III. DISCUSSION
In the assay of obtaining Iodine value for canola oil, the solution is left to stand
iodine. (Fisher & Hart, 1971, p. 74). The procedure requires addition of
iodobromide TS, however, deviation to iodochloride was done, since the former
was not available in the laboratory. The endpoint was observed with the discharge
of the blue color. In this assay, the blank consumed more than 50 mL. The
disappearance of the blue color was observed after 62.30 mL of the titrant was
consumed. However, the blank was overly titrated, so accuracy in the calculations
is reduced. Trial 1 consumed 36.00 mL of the titrant with the persistence of a lightly
colored solution, indicating endpoint. Trial 2 on the other hand, consumed 45.35
the two trials is 49.0364%. The very high deviation of the trials can be due to the
incomplete reaction of the solution that should have been completed upon standing
of the solution. Another factor could be degradation iodine due to light exposure.
Both iodine values obtained in the assay do not comply to the official requirement
The calculated amount of Iodine Value for both trials are more than the
the calculated deviation between trials are too high. Therefore, the
computation shows that the calculated values are inaccurate and imprecise.
