The Danger of Vain and Idle Speech

Vain and idle speech is a klippah associated with the air element of consciousness, and likewise it
is a klippah of Hod, Splendor or Surrender; and naturally we may ponder why it is considered a
klippah, given that in itself, generally speaking, vain and idle speech appears neutral, and appears
to cause no harm, and more so, it is the basis of much socialization in the world and is consider
quite normal, or even necessary.

First, we need to remember the great power of speech, the creative and destructive power that is
in it, and that through our thoughts and words we connect ourselves with corresponding spiritual
forces, divine, admixed and demonic. If you observe the energy of vain and idle speech closely you
will find that at best it connects us with archonic, admixed, spiritual forces, but more so you will
find that very often, if we engage in vain and idle speech for any significant period of time, there
is the generation of heavy energy, and our speech ventures into various forms of negative or evil
speech, boasting, gossip, and at times things much worse; hence, it tends to open us to the
influence of klippot - forces of the Other Side.

If you consider when we are prone to engage in vain and idle speech, speaking without clear and
conscious intention, and speaking without good reason, we are not centered within, but are bound
up in the surface consciousness, and we are speaking from a place of anxiety or nervousness, or in
a mindless or unconscious fashion - sometimes it’s because we are afraid of the silence, or natural
pauses within conversations, sometimes because we are seeking attention or seeking to draw
energy from others, sometimes because we are seeking control, and for various other unconscious
reasons. In every case, though, save when we engage in mundane conversation and socialization
with the sacred heart, for the sake of others in love and compassion, we are not ourselves when
we do this, and the conversation does not tend to uplift us or others, but rather it tends to “bring
us down,” generating heavy energy.

Quite simply, if you observe it, it is not good and is not harmless - it’s dangerous, because it opens
us to influences of greater klippot associated with thought and emotion, and speech, and we are
wise to avoid it.

How many times in the midst of vain and idle speech have you realized after the fact that you said
things that surprised you, things that, in truth, you would rather not have said, or things that you
pondered afterwards, “what possessed me to say that?” Indeed, this is the danger of vain and idle
speech, and why it is accounted as a klippah.

It is a good practice to be careful with casual, mundane speech, and to beware of vain and idle
speech, and instead to be conscious of your words, speaking with conscious intention, and good
reason, joining your speech with your intelligence, and letting your speech be guided by your heart
and soul, your inner being - inner tzaddik; and when you speak, it is good to set your mind on those
things that are above, and cleave to the Holy Shekinah, seeking to see the good and draw it out
with your speech. If and when there is nothing good to say, or nothing to be said, it is better to be
silent than to take up vain or idle speech to fill the apparent void - silence too can be wonderful to
share together in friendship and love, and when engaged with an open heart and uplifted mind it
can nurture and nourish the soul.
As we know, through speech, the Word, God creates, and when God speaks there is always clear
and conscious intention, and there is purpose and meaning, and what God speaks comes into being
just as spoken by God; seeking to draw near to God and cleave to God, it is good to learn to speak
in a similar way, being conscious and mindful with the power of speech, and speaking with purpose
and meaning, able to also entertain silence when it is time. May we strive to acquire skill at this!

May we be blessed with the Wisdom of the Living Word, and may we always speak in Wisdom!
Amen.

Shalom Aleichem!

Shabbat Shalom!

Thank you so much for elucidating what vain and idle speech is. I have long wondered, where is the
line? because as you say, it is necessary to engage in mundane conversation while in this world.

A contemplation arose of the Garden of Eden and the Kerub with the sword flashing this way and
that. There was a connection that I heard recently of this sword in the hands of the Kerub and the
sword of flashing fire out of the mouth of Yeshua in Revelations. A sword has two sides, and these
two sides can be contemplated as mercy and severity. What is interesting about a sword, is these
two sides are joined. I am wondering if we could contemplate this in terms of speech coming from
the Sacred Heart? With speech and intelligence joined in our speaking?

I was also wondering if we could contrast this to the serpent? Because serpents have forked
tongues. I was contemplating the forked tongue as idle speech because idle speech has such a
tendency to draw upon forces of the other side. And in this world of Assiyah that is 2/3 darkness,
that's most often where it goes.

I was also wondering if we could contemplate the power to bind and the power to liberate in this?
Because, we have been taught that there is incredible manifesting power in our speech. I was
wondering if the sword could be contemplated as this power to bind and to liberate in awareness—
with speech and intelligence joined and the serpent, this power in unconsciousness?

With this, there was also the contemplation how in the beginning, we think that speech is seated in
the throat, and intelligence is from the head. In this teaching I'm hearing that actually, both
speech and intelligence are seated in the heart. Is this movement to the heart when speech and
intelligence are joined? This bring up the story of Adam and Eve again, because even back to Adam
divorcing Lilith, to the eating of the Tree of the knowledge of good and evil, there is this struggle
to act from the intelligence of the heart. Most often, there is an acting in selfishness—for oneself
alone. This is such a contrast to what we see with Yeshua, who is called "the second Adam" who
says "no one has greater love than this: that they lay their life down for their friends." and "This is
the greatest commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you."

Holy One, may we glorify you, may you empower us to join intelligence with speech! Amen.

Blessings and Shalom,

Marion

Blessings to you in the Holy Name of Yeshua Messiah!

The sword in the hands of the Kerubim who guard the path to the Tree of Life and the sword that
comes from the mouth of the Risen Messiah speaking to the seven churches does, indeed,
correspond with Mercy (Hesed) and Judgement (Din, Gevurah); and with speech we may say this,
we invoke either Mercy or Judgment - good or admixture and evil. The sword turning this way or
that has one single blade with two edges, and this hints at something of the Tree of Knowledge of
Good and Evil, for there is one Tree corresponding with good and evil, and with Mercy and
Judgment, the Sefirot and the klippot. With our thoughts, speech and actions we are invoking and
manifesting influxes of either the Sefirot or klippot, and in this is the judgment, for through our
thoughts, speech and actions we manifest the reality of our experience, whether heavenly or
hellish, or something in between; in this speech is central, for as we speak we create and shape
the reality of our experience quite literally, much more than we may realize.

Now, generally speaking, when our intelligence (ruach) is not joined with our speech (nefesh) and
we speak in an unconscious fashion, our speech tends to draw from the klippot, impure emanations
of the Other Side, and this is the danger of vain and idle speech - unconscious speech; but when
we join our intelligence with our speech, and we are aware and conscious of our words, then we
are able to draw upon the spiritual power of the Sefirot, the Divine Attributes.

In his Letter to the Ephesians St. Paul writes: “Take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of
the Spirit, which is the word of God. Pray in the Spirit at all times in every prayer and
supplication” (6:17-18). Contemplating the tongue and speech in correlation with a sword, if
we speak and pray in the Spirit of God, our intelligence being joined with the Spirit as we speak
and pray, then our speech becomes as the word of God, aligned and in harmony with the Living
Word, an expression of the Living Word, and we are able to invoke influxes of the Holy Sefirot of
Atzilut - the full force of the Holy Name.

The Serpent does, indeed, have a forked tongue, and the Serpent is known as the deceiver, and the
father-of-lies, and therefore a forked tongue has always implied deception and lies, or bearing
false witness; when speaking with Havvah (Eve) the Serpent deceives her, and she succumbs to
temptation. Havvah corresponds with speech and Adam corresponds with intelligence, and they
were divided, giving an opening for the Serpent - the force of the Other Side, to enter in, and
through this there was a fall from grace and a very different reality became manifest.

Deception, lies, false witness, this is a common form of evil speech, just as is malicious gossip,
slander and cursing, and such. Vain and idle speech can easily devolve into one form or another of
evil speech, and very often it does, and this is the danger of it.

In this light we may recall a teaching of Adonai Yeshua, that it is not what goes into the mouth of a
person that makes them unclean, but it is what comes out of their mouth that makes them unclean
- their words, their speech.

Shalom Aleichem!
