CONTACT YOUR HOST INSTITUTE/ SUPERVISOR
In most cases you will have been in contact with your hosting department, your
partner or your academic supervisor. If you are still seeking contact or a supervisor
for your project, please check the websites of the university (www.uni-jena.de). In
preparing research work it is important to establish contact in advance with your host
institute in order to:
inquire for stipends (e.g. DAAD, Humboldt, DFG etc.)
clarify any special conditions attached to your research project
obtain information about premises and equipment (using PC, lab, library)

VISA FOR GERMANY
In general, the embassies and consulates of the Federal Republic of Germany are
responsible for issuing visas. You should contact the respective embassy as soon as
possible for information, application and about any special visa
formalities. As a rule, you must submit your visa application,
together with all necessary documents, in person.
EU-Nationals
EU-Nationals and EEA-Nationals (Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Frankce,
Greeece, Great bitain, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg,
Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Sweden and Spain) do not require a visa to enter
Germany. The Residence Act grants freedom of movement to employees, providers
or recipients of services, and the self- employed, as well as to their families. It is
sufficient to register with the local authorities in Germany.
Non EU-Nationals
In general all non EU-Nationals need a visa for stays in Germany. A visa is not
required for semi-annual visits of up to three months of nationals of those countries
for which the EU has abolished the visa requirement (Australia, Canada, Island,
Israel, Japan, Liechtenstein, Monaco, New Zealand, Norway, San Marino Switzerland
and the United States). Registration at the local authorities is necessary.
Note: It is important that you do not apply for a tourist visa.
Detailed information about visa regulations, a table of countries whose citizens require /
do not require visas to enter Germany and a list of German Embassies in foreign
countries can be found at the website of the Federal Foreign Office (Auswärtiges Amt:
www.auswaertiges-amt.de).

REGISTERING IN JENA
2
When you arrive in Jena there are a few administrative details you will need to take
care of. You will need to register at the local Foreigners' Office (Ausländerbehörde)
and at the Citizens' Service (Bürgerservice). The German registration regulations
require registration for everyone who has or changes residence within Germany.
Foreigners' Office
After calling at the registration office you have to register in person at the Foreigners'
Office (Ausländerbehörde) where you will be given the residence permit
(Aufenthaltsgenehmigung/ Aufenthaltserlaubnis). Anyone who does not have a
German passport and intends to spend more than 3 months in Germany has to apply
for the residence permit at the foreigners' office. A visa is merely a “temporary
residence permit”.

BANK ACCOUNT
You need to open a current account with a bank, Sparkasse or post office as soon as
possible to receive your scholarship or salary and to carry out regular payments, such
as rent, insurance, telephone etc. The most basic account at German banks is called
“Girokonto”. The different banks offer more or less the same service. You can get
money from your account from a cash point at any time, you can transfer money
(rent, telephone, insurance etc.), might do internet or electronic banking and your
salary or scholarship can be directly deposited on your account. But it is worthwile
comparing conditions, charges and other offers carefully.
It could be useful to ask your bank at home whether it cooperates with a specific
bank in Germany. This could shorten and cheapen the transfer of money to the bank
abroad, if necessary.
In order to open a bank account you will need your passport and your registration
certificate and / or your residence permit.

Despite the fact that the number of students has quadrupled since 1989, the
university, now hosting 20,000 students, is not overcrowded.
More than 2000 lecturers and researchers, 335 of whom are professors, ensure
quality teaching and training commensurate with a classic university. In addition,
more than 800 scientists and technical staff work on research projects financed by
outside sponsors.
