One Surgery

we welcomed Little
Ying to the the hospital.
As Zhao Na, one of the
volunteers, helped Little
Ying’s mother fill out some
of our forms, Little Ying
watched quietly. If you think
of a high fashion model --
penetrating eyes that hint a
serious confidence, not shy
but quietly radiating dignity
-- that is the impression you
get from seeing the young
five-year-old Little Ying.
Little Ying’s family hails
from a town in the Pingliang
area, about seven hours to the
east of Lanzhou. Two years
ago, when she was three, she
caught a cold and coughed
every night. It wouldn’t get
better, so the family took
her to be examined by the
village clinic. At the clinic, the
doctor noticed that her heart

was abnormal. So the family (Dr. & Mrs. Wang)
went down to nearest town

needs to spend more than
2,000 yuan for the treatment
of Little Ying’s congenital
heart disease. Consequently,
after basic sustenance and
medical costs, Little Ying’s
family has almost no income.
Little Ying was born with
an atrial septal defect (ASD), a
hole between the two smaller
chambers in her heart, called
“atriums.” Because of this
hole, oxygenated blood
from the left side of her
heart leaked into the right
side of her heart with every
heartbeat. As a result, her
heart pumped less effectively
than it should, depriving her
of energy and stunting her
growth and development.
At 13.5 kilograms, she was
much below the normal
weight for a five-year-old girl.
Thanks to your
sponsorship, Little Ying
received surgery for her
heart defect on September
30, 2010. The surgeons at
the Lanzhou Military District
General Hospital used a patch
to close up the hole in the
wall between her two atriums.
After a nine-day recovery in
the hospital, with the support
of her family, the doctors,
nurses, and the staff of Little
Red Scarf, Little Ying was
back on her feet and ready
to go home. Thanks to your
help, Little Ying can enjoy
a normal childhood with a
healthy, working heart -- truly
a gift that will last a lifetime.
