CE 482/582 TOPICS COVERED:
1. Masonry Material Properties, including special inspection and verification of f’m
strength. Materials include grout, mortar, brick, block, hollow clay, and reinforcing.
2. Masonry Beam Flexure and Shear Design and Analysis under Service Loads.
3. Masonry OutofPlane wall Design and Analysis for solid grouted walls or partially
grouted walls under flexure or flexure and axial service loads. Apply to Column and
Pilaster Designs. Introduction to use of interaction diagram for refined analysis method.
4. Calculation, Application, and Distribution of Code Dictated Forces to elements and
lateral load resisting systems of a onestory masonry building. Introduction of Force
Distribution through roof diaphragm and into shear walls and wall piers/beams.
5. Introduction to Masonry Inplane Shear Wall Design under Service Loads: Shear Wall
Action and analysis/design/detailing of wall for shear, axial, and bending forces.
6. Review of Masonry Strength Design of beams and Introduction of strength design of
slender walls.

Learning Objectives for CE 482/582 Masonry Design
1. Become familiar/skilled with knowledge of how/why to specify Masonry Material
Properties, including special inspection and verification of f’m strength. Materials
include grout, mortar, brick, block, hollow clay, and reinforcing.
2. Become Skilled in Masonry Beam Flexure and Shear Design and Analysis under
Service Loads.
3. Become Skilled in Masonry OutofPlane wall Design and Analysis for solid grouted
walls or partially grouted walls under flexure or flexure and axial service loads.
Apply to Column and Pilaster Designs. Introduction to use of interaction diagram for
refined analysis method.
4. Review and Become skilled to Calculate, Apply, and Distribute Code Dictated Forces
to elements and lateral load resisting systems of a onestory masonry building.
Introduction of Force Distribution through roof diaphragm and into shear walls and
wall piers/beams.
5. Introduction to Masonry Inplane Shear Wall Design under Service Loads: Develop
initial understanding of Shear Wall Action and analysis/design/detailing of wall for
shear, axial, and bending forces.
6. Review of Masonry Strength Design of beams and Introduction of strength design of
slender walls.
7. For graduate students the following additional objective is applicable:
To demonstrate advanced understanding of the objectives 1 – 6 above. This will be
accomplished through additional reading and homework problems to provide greater
emphasis on development of analysis, synthesis and evaluation skills. The analysis and
design of the onestory masonry building provides the context for the student to explore
the integration and application of concepts covered in the course.
