LADY JANE GREY TO ELIZABETH I
G. J. MEYER
In 1485, young Henry Tudor, whose claim to the throne was so
weak as to be almost laughable, crossed the English Channel
from France at the head of a ragtag little army and took the
crown from the family that had ruled England for almost four
hundred years. Half a century later his son, Henry VIII, desperate
to rid himself of his rst wife in order to marry a second,
launched a reign of terror aimed at taking powers no previous
monarch had even dreamed of possessing. In the process he
plunged his kingdom into generations of division and disorder,

of the Tudors
• First-ever biography of Lady Margaret Beaufort

‘Scintillating’ THE FINANCIAL TIMES; ‘Norton cuts an admirably
clear path through tangled Tudor intrigues.’ JENNY UGLOW

Born in the midst of the Wars of the Roses, Margaret Beaufort

became the greatest heiress of her time. She survived a turbulent
life, marrying four times and enduring imprisonment before
passing her claim to the crown of England to her son, Henry
VII, the rst of the Tudor monarchs. Margaret’s royal blood
placed her on the fringes of the Lancastrian royal dynasty.
After divorcing her rst husband at the age of ten, she married
the king’s half-brother, Edmund Tudor, becoming a widow
and bearing her only child, the future Henry VII, before her
fourteenth birthday. Margaret was always passionately devoted
to the interests of her son who claimed the throne through her.
She embroiled herself in both treason and conspiracy as she
sought to promote his claims, allying herself with the Yorkist
Queen, Elizabeth Woodville, in an attempt to depose Richard III.
She was imprisoned by Richard and her lands conscated, but
she continued to work on her son’s behalf, ultimately persuading
her fourth husband, the powerful Lord Stanley, to abandon
the king in favour of Henry on the eve of the decisive Battle of
Bosworth. It was Lord Stanley himself who placed the crown on
Henry’s head on the battleeld.
Henry VII gave his mother unparalleled prominence during
his reign. She established herself as an independent woman
and ended her life as regent of England, ruling on behalf of her
seventeen-year-old grandson, Henry VIII.

TIBET’S FORGOTTEN HEROES A highly emotive collection of rst-hand accounts

THE STORY OF TIBET’S ARMED RESISTANCE of the struggle to resist Chinese oppression in Tibet
AGAINST CHINA
BIRGIT VAN DE WIJER

In 1949, the People’s Liberation Army of China sent troops into Tibet.
At rst, Chinese soldiers behaved respectfully towards the local people,
distributing clothes, blankets, tools, medicine and even money. Soon,
however, it became clear that a new era in Tibetan history had
begun, namely one of oppression, atrocities and ... resistance. Tibet’s
Forgotten Heroes is a unique historical document on Tibetan resistance
to Chinese oppression.
For the very rst time since the events, forty-eight stories by Tibetan
warriors involved in the struggle for freedom are given unabridged,
creating a vivid and emotional spectrum of events in Tibet since 1949.
Birgit van de Wijer has been careful to provide an honest transcription
of the interviews, acting only as a ‘service hatch’.
The rst-hand interviews as well as the translation into English were
conducted by native Tibetans. The book is the result of two years’ work
with dozens of Tibetans involved.

Birgit van de Wijer was born in Holland in 1960. She has an MA in

A history of the rst war between the East India THE FIRST ANGLO-SIKH WAR
Company and Sikh Empire, 1845-1846 AMARPAL SIDHU

During the eighteenth and early years of the nineteenth century, the red
tide of British expansion had covered the entire Indian subcontinent,
reaching the borders of the Punjab. There the great Sikh ruler Runjeet
Singh rapidly developed his army to thwart any British advance north of
the Sutlej river into his Kingdom.
The First Anglo-Sikh War broke out in 1845; from the start it was
marred by Victorian arrogance and bluster on the British side, and
personal ambition, intrigue and treason in the Sikh camp. Five keenly
fought contests ensued, including the great battle of Ferozeshah. With its
ammunition spent, artillery destroyed and with no food and water, the
British force found itself caught between two powerful Sikh armies. The
Governor-General Sir Hardinge, accompanying the army, gave orders to
burn all state papers in preparation for the worst; the fate of India would
be decided that day.
Amarpal Sidhu writes a balanced tale using numerous eyewitness
accounts of the First Sikh War, a conict characterised by treachery,
suering and incredible bravery on both sides. Over a hundred photographs
and new scale maps show the campaign as never before.

FRONTSTALAG 142 A moving account of what life was really like

THE INTERNMENT DIARY OF AN ENGLISH LADY for women in a German internment camp
KATHERINE LACK
In December 1940, as the coldest winter in living memory fastened its
grip on war torn France, the Nazi conquerors rounded up nearly 5,000
people, mostly women and children, and sent them to an internment
camp. Their destination, Frontstalag 142, was in the Besançon army
barracks near the German border. There they remained for months in
conditions so bad that many died of cold, food poisoning and disease.
The internees had only one thing in common: they all held British
papers. Wealthy expatriates, holiday-makers caught out by the speed
of the Blitzkrieg, wives of First World War ‘tommies’, French nationals
born in England – all were on the list. Among them were two English
ladies, Miss Kathleen and Miss Fanny Twemlow – great aunts of the
author.
Aunt Kathleen soon succumbed to the terrible conditions, but was
hospitalized and survived. Aunt Fan remained in the camps (she was
sent to a camp in Vittel after Besançon) for a year until, aged sixty, she
was released. The conditions in Frontstalag 142 are revealed here in all
their harrowing detail, through Aunt Fan’s diary and the memoirs of
some of the other survivors. Aunt Fan was an artist, and her sketches
of camp life, many drawn secretly on tiny scraps of paper and kept in
the family ever since, give a poignant insight into the hardships these
women endured in this forgotten chapter of the war.

The enduring popularity of the BBC TV series Dad’s Army has focused
‘Wonderful stories’ attention on one of the strangest and least military armies ever formed
THE DAILY MIRROR – the British Home Guard. What started as an improvised band of
volunteers had grown by 1942 into a conscripted, disciplined and well-
equipped force with a strength of nearly two million men. Norman
Longmate, an ex-member of the Home Guard and an authority on
wartime Britain, has collected together a wealth of hilarious anecdotes
as well as all the unlikely facts to produce the rst popular history of
the Home Guard to be written since the war.

Norman Longmate, ex-Private ‘F’ Company, 3rd Sussex Battalion, Home

remarkably accurate in its portrayal of life in the Home Guard. After the

An entertaining and hugely readable THANK YOU, HERMANN GOERING

autobiography of one of Britain’s most famous THE LIFE OF A SPORTS WRITER
sports journalists BRIAN SCOVELL

In his time working for the Daily Sketch and Daily Mail, Brian Scovell
probably reported on more Test matches and more international
football matches than any other English sports writer. This fascinating,
amusing, and nally very moving memoir is lled with hundreds of
anecdotes and insights into top sports personalities and other public

untold stories about, among others, Margaret Thatcher, John Major,
Princess Diana, Brian Lara, Enoch Powell, and Alan Sugar.
Following a German bombing raid on the Isle of Wight when he
was a child, Brian spent two years in hospital listening to match
commentaries on the radio and reading the leading sports writer of
the day, Tom Phillips. So he has Goering to thank for the way his life
turned out. His mother wanted him to be a banker, but in that hospital

Celebrating 50 years in Fleet Street in 2010, there are very few better

A fascinating and very readable exploration of YOUNG OFFENDERS

how young offenders have passed through the JUVENILE DELINQUENCY 1700-2000
legal justice system over 300 years PAMELA HORN
ALSO BY PAMELA HORN

In the early twenty-rst century juvenile crime has become a matter of

widespread social and political concern and debate. Young Oenders
examines the way in which attitudes – and the law itself – have evolved
in dealing with juvenile wrongdoing from the early eighteenth century
to the end of the twentieth. By the use of court and prison records,
parliamentary papers, newspapers, the writings of reformers and other
records, such as those covering transportation and life in the overseas
penal colonies, it considers the way in which the punishment of the
young and the denition of delinquency itself have developed. The
gender dierence between boys’ misdeeds, often involving theft and
violence, and girls’ oending, which frequently relates to sexual and
moral matters, is also considered. The book shows how attempts at
reforming oenders by the creation of purpose-built institutions have
met with disillusion and discouragement and have been followed by a
reversion to harsher treatment.

THE biography of Mark Antony MARK ANTONY

A LIFE
PATRICIA SOUTHERN
History has not been kind to Mark Antony, but then he was probably
his own worst enemy, fatally awed, too fond of wine and women,
extravagant, impetuous, reckless, always in debt, and attached to all
the wrong people. In modern eyes, inuenced by Shakespeare, Antony
is perhaps the ultimate tragic hero, who gave up everything for the love
of a woman, Cleopatra VII, ruler of Egypt. Octavian presented Antony
as a weakling, completely dominated by Cleopatra, and therefore a
threat to Rome by dint of his association with the unbridled ambitions
of the Egyptian Queen to rule the world. While Antony attended to the
eastern half of the Roman world, shoring up Octavian whenever he

THE HEIRS OF KING VERICA A fascinating glimpse of British life from the
CULTURE AND POLITICS IN ROMAN BRITAIN rst century onwards under Roman rule
MARTIN HENIG

Britain is traditionally considered to have been conquered by the

Romans in AD 43. In fact the intervention took place because an
important faction of the Atrebates tribe under King Verica persuaded
the Emperor Claudius to intervene against other Britons who had
invaded its territory. Central southern Britain was liberated by a forced
landing in Chichester harbour and thereafter remained largely free
from the inuence of the Roman army. It became Roman under the
patronage of a powerful high king, Tiberius Claudius Togidubnus.

A detailed and profusely illustrated history of ROMAN CLOTHING AND FASHION

clothing and fashion in the Roman Empire ALEXANDRA CROOM

There is plenty of information about military dress in Roman Britain

and the rest of the Roman Empire, but the evidence for civilian dress
has not been comprehensively looked at since the 1930s.
In this richly illustrated survey, Alexandra Croom describes the
range and style of clothing worn throughout the Western Empire and
shows how fashions changed between the rst and the sixth centuries.
After a short introduction to the evidence (from archaeology, art and
literature), and to the manufacture of clothing and its use in status

A fresh and illuminating study on the planning THE PLANNING OF ROMAN ROADS AND WALLS
of the principal Roman roads and walls IN NORTHERN BRITAIN
of northern Britain JOHN POULTER
The Roman Empire depended on its roads and walls for trade and
security, but before these vast structures were built, their courses
would need to have been chosen and their lines set out across the
countryside. In the absence of any signicant Roman literature on the
subject, John Poulter has devised a way of detecting the directions in
which Roman surveyors may have been working when setting out their

ED RAYNER & RON STAPLEY
History is not something that counts to men’s credit alone, though they
have often claimed it as their exclusive achievement. This book deals
with the part that women have played in history, and acknowledges
their role, although at the time they may have received little
acknowledgment for it. For women of all stations and in all walks of
life have made their contribution to human history, whether they have
been queens or rulers, scientists or doctors, entertainers or artists,
radicals or conservatives, or simply wives and mothers. Whether, too,
they have made that contribution openly and on their own account,
or whether they have used their sometimes subordinate position in
society to engineer it by more subtle means. This book serves to stress
this contribution, sometimes merely to remind the reader of it and October 2010
