PHILOSOPHY

INTRODUCTION

Meaning-The term philosophy has a Greek origin, i.e philosophia, which is made
of two word ,viz. phileo and Sophia .Phileo means “love” and Sophia means
“wisdom”. The literal meaning of philosophy is “love of knowledge and wisdom”.
A philosopher is a lower of wisdom .

DEFINITION- Philosophy has been defined by various scholars from various

angles.

According to Coleridge

“Philosophy is the science of sciences.”

According to Fitche.

“Philosophy is the science of knowledge.”

According to Cisero.

“Philosophy is the mother of all arts and the true medicine of mind.”

According to Aristippus.

“Philosophy is the ability to feel at ease any society.”

According to John dewey.

“Philosophy is critical reviewing of just those familiar things.”

Philosophy is the academic discipline concerned with making explicit the nature
and significance of ordinary and scientific beliefs and investigating the
intelligibility of concepts by means of rational argument concerning their
presuppositions, implications, and interrelationships; in particular ,the rational
investigation of the nature and structure of reality (Metaphysics),the resources and
limits of knowledge (Epistemiology ) the principles and import of moral
judgement (Ethics) , and the relationship between language and
reality(Semantics).

IMPORTANCE OF PHILOSOPHY IN EDUCATION

The importance of a philosophy of education is that it defines the purpose and

focus of an educational institution. It becomes a part of its mission statement which
in turn defines what subject are taught ,how they are taught and ,perhaps more
importantly ,the values that are taught both implicitly along with the subjects being
covered.

The purpose of education ,as described by philosophers,is generally considered to

be the reproduction of a culture .This can take several forms. In more liberal
environment it means the teaching of values that are considered to be desirable. In
any case ,it means that the values taught are those of the church, government ,or
other system that control the schools. History tells us that totalitarian governments
quickly take over the education system when they come to power . This was seen
in communist countries and fascist countries alike .If revolutionaries can not
control the education system they destroy it.

There is an old proverb that says “the hand that rocks the cradle rules the world .”
While it is certainly true that most children get most of their values from their
parents (the hand that rocks the cradle) they also get much from their teachers.
Teachers, especially in a society that hands off much of the child raising
responsibility to schools, get to do their share of cradle rocking .It is also true that
what a school teachers may either support or undermine what parents teach at
home.

Whether intended or unintended ,schools serve to reproduce a culture .Education

is critical part of a child’s socialization .It is where they learn not just the obvious
tools for life but the culture mores ,values and social tool for life .The question I
choose to address is who is responsible for determining the sort of training
students receive in school.

PHILOSOPHY OF POST GRADUATE NURSING

National health policy (NHP) 2002 emphasizes the need to prepare nurses to
function in super –speciality areas who are required in tertiary care ,institutions
,entrusting some limited public health functions to nurses after providing adequate
training ,and increase the ratio of degree holding vis a vis diploma holding holding
nurses.

It is observed that there is an acute shortage of nursing faculty in under graduate

and post graduate nursing programme in India.

Indian Nursing Council believes that:

1. Post graduate Programme is essential to prepare nurses to improve the

quality of nursing education and practice in India.
2. Post graduate programme in nursing builds upon and extends competence
acquired at the graduate levels ,emphasizes application of relevant theories
into nursing practice ,educaton ,administration and development of research
skills .
3. The programme prepares nurses for leadership position in nursing and health
fields who can function as nurse specialists ,consultants, educators,
administrators and researchers in a wide variety of professional settings in
meeting the National priorities and the changing needs of the society.
4. This programme provides the basis for the post master programme in
nursing .Further the programme encourages accountability and commitment
to life long learning which fosters improvement of quality care.
