First negative constructive speech

Description:

Students need to find the other student's first affirmative constructive speech in order to refute
it.

I am on the negative side and refute my classmate, Alex's, first affirmative constructive
speech, "People Should Have the Right to Die". The first article is Alex's, and the second one is my
first negative constructive speech.

Debate Class Assignment 2 D9635330 Junior Alex

Topic: Medicine/Health — People should have the right to die.

Thank you, Ladies and Gentlemen. Today the resolution is, “People should have the right to die.”
we on the affirmative team, strongly support this resolution. We have 3 reasons: the pain on
physical, mental pain and hospital costs.

Our first point is the pain on physical. Most of the time patients are suffering extremely pain
that we cannot think of, such as the patients who get cancer. Especially, when people get an
incurable disease, they suffer and eat the drug for temporary comfort until they die. Moreover,
they need people to care them. The truth is that there is not only the patient herself/ himself
suffered but also their family.

Our second point is mental pain. Patient also suffered in mental pain, while everyone keep
tell him to live. However, we are not the patient, how could we realize the pain. Tell the truth;
saying that people must seize any chance to live is not proper to apply on them. For example,
you were cut four limbs and you keep blooding. You may want to choose die rather than
accept any surgery.

Our third point is hospital costs. Most people who are hospitalized may need to prepare a
lot of money to pay the bill. Not to mention, patients usually need to hire a nurse to take care
them. Because their family needs to work to pay the bills from hospitals, they have no choice but
hire one.

To sum up, patients suffer both the physical and mental pain and bring the burden to
families. Although, the patients always are told that they do not need to worry about the
money, their family will handle it. In fact, patients know everything quite well and they hope to
end their pain and stop being a pain in the family. Why can’t they chose to die, they deserve it.

First Negative Constructive Speech

People should have the right to die

Thank you, Ladies and Gentlemen. Today we are debating the resolution, “People should
have the right to die.” We, on the negative team, strongly oppose this resolution. First, I will refute
the affirmative side; then I will give our points.

Their first reason was the pain on physical. They said that patients who get cancer or have
incurable disease suffer greatly pain and they only get a short comfort by drugs. And also, their
family suffers, too. We have two responses. First, it is not true that because the patients are under
an overwhelming pain, they can choose death to end their pain. The point is the attitude. There
are many cases that patients who have incurable disease still live their life worthily. They choose
to finish their unfulfilled dreams instead of to die. They make their life have a perfect ending.
Second, it’s not true that the patients’ family suffer physical pain with the patients.

Their second reason was mental pain. They said that the patients are under a mental torture
when people stop them from ending their life. We have one response. It is not true because
supports from family and friends are the greatest power to sustain the patients’ faith in struggling
for life. It won’t be a burden for the patients.

Their third reason was hospital costs. They said that the bill of medical treatment is a big
burden for the whole family. We have one response. It is not true because human’ life can’t be
measured by money. Life is priceless!

I have refuted the affirmative’s points. Now, I will give ours. We have two points: value of
life and medical ethics.

Our first point is value of life. As I mention before, human’s life is priceless; meanwhile, it’s
sacred. None has right to take away a person’s life even if he/she is a doctor. We should respect
out life, and make ourselves’ life become more worthwhile.

Our second point is medical ethics. As far as everyone knows, the doctor’s job is to treat the
patients, but not to kill them. It violates medical ethics which each doctor is taught to follow. If
the doctor also doesn’t respect life, what their patients should do.

We have talked about value of life and medical ethics, and have shown that people have
no right to die. For these reasons we beg to oppose.
