NATIONAL CURRICULUM FOR BIOLOGY

GRADE IX-X

Summary
The main aspiration is to enable all students to develop their capacities as successful learners,
confident individuals, responsible citizens and effective contributors to the society.
Chapter 1 describes the main strategy adopted in designing and revising the curriculum that
include undertaking basic research for developing new model of curriculum planning
implementation and evaluation. A comparative analysis is being done by a research team with
many international curriculums.
Next phase describes the need assessment on which the curricula should be revised. A
comprehensive survey is being done for this purpose.

Further problems recognized in the previous curriculums and design of the curriculum is
explained that the new curriculum uses hands one experience and utilization of resources
available in the student’s environment.

Further standards, benchmarks and learning outcomes are explained. Standards are what
students should know and be able to do. Standards are based on higher order thinking, deep
knowledge, substantive conversation, connection to the world beyond classroom.
The theme in biology curriculum are designed that are cross disciplinary in nature.in the
present revise exercise it was decided that the same set of themes would be used right from
grades IX to The themes are largely self-explanatory and close to those adopted in 2000
curriculum.
The contents of the curriculum is divided into different sections section 1 explains study of life
and biodiversity including definition, division and relation of biology to other sciences. Section 2
explains cell biology and cell cycle.
Section 3 explains life processes. Next section explains continuity in life like reproduction and
inheritance system. Section 5 describes ecology and ecosystem and last section application of
biology like pharmacology and use in drugs medicines antibiotics and vaccines.

At the end the salient features which is the curriculum is fully in harmony with the national
priorities and will provide important momentum for achieving our vision for students. The focus
area of the curriculum are challenges and enjoyment, breadth, progression, depth,
personalization and choice, coherence and relevance. And glossary of the terms are explained.
Chapter 11 which is last chapter explains the glossary of terms used in the curriculum.
