage differences between conductors of a
data cable such as those caused by short circuits between data and power circuits.
An alternative approach is to tie each of the grounds on a device together (typically power
ground and data ground) with a low impedance connection. The transient protection
however needs to be able to dissipate the energy in the transient by either absorbing the
energy or providing an alternative shunt path, however this limits the size of the dynamic
transient that can be handled and does not allow a continuous potential difference
between devices, since this can result in large currents.

Chapter 2 Technical References

Conductors and Shield

RS485 needs 3 conductors and a shield.
Two conductors are used to carry the RS485 differential voltage signal.
The 3rd conductor is used to connect the signal common (of each RS485 driver)
to the same reference.
The shield is connected to earth/ground at one end only and provides shielding
against induced noise.
The driver sends data by modulating the differential voltage. The receiver must sense and
decode the differential. There are limits to the voltages the transmitters and receivers can
work with. These limits are specified by the code. They are -7Volts to +12Volts measured
relative to the Common or Reference signal.
If a ground potential exists between two devices of 24 volts, one of the devices will be
operating outside the specified voltage range. While it might be expected that all the
electrical equipment in an installation is ultimately connected to the same ground, in
practice this is rare, especially in cold climates where building architecture and frozen
ground are determining factors. The 3rd conductor is needed to connect the ground (of
each RS485 driver) to the same reference.
If a 485 device is damaged when it was connected to a laptop or computer, the problem
may be that a ground potential exists. It is a good practice to connect a laptop or
computer’s 485 ground conductor before connecting the differential conductors.
Commonly RS485 system configurations are presented in communications diagrams
without a separate common wire.

Chapter 2 Technical References

Guidelines for Wiring RS485 Links

Use a shielded twisted pair (e.g. Belden 9842), grounding the shield at one end
only (see Figure 9). Be sure to use a twisted pair for the (-) and (+) conductors.
Establish point-to-point configurations (daisy chain) for each device on an RS485
bus; connect (+) terminals to (+) terminals, (-) terminals to (-) terminals, and
common terminals to common terminals. See Figure 10.
The signal common line must be connected in the system. This connection is
necessary to keep the common mode voltage at the receiver within the allowed
range of -5V to +12V measured relative to the Common or Reference signal. The
circuit may operate without the common connection, but is relying on the
difference between the signals’ common remaining within the allowed range,
which is generally only true in a laboratory or when there are no large current
flows. Systems without a common connection will have unreliable connections
when operating while inverters are generating power.
You may connect up to 31 devices on a single bus using RS485 without using a
repeater. Before assembling the bus, each device must have a unique address
(unique ID). Satcon configures default settings during manufacture.
Protect cables from sources of noise by separating data cables from power cables
in trenches and cable trays.
Avoid both “Tee” and “Star” connections. Refer to Figure 11 and Figure 12.
No more than two cables should be connected at any one point on the RS485
network, whether the connections are for devices, converters, terminal strips
and so on.
Include all segments when calculating the total cable length. If you are not using
an RS485 repeater, the maximum cable length for all devices is 3281 feet (1000
meters). Running more than 1000 feet (305 meters) of cable is not recommended
unless the wiring is installed and tested by communications specialists.
Connect shield to RS485 Master and individual devices as shown in Figure 10. You
must also connect the shield to earth-ground at one point.
Termination resistors may be needed at both ends for longer length transmission
lines. Termination resistors should be placed only at the extreme ends of the
data line, and no more than two terminations should be placed in any system
that does not use repeaters.

Data Link Layer Implementation (Modbus Protocol)

The Satcon inverter implements a subset of the Modbus protocol as described below.

Transmission Modes
Only RTU (binary) mode is supported. ASCII mode is not supported.

Function Codes
Only two function codes are supported (shown in decimal):
04 Read Input Registers
16 Preset Multiple Registers
For PowerGate® Plus and Solstice® inverters units, if you specify function codes other than
04 and 16, the inverter will produce undefined results. Only use the two function codes
specified here.
For PowerGate® inverter units, if you specify function codes other than 04 and 16, the
inverter will produce an exception response with an error code of 1. Only use the two
function codes specified here.

Register Addresses
PowerGate® Inverter
The valid address range for registers is 30070 to 30175 for function 04, and 40209 to
40213 for function 16.
Not all registers in this range are implemented. If you “read” a register that has not been
implemented, the logic will return undefined data and if you “write” to this type of
register, the logic will return undefined results. Avoid both reads and writes to registers
that have not been implemented.

PowerGate® Plus and Solstice® Inverters

For the PowerGate® Plus and Solstice® inverters, not all registers are implemented and
others are protected. If you “read” a register that has either not been implemented or is
protected, the logic returns a value of zero. If you “write” to these types of registers, the

About the PowerGate® Plus and Solstice® Inverter Registers

®
The PowerGate® Plus and Solstice inverter registers hold parameter data that the
inverter needs in order to operate properly. These registers are divided into the following
three primary groups:
Read only parameters
Read-write parameters
Registers that contain read-only parameters do not require any special access privileges.
Registers that contain read-write parameters can be written to by all users (they do not
require special write permissions).

Special Note about PowerGate® Plus 1MW Inverter Registers

The PowerGate® Plus 1MW inverter consists of two 500kW inverter units in a
Master/Slave configuration. Information from Subunit A (Master) is obtained by querying
Modbus Address 31XXX. Information from Subunit B (Slave) is obtained by querying
Modbus Address 32XXX. The 30XXX register series is a ‘combined’ value of the two
subunits. Where applicable, the register will be a sum, average, or bitwise OR of the
identical two subunit registers.

Summary of PowerGate® Plus and Solstice® Inverter Registers

The following is a summary of the user-accessible registers.

Read/Write Parameters

Read Only Parameters

The read-only parameters can be read by users with any access level (level 0 and above);
they do not require special write privileges. The following descriptions describe the read-
only parameters.

DPCB Software Identification

The Digital Power Control Board (DPCB) uses embedded software—firmware—to control
a number of different functions in the inverter. The software identification number
identifies the version of the DPCB firmware that is installed in a specific inverter unit.

Software Identification Number

Register Number: 30010
HMI Menu: Monitoring/Status/Firmware
Units: None
Minimum/Maximum 0.00/655.35

Description: The numerical part of the Digital Power Control Board

(DPCB) software identification number. Its format is
xxx.yy which corresponds to a software number of SF-
PVxxx-0yy. Note that this is not a normal software
version number indicating major and minor revision, but
is more like a part number.

Example:
An example of how this number is displayed on the inverter HMI is as follows:

HMI SF-PV 005-010

DPCB SF-PV 6-20

Chapter 5 Subcombiner Register Descriptions

Historical Data Collection

The SubCombiner data set contains sensor information that is grouped into three distinct
categories; Historical, Statistical, and Present. This new extension of data logging will
enable the user to gain greater insight into the performance of the system.
There are 5-6 data points of interest available for each sensor in the SubCombiner system.
The data points are instantaneous (Present), the average and max/min peaks during a pre-
defined polling period (Statistical), and highest/lowest ever recorded data points
(Historical). An example of a sensor output with the Present and Statistical data point
highlighted is provided below (see Figure 13).

Figure 13 Sensor Output in SubCombiner System

Present:
This is the present state of the sensor being queried.

Statistical:
The polling interval can be set within a range of {1.0-20.0 min} with a default setting of 5.0
min. It defines the window of the Statistical data for all sensors in the device. When the
Average, Min, and Max values are queried by the user, the values returned are for the last
completed period. The time elapsed since the last polling interval is also available.

Historical:
The historical data points consist of the highest and lowest data points ever recorded in
the combiner system. Highest data points pertain to current and temperature and the
lowest data points pertain only to temperature.

CCM Satcon Communication Control Module. This module is installed in the inverter and is
part of the “master-slave” function in bidirectional message transfers within the
network. The CCM unit acts as a “master” in Modbus RS485 protocols, and “slave” in
TCP/IP protocols.

Master/Slave The Modbus protocol used in this inverter communication system is based on a
Modbus Protocol single-master, multiple-slave protocol. Only one master is connected to the bus at
any one time, while one or more slaves can be connected to the same serial bus.
SatCon inverters are always slaves.

Modbus Protocol A serial communications protocol introduced many years ago for use with the
MODular DIgital CONtroller (MODICON) device. MODICON represented the first
Programmable Logic Controller (PLC). Modbus protocol provides the internal
standard that the SatCon Communication Controller uses for parsing messages.

OSI The Open Systems Interconnect is a standard established by the International

Standards Organization (ISO). OSI is a set of communications rules (protocol) that has
seven levels. These are, from the lowest level (level 1) to the highest level (level 7) as
follows: physical, data link, network, transport, session, presentation, and application

Protocol A mutually agreed upon format (or set of rules) for doing something. In computer
systems, it most commonly refers to a set of rules or standard that enables
computers to connect and transmit data to one another, hence the term
“communications protocol.” A protocol can be implemented by hardware, software,
or a combination of both.

RTU Remote Terminal Unit. A microprocessor-controlled device that acts as an interface

within a distributed control system. A typical RTU has communication interfaces for
media (usually serial RS232, RS485, RS422) and protocols (Modbus, DNP3, and other
proprietary protocols) so that it can communicate with other devices and/or
interface boards.
