INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

In a restaurant, for customers to get a better seat and to have a peaceful satisfying

ingest, reservation is a must. It is also to capture the moments perfectly and hassle free.

Everything you want to be ravish cannot be done spontaneously. ”Reservation”, an

arrangement whereby something, especially a seat or a room, is booked or reserved for a

particular person. On top of this, this study found the perfect way to ease the hassle of

waiting using technology.

Since restaurant business is one of the most propitious and lucrative which that is

rapidly developing and adapting to the requirements of our modern lifestyle, this is why

there is a great need for quality software to improve the efficiency of restaurant staffs and

managers,. thusAnd delivering value for customers has become a central theme in business.

Online rReservation has important effects on business operations, it make sure all

iInformation is more secure, reliance and accessible. The role of technology in business

caused growth in trade.

To promote its services, each restaurants needs to maintain the record of guests and

reserved seats beforehand. The reservation system comes into action once a request for

reservation comes to it. It can be a direct query from the guest. Customers should be able

to know the availability of the seats on a particular date. They should be able to reserve the

available seats according to their needs in advance. Upon observing these problems, the

proponents will design ed and developed an Online Information and Reservation System

for restaurants.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

For years, having a queue outside has been the mark of a successful and busy food

establishment,. bBut this does not necessarily mean that all of them can be entertained well.

Most of the time, this results to disgruntled customers . aAnd a disgruntled customer is a

mark of poor management. It is essential to properly manage the queue of customers

waiting to be seated.

When there is a long queue outside with no predictability of the wait-time, chances

are the customers would end up going to your competition, thus, hurting your business.

Many people think that the amount of people leaving the establishment due to this problem

is insignificant compared to those that stays and eats at food establishments. At first glance

this may seem true, but when you think about it, these problems leave a mark on people’s

minds that make them unconsciously avoid this establishments. People have dialed to

notice but this makes up most of the loss a company.

Another problem in the food service industry is not realizing efficiencies that would

result for better applications of technology in their daily operations. Every food

establishment has a counter where you can place an order then make a payment. Food

establishments also need an employee for taking the order and processing the payment.

But what if you are not available to go to the food establishment to make a reservation and

pre-order the menu, what then? What can be your alternative for making a reservation

without going directly to the food establishment?

OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY

Thise project aims to will develop an ONLINE WEB-BASED RESERVATION

AND BILLING SYSTEM FOR FOOD OUTLETS that can be used by anyone in the

Philippines.

Specifically, this the project aims to:

1. To design a reservation system that has the following features:

a. It will have a reservation for the desired date and time.

b. It will have an ordering system that and it can be accessed by customers if the

customer desires

s to make an advance order.

c. obtain It will fetch the customer’s basic information and other contact details

for the verification

process of the reservation.

2. To create the project using HTML5, CCS3, JQuery (powered AJAX and JSON) as frontend

and using JQuery (powered AJAX and JSON), PHP, MySQL as backend. It will run on

computers PC, laptopsLaptop, sSmartphone devices/platform.

3. To test and improve the developed system using unit testing integration testing, system

testing and acceptance testing.

4. To evaluate the performance of the system and measure it based on the following criteria

(refer to ISO 9126 standards for software development, other standardized criteria applies base

on the type of the proposed system), to wit:

a. functionality;

b. reliability;

c. usability;

d. efficiency;

e. maintainability;

f. portability;
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The outcome of the study will be beneficial to the following entities:

Food Establishment establishments/ Food Company. The proposed system, once

implemented, will able to help boost the sales of ticket and will increase revenues, due to

improved services, and not only that, the food establishment that will use the system can

compete with other companies in terms of the services.

Customers. The proposed system will be able to minimize the time and effort that

it takes to order or to reserve a room. They will experience hassle free and lesser time in

getting a reserve rooms and taking orders.

Crews. The crews will experience hassle free and lesser time in ushering

customers.

Researchers. The proposed system is beneficial to the researcher by gaining more

programming knowledge and logical stimulation and knowing how to eliminate certain

problems. They will utilize not only their skills in programming, but will also have to

ensure and be sure that their program will be of greater help and will meet the entire user’s

need.
Future Researcher/s. The proposed system will benefit the future researcher/s as

guide or reference in their own efforts at any proposal or project. The researchers will

enhance their analysis, knowledge and logical stimulation.

SCOPE AND DELIMITATION OF THE STUDY

The target user of the online reservation and billing system will be the customers

and restaurants. It will provide online reservations for rooms and billing system for the

payment in a particular food establishment. The customer has to pay for a reservation fee

so that no financial damage would be sustained in the instance that a customer makes a

reservation for a specific food area, but doesn’t appear on his/her desired reservation time.
The online reservation and billing system will not be responsible for the reservation

fees of the restaurants and food dining areas that will use this online reservation system.

The reservation fees would be directly controlled by the management of those said

restaurants and food dining areas. If the customer is a fast-paying client or frequent/loyal

customer, the rewards or perks associated with it wouldn’t be the responsibility of the

system.

The system will be using Hypertext Markup Language (HTML), PHP Hypertext

Preprocessor (PHP), Structure Query Language (SQL), and Cascading Style Sheet (CSS).

CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter presents studies and literature from local and foreign origin that are relevant

to online reservation system that the proponents are currently developing. These reading materials

will serve as reference and a guide for the proponents to use in order to develop and further improve

their proposed system more effectively. The contents of this chapter are divided into the following

sections: (a) Review of Related Literature, with subsections (i) Foreign Literature, (ii) Local

Literature, (b) Review of Related Studies, with subsections (i) Foreign Studies, (ii) Local Studies,

(c) Synthesis, and lastly (d) Conceptual Framework of the Study.

Related Literature

Time management

According to Fleming (2011), an effective time management is closely associated with an

understanding the difference between efficiency and effectiveness. Fleming (2011) clarifies that

while efficiency involves completing specified tasks in a right manner, effectiveness relates to

identifying the right tasks to be accomplished in the first place.

A similar viewpoint is expressed by Fleming (2011) as well, who argues that the practice

of identification of strategic tasks in an appropriate manner, and determination of proper

instruments and procedures for the completion of those tasks can be considered the most basic

conditions of effective time management. For instance it has been stated that “when we manage

our time more effectively and efficiently, we reduce stress and frustration, we become more

confident, and we feel better”.

We researchers must ensure that our proposed system provide features that will make

customers lessen their stress and frustration in waiting their turn on a fully booked

establishment and manage their time on other plan on that day.

Content management system

A web content management system (WCMS) is a software system which provides

website authoring, collaboration and administration tools designed to allow users with little

knowledge of web programming languages or markup languages to create and manage the

site’s content with relative ease. Most systems use a database to store content, metadata, or artifacts

that might be needed by the system. A presentation layer displays the content to Web-site visitors

based on a set of templates. Most systems use server side caching to improve performance. This

works best when the WCMS is not changed often but visits happen on a regular basis.

Administration is typically done through browser-based interfaces. Unlike Web-site builders, a

WCMS allows non-technical users to make changes to a website with little training. A WCMS

typically requires an experienced coder to set up and add features, but is primarily a Web-site

maintenance tool for non-technical administrators. A WCMS is a software system used to control

a dynamic collection of Web material

Anxiety and time pressure

A study was conducted to investigate the relationship between test anxiety and time
pressure as prediction on a performance task. It has been showed that high-test anxiety and time
pressure can have an effect on a cognitive task performance. 32 undergraduate students at Western
University College were given a math task and the Test Anxiety Scale and classified as having low
or high-test anxiety by a median split. Subjects in the time pressure conditioned were told they
only had a limited amount of time to complete the task and were constantly reminded of this time
pressure. Subjects in the non-timed pressure condition were given as much time as they needed to
complete the task. Task performance was measured by number of correctly completed items on a
12-item math task. A 2x2 between subjects ANOVA was performed and a significant main effect
of test anxiety was found but an insignificant main effect for time pressure was found.
As a conclusion, our system will develop an online reservation sits and provides a user-
friendly apparatus to lessen the anxiety and time pressure of the customer in waiting in line for
available seaits .

Effectiveness color for business

When it comes to designing your business logo, it i’s important to be conscientious about
what colors you choose to go with. Certain colors can increase your sales, whereas some can have
a negative impact on your business. Color greatly affects human emotion and – as a result – human
behavior.
Understanding the basics of color psychology, especially how color affects the minds of
consumers, will help you design a logo that will maximize your business’ potential.

Red: Powerful, but Aggressive.

Red reduces analytical thinking. It gives a short burst of energy, increases heart rate, and
raises blood pressure. That energy is short-lived, though, since red cuts down on analytical
thinking. There have been studies conducted that show competitors in tournaments (such as
athletes) are more likely to lose to opponents that are wearing red. Students exposed to the color
before a test perform worse than when they were not.
Since red is often considered the color of passion, it denotes power and strength. Used in
small amounts, it can draw the eye in and catch consumer attention. Too much red is off-putting,
however, since it’s considered quite assaulting. Find a happy medium, and it could be quite
effective.
Red is best for food companies, since it stimulates the appetite. This is why many
restaurants and eateries use red inside their establishments.
Orange: The Color of Sales.
Orange gives the impression of affordability, depending on the shade and how it’s used
with other colors. Too much of it suggests your products or services are cheap. Using it in small
amounts evokes feelings of optimism, sales, and energy.
If your business relies heavily on social communication, this would be a good choice. For
this reason, many hotels use orange.
Orange is a great color for eateries, since it stimulates both appetite and conversation. This
means patrons will spend more time in the establishment, and will end up eating more.
As a conclusion, the UI of our system will be using fun & lively color base on the research
Effectiveness color for business and we determined that the effective colors are red to stimulates
the appetite of the customers and orange for both appetite and communication.

Related Studies

Louw (2006) developed Hotel Reservation System or HRS which allows clients to book a

reservation online by themselves. Some of the tasks that the system can do are providing a query

for arriving date and the length of stay, presenting the number of all available rooms and providing

clients the ability to choose one or more rooms, documenting the number of rooms available and

occupied for the hoteliers to easily see, storing the clients’ details like name, address, and telephone

and how many are going to be in a specific room, providing the cost of booking, asking the clients

for optional additional services, such as breakfast or dinner, and final confirmation views with the
detail of booking so the clients can review or cancel the booking. Through this, the proponents’

system allows the clients to do their booking online and make transactions by themselves. The

proponents’ system also provides a query for arrival and departure date, which shows all the rooms

and lets clients choose the kind of accommodation they would like to add during their stay. While

Louw’s system includes additional services, such as breakfast or dinner, the proponents’ system

only includes one additional service almost similar to the Louw’s system; an ordering system after

a reservation were made.

Lagman D, (September 2012), Lan-Based Reservation System for Hacienda Gracia Resort

and Hotel. A resort is a place used for relaxation or recreation The researchers introduce a “LAN-

Based Reservation with Billing System for Hacienda Gracia Resort and Hotel” to improve its

reservation and billing system. The advent of new technology gave rise to easy and hassle-free

interaction between and among humans. This is why most hotel and resorts prefer to employ

computerization in their business.

Base on the proponent’s observation their system is a lan-based system so they generate

their system an online system for some to organize and developed system is appeared to be more

attractive, efficient and dynamic.

Sorting
Sorting is one of the most common operations in computing, it has been characterized as
an activity which involves rearrangement of elements in either ascending or descending order.
There are many sorting algorithms that have been proposed over the years, but this study focused
on improvement of bubble sort algorithm. A new technique that enhanced files sorting has been
proposed, structured system analysis and design was used for design and C++ platform with
window 7 operating system were used for implementation of the prototype. The proposed
technique, compared with the existing bubble sort, revealed 40% improvement in the time
complexity of the sort algorithms. It's recommended that the technique should be deployed online
for web-based files management.
As a conclusion, sorting by category will help us to be organized as well, the consumers
will have a guide when placing a reservation, be able to see the pricing list accordingly; from low
to high price menus, accommodation, other fees and time availability. It has also a category where
they will see our social media accounts and other contact information.

Ads
Several studies have reported that consumers despise advertisements, especially those that
pop up or under a site, and sometimes feel “violated” and “molested” by their presence (Wegert,
2002). Ad intrusiveness has been recognized as a leading cause of annoyance (Bauer & Greyser,
1968). Although Rust and Varki (1999) predicted ads in new media to be less intrusive, Li et al.
(2002) report that online consumers are goal-oriented and perceive online ads as even more
intrusive than those in other media, leading to negative attitudes, and impairing intentions to return
to the site. In this research, we (1) examine the effects of online advertising,
(2) investigate whether the particular type of ad affects consumers’ levels of retention of website
and ad content and consumers’ perceived intrusiveness of the ad, and (3) look at whether the
congruence of ad content (with the hosting site) affects these same variables.

E-Restaurant: Online Restaurant Management System for Android

This study includes e-Menu that provides additional information about menu items and

drinks than a traditional paper menu. With interactive pictures it gives additional information about

the food item. Tablets are said to eliminate order-taking errors from the waiters. In the kitchen,

there is less confusion as everything is now written clearly. Due to an environment of the building

automation in menu display system every order is associated with an individual seat at the table,

and orders are built one customer at a time, just like on paper, but with greater accuracy. Items can

also easily be shared by the whole table, moved or modified, and noted and the cost can be

calculated in real time. The Recommendation algorithm suggests dishes to the patrons .
based on previous orders; iIt makes it easier for the client to build his/her order and

furthermore see the most popular dishes. Moreover, various dimension filters can be used

according to individual preferences e.g. Price, taste, quantity, etc. In addition, this helps us in

reducing running cost, enhancing service quality as well as the relationship with the customers.

To fulfill the objectives of the proposed idea, tThe survey result was encouraging. In addition,

extensive interviews with restaurant owners were conducted and the results indicated that the

proposed system is useful in reducing running cost, enhancing service quality as well as customer

relationship. Payment can be amongst others by paymaya, credit cardsPaymaya

Law, R., & Leung, R. (2000). A Study of Airlines’ Online Reservation Services on the
Internet. Journal of Travel Research
According to Law, R., & Leung, R. (2000) Currently, airlines are using the Internet as an

information dissemination and revenue-generating channel (Connoly, Olsen, & and Moore 1998).

Samenfink (1999); and Theobald & and Dunsmore (2000) commented that many people access

the Internet to get flight information. Similarly, Diefenbach (1998) argued that online reservation

services have changed the way travelers book their car rentals and hotel rooms, as well as

reservations for flights. Rather than heading to the nearest travel agency, travelers can visit one of

the many Web sites and complete the reservation tasks from the travelers’ homes or offices. The

Internet shops stay open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and allow users to access the relevant

information whenever and wherever the users want. Also, the Internet welcomes customers from

all over the world without physical and geographical barriers. As a result, airlines have been

investing resources in their Web sites. Standing (2000) claimed that the Web has changed from
pushing firms and services to pulling clients into value-added opportunities that a company

provides. This section briefly examines the Web online reservation services provided by airline

companies.

Based on the proponent’s observation, time has become an important factor this days considering

going to travel agencies on a traffic, bad weather et al. online reservation services have changed

the way of systems work

Airlines do not only compete among each other, they also compete with online travel agents

such as Travelocity (supported by SABRE) and Expedia (supported by Microsoft). An essential

factor that attracts travelers to purchase air tickets directly from an online reservation system would

be the efficiency in terms of processing time. In the 1990s, with the change in lifestyles and

priorities, time has become an important factor. This has led to increased service expectations of a

different nature, wherein speed is increasingly important (Sheldon, 1997). Standing (2000)

commented that consumers and the law of consumerism would quickly determine which provider

does business most briskly, safely, and conveniently. The most common complaint about the Web

is the lengthy time needed to load the pages with lots of graphical images. (Taylor 1999). Although

catchy graphics aim to make a Web page more attractive and draw the viewers’ interest, many

graphical images appeared to have the opposite effect. For every 10 seconds it takes for the

graphics to be loaded before the complete Web page contents can be seen, there is a risk of losing

20% of the viewers (Taylor, 1999). So Web website architects should attempt to abstain from

putting overwhelming substance home page and should keep the home page simple.

Hotel Swiss-Garden Kuala Lumpur (2008) A online reservation system that provides

hotel information and online room reservation. The layout of this online system is clear and user-
friendly. Guest can browse through the website to get the information easily. The content of the

website is up-to-date, with no grammatical or spelling mistakes. The online system of Swiss-

Garden is fully organized by its developer. The content of this system will need the website

designer to update. As online reservation system is part of the hotel’s property, hotel staff should

have the authority to handle the online system. There should be a way for them to update the

information themselves, without refer to the website designer. The online system should provide

contact information to allow quest to contact if they have any questions or comments. It is

important to listen to the feedback from them, in order to enhance the quality of hotel’s services.

As conclusion, good characteristic of this online system is applied in the developed to

enables staff to organize their online reservation system. The developed system is appeared to be

more attractive, efficient and dynamic.

Catalogue Horse21. (20l3), an online hotel Catalogue in Philippine. The online system did

not provide an instant booking system. Guests will have to wait for confirmation within 24 hours

after their booking. To enhance the current system, system is developed to enables guest have

availability checks and instant confirmation of the booking. The purpose of this feature is to save

valuable time and to cut cost, as it will eliminate email exchanges between guests and reservation

department. Valuable reservations staff time is saved because reservation requests will no longer

have to be processed.

Based on the proponent’s observation, their system lack the capabilities of instant booking for the

room and meals. There should be a ‘Admin workroom’ for them to control the content of the portal.

This si to help hotel in better management of their reservation

The Theodore Hotel Provides Hassle-Free Online Reservation System
The Theodore Hotel has a new addition of a direct reservation system to its online services,

making it easy for the guests to book accommodation within minutes. Visitors can access Tagaytay

Hotel’s website (www.thetheodorehotel.com) to view the availability of every type of rooms

together with its rates and features before indicating their choice of room and the duration of their

stay. A 10% advance payment with the use of credit card is utilize for a secure transaction and

automatically sends confirmation of bookings via email. This innovate way of reserving

accommodation saves time and energy that guests would normally spend using more traditional

means of booking rooms at the hotel. (Pelayo, 2014).

As a conclusion,Based on the proponent’s observation, that the Theodore Hotel equipped

itself with an online reservation system that can help them promote their services, and at the same

time help their customers lessen the time they spend booking rooms at their hotel and a more

secured way of billing system.. The proponents will design a system that can help the system to

promote their offered services.

According to Wardell (2012) the lodging industry is the least facilitated part of

international travel industry in which reservations are either done manually or done so primitively

that it often results in various problems. This old-fashioned way or bookkeeping is a significant

factor that affects a company negatively, as opposed to other competitions in the same industry

wherein modernization and extensive features are often prioritized. In addition, a successful

reservation system requires a database inventory system that when processed, a message is
transmitted to the property in question with information that the local guest info database should

be updated. The study of David Wardell helped the proponents know the current trend in online

reservations system. The proponent’s system provides a well-organized and secure database so

that it can give clients an easy way to create reservations. The clients will also know about the

details beforehand since the system will have a product viewer, game viewer that gives the clients

and customers information about the availability of each products, games and other amenities. This

will not only help the guests save time and effort but also the company too.

Bituin Abi, (August 2010), 658 Apartelle Online Reservation System. Short term base

lodging is the main reason that a hotel has been established. In the Philippines, wherein many

foreign people go and have a vacation, hotel is always their first destination to have relaxation

after long hours of travel in an airplane. Because of the rapid increase of foreigners visiting the

Philippines for a vacation, a common sight is the establishments ad sophisticated hotels for

competitive advantage.

As the result of the competition between different hotels, various business strategies had

been made to attract customers, such as putting discounts, having beautiful and relaxing

environment and above all having a state of the art computer system and facilities. The current

problem observed is the manual guest list records, the manual reservation of guests, the manual

booking of rooms for the guests which takes a long time to accomplish.

According to the manager in the establishment, because they keep on doing their job

manually, it resulted to a very messy office, lots of papers around the desks and sometimes

important documents disappear. From the information gathered, the proponents came up with an
idea of proposing a system that is relevant to the needs of the establishment, highly efficient to

meet their needs and most of all simple, easy to use system.

In another study, Fernandez and Yuan (1999) focused on the pattern for making hotel

reservations in their study by going through the problem, then solution, requirements, and

consequences. The problem that the authors have stated is that a client needs to book a specific

item or more in the hotel. These items will be recorded as reserved for the client and can be reused

throughout his or her stay at the hotel, as well as having an implied responsibility or contract

wherein the client is solely responsible for returning the item in however condition he/she got

them. At the solution, the authors discussed the use case for their realization, which are: make

reservations, use reserved goods, modify reservations, cancel reservations. Notably, this system

records the history of reservation. This system is similar to the proponents’ system in making

reservations and providing history but differs in its environment. The authors’ system is an online

system wherein the guests are the ones who are responsible for their reservations, similar to the

proponents’ system. The proponents’ system would have its own Content Management System

(CMS) module within it, so that the contents of the system (advertisements, price changes, and

listings of all reservations) would be easily managed by the client (the business management of

the food, cafes, and such).

The 658 Apartelle Online Reservation Management System is not only a database for guest

list but also an online reservation system, where potential guest can have online reservation which

will automatically be sent to the database of the 658 Apartelle.

Based on the proponent’s observation and interview, they have found many problems such as time

consuming logging of the guest list names to the log book, difficulties in making reservations and

difficulties in retrieving information on their previous guests because of the papers that are

scattered everywhere and misplacing of the guestless records.

As a conclusion, this system is similar to our system in the solution on that going to provide

to the user. Such as finding a room for a guest, and receive service.

According to Kim and Kim (2004), A study is conducted to find if online reservations for

a hotel were affected by purchaser’s demographics. Their study concluded that no demographic

information was significant with online purchasers and off line purchasers. However those that

chose to use the internet for reservations concluded that six factors affect why they choose to

continue to use the internet for booking reservations: 1. Convenience, 2. Ease of information

search, 3. Transaction (ease of understanding policies and placing orders), 4. Information

credibility 5. Price and 6. Safety (ease of canceling and security of sensitive information (Kim &

Kim 2004). Those that booked reservations offline concluded that convenience, price and safety

were the significant factors affecting their decision to book a reservation via another offline

method.

Marketers want to figure out how to get into the purchaser’s consideration set; therefore,

they must be visible in the purchaser’s initial information search and get him or her thinking

about the product, in this case the restaurant (Solomon 2009). There has been minimal research

done on the decision making model for choosing a restaurant and how the person makes a

reservation. In addition, a reservation for a restaurant differs because in most cases no money or

credit card information is ever exchanged prior to the guest showing up at the front door. Also,
hotels and other purchases have a set rate that one can except to pay when the reservation is

made, but at the restaurant every patron makes different decisions about what he or she is willing

to spend. As the restaurant owner, without information from a guest’s previous visit, one will

never know what the guest is willing to spend prior to walking in the door.

SYNTHESIS

Based on the gathered data from related literature and related studies, it is concluded that

every system has its strengths and weakness. The purpose of those online reservation systems is

basically the same, which enables thefor customers to make online reservationreservation on from

the restaurants. Moreover Anyway, some systems provide other useful functions for visitors in

addition to online reservation. Thus, the online reservation system is hoped to provide useful
information. A new feature is added into the develop system after studied other online system. The

feature is to provide a ‘CMS (Content Management System)’ to manage the reservation of rooms,

order for the food, and payment for the fee of the rooms and foods. There is also a feature for

customer to refer the time and date of their scheduled reservation. The system that will be

developed, developed system not only includes the existing functions of an online reservation

system, but also adds added in more features to enhance its functionality.
