OPEN HOUSE
MECOSTA — In an effort to generate
awareness, the Mecosta Youth and
Family Center is hosting an open
house this weekend.
The open house from 1 to 3 p.m. on
Saturday at the youth center’s site,
located at 587 South Washington
St. in Mecosta. The open house will
include fire truck demonstrations by
the Morton Township Fire Department,
a scavenger hunt and showcasing
of the facility including tours of the
classrooms and gymnasium.
The family center is the brain
of Organizers for Youth, Inc., a
grassroots organization dedicated
to bringing wholesome activities to
the young people of Mecosta. After
years of receiving alarming reports of
increasing crime rates at the juvenile
level, the group came together to
attempt to steer kids on the right path.
The group desires to offer the children
of Mecosta “windows of opportunity.”

Osceola Chamber of the American
Red Cross is collecting donations to
vaccinate an entire village in either
Africa or India against measles.
Tables will be set up for people to
donate and get information about
measles at various times between 8
a.m. and 5 p.m. from Nov. 15 through
Nov. 19 in the Instructional Resource
Center, Rankin Student Center Atrium
and Art and Sciences Commons on
the Ferris State University campus.
Donations also can be made from 9
a.m. to 4 p.m. at the local American
Red Cross office, located at 218
Warren Ave.
For every $1 collected, a child can
be vaccinated, said organizer Natalie
Mitchell. The Red Cross hopes to
raise $500 in the campaign.

up in the holiday hubbub when
you’re running around looking for the
perfect gift. While the holidays can be
expensive, there are ways to save.

the following tips to help you save
money at the gas pump so you can
focus on your holiday celebrations.
Slow Down and Get Some Air
• Vehicles use less fuel the slower
they travel. While staying within
the speed limits, try dropping your
highway speed by 10 mph to see big
savings at the pump.
• Calm down. According to the U.S.
Department of Energy, aggressive
driving can lower your gas mileage
by 33 percent on the highway and by
5 percent in the city.
Fuel Up
• Buy the right fuel. Look in your
vehicle’s owner’s manual for the
correct octane level for your vehicle’s
engine. Odds are that it will be regular
unleaded, since fewer than 5 percent
of the vehicles on the road require the
use of premium fuel.
Drop Some Pounds
• Extra weight in your vehicle makes it
work harder, hence less fuel mileage.
According to the U.S. Department
of Energy, an extra 100 pounds in
the car can reduce a vehicle’s fuel
economy by up to 2 percent. If you
have a trunk full of junk, empty it out
for better fuel economy.

report issues an air quality warning,
some people stay indoors, but there’s
no guarantee that the air in the home
is any healthier than the air outside.
Common indoor air pollutants such
as dust mite grime, pet dander,
mold, tobacco smoke, and airborne

Adults spend up to 90 percent of their
time indoors and inhale approximately
2,300 gallons of air a day. Given
that, people face significant, ongoing

cause eye, nose and throat irritation,
respiratory problems, headache,
fatigue and even allergy symptoms.
Asthmatics, the elderly and children
are the most vulnerable to indoor
air pollutants and can develop
more serious symptoms. Prolonged
exposure to some pollutants has
even been linked to cancer or other
serious diseases.
Homeowners do, however, have the
power to combat indoor air pollutants
and improve their home’s air quality.
One common first line of defense is
a home air filtration system. These
devices filter pollutants from the air
circulating throughout the home.

AVOIDING FLOOD-DAMAGED
USED CARS
(NAPSI)-It’s important to steer clear
of used cars that were waterlogged
in floods, hurricanes and other
storms. Experts say over 75 percent
of declared federal disasters are
related to floods. The vehicles can
turn up in areas thousands of miles
from where the damage occurred,
and unknowing consumers who
purchase a waterdamaged auto from
a dishonest seller may have little
recourse.
A Growing Concern
It’s estimated that the number of
waterlogged wrecks on the market
has doubled in recent years, despite
the fact that most flooddamaged
vehicles are writtten off by insurance
companies. Indeed, many of the cars
make their way back to the used-
car market, rebuilt and disguised as
ordinary used cars with clean titles.
Fortunately, there are ways to spot
the telltale signs of a flood-damaged
car. Carfax offers these tips:
Look Around
Check the trunk, dashboard and
glove compartment for silt, mud, rust
and other signs of water damage. You
should also examine upholstery and
carpeting closely. If it doesn’t match
the interior or fits loosely, it may have
been replaced. Discolored, faded
or stained materials might indicate
water damage.
Run A Test
Test the interior and exterior lights,
as well as the windshield wipers,
turn signals, DC power outlet, radio,
heater and air conditioner several
times to be certain they work. Also,
turn the ignition key and make sure
the accessory and warning lights and
gauges work properly. Be certain the
ABS and air bag lights come on, too.
The Nose Knows
Smell the interior of the car to check
for musty odors. It’s also smart to

Michigan Gov. Jennifer M. Granholm has proclaimed October as

“Michigan Car-Deer Crash Safety Awareness Month.”
In Michigan in 2009 there were 61,486 reported car-deer crashes with 10 motorists killed and 1,648
injured. About 80 percent of all car-deer crashes take place on two-lane roads between dusk and dawn.
(Of the reported car-deer accidents Kent County is number one and Montcalm County is number five in
the state’s highest accident rate).
What can you do?
• Stay aware, awake, alert, and sober.
• Remember, safety belts are your best defense in any collision.
• Be alert for deer in spring and fall, especially at dawn and dusk.
• Heed deer crossing and speed limit signs, particularly on two-lane roads.
If a crash is unavoidable:
• Don’t swerve!
• Brake firmly
• Hold on to the steering wheel.
• Stay in your lane.
• Bring you vehicle to a controlled stop.
