different back then.
JAMES: What do you mean, Kristy? What did he tell you?
KRISTY: Well, he was never alone with my grandmother until
they got married. A family member was always present.
JAMES: Wow! I think that would be uncomfortable.
KRISTY: Well, my grandfather said one thing people don’t realize
is how secure this custom made everyone feel.
JAMES: How so?
KRISTY: Well, her family got to know him really well.
JAMES: Interesting. I never really thought about that.

DOUG: I don’t think this is the right café, Lena. It doesn’t look
very good.
LENA: I’m sure this is the one. I know it doesn’t look great, but
the menu looks interesting.
DOUG: But look! That waiter is wearing a horrible shirt.
LENA: Doug, maybe he likes bright colors!
DOUG: I don’t mean the colors. There’s a huge stain on it. And
there’s a hole in it.
LENA: Yeah, actually, I see what you mean.
DOUG: And look at this table! It’s badly scratched. It looks like
someone tried to write his name with a knife.
LENA: And my glass is chipped. I could cut myself!
DOUG: Let’s get out of here.
