VERBAL & NON VERBAL COMMUNICATION

Verbal Communication:

The basis of communication is the interaction between people. Verbal

communication is one way for people to communicate face-to-face. Some of the
key components of verbal communication are sound, words, speaking, and
language. At birth, most people have vocal cords, which produce sounds. As a
child grows it learns how to form these sounds into words. Some words may be
imitative of natural sounds, but others may come from expressions of emotion,
such as laughter or crying. Words alone have no meaning. Only people can put
meaning into words. As meaning is assigned to words, language develops, which
leads to the development of speaking.

Forms Of Verbal Communication:

Verbal Communication are of 2 forms, namely,

1. Oral
2. Written

Types Of Oral Verbal Communication:

Face to face discussions, speeches, television, radio, telephone conversations,

seminars, videos etc.

Types Of Written Verbal Communication:

Written includes emails, books, letters, magazines, newspapers, notes, faxes,

announcements, commercials etc.

Advantages Of Verbal Communication:

1. No use of technology to interact that would waste natural resources.

2. It is the fastest way of interaction with each other.

3

3. It is less expensive to interact with people.

4. You can have long conversations. And does not require lots of repetitions.
Because it is clear.

Disadvantage Of Communication:

1. It can be quickly forgotten.

2. You can not provide legal evidence.

3. Sometimes, you can not remember each and every point.

4. Poor presentation of the message or the instruction can result in

misunderstanding and wrong responses.

Non-Verbal Communication:

Nonverbal communication (NVC) is usually understood as the process of

communication through sending and receiving wordless messages. I.e., language is
not the only source of communication, there are other means also. NVC can be
communicated through gestures and touch (Haptic communication), by body
language or posture, by facial expression and eye contact. NVC can be
communicated through object communication such as clothing, hairstyles or even
architecture & symbols.

Forms Of Non-Verbal Communication:

Non Verbal Communication are of 2 types, namely,

1. Oral
2. Written

Types Of Oral Non-Verbal Communication:

Facial Expressions:

A smile, frown, raised eyebrow, yawn, and sneer all convey information. Facial
expressions continually change during interaction and are monitored constantly by
4

the recipient. There is evidence that the meaning of these expressions may be
similar across cultures.

Gestures:

One of the most frequently observed, but least understood, cues is a hand
movement. Most people use hand movements regularly when talking.

Posture:

Obviously one can be lying down, seated, or standing. These are not the elements
of posture that convey messages. Are we slouched or erect ? Are our legs crossed
or our arms folded ? Such postures convey a degree of formality and the degree of
relaxation in the communication exchange.

Eye Contact:

Eye contact is a direct and powerful form of non-verbal communication. The

superior in the organization generally maintains eye contact longer than the
subordinate.

Paralanguage:

Is the content of your message contradicted by the attitude with which you are
communicating it? Researchers have found that the tone, pitch, quality of voice,
and rate of speaking convey emotions that can be accurately judged regardless of
the content of the message.

Types Of Written Non-Verbal Communication:

Signs:

Signs may include traffic signs or some other signs that are used to communicate
some message to the people.

Colors:

We know that each color communicate some meaning like red color is a sign of
danger while white color is a sign of peace. So when these colors are combined to
5

deliver some sort of message then this is a non-verbal types of communication. For
example paintings etc.

Logos:

Logos mean a sign or medium that represents or indicate an organization without

the use of any wordings.

Advantages Of Non-Verbal Communication:

1. You can communicate with someone who is hard of hearing.

2. You can communicate at place where you are supposed to maintain silence.

3. You can communicate something which you don't want others to hear or
listen to.

4. You can communicate if you are far away from a person.

5. Can create an impression upon people/listeners.

6. Use to communicate with people who don't understand your language.

7. Non-verbal communication makes conversation short and brief.

Disadvantages Of Non-Verbal Communication:

1. You can not have long conversation.

2. Difficult to understand and requires a lot of repetitions.

3. Cannot be used everywhere.

4. Not everybody prefers to communicate through non-verbal communication.

5. Is open to multiple interpretations -- easy to misread.
