9. Work Procedure

The construction of the secant bored piles are critical along the whole stretch of structure whereby
there is a possibility of an existence of underground rock layer that might hinder to the boring
works. This method statement was prepared for the implementation of the typical piling works
using BG method on soft layer and using Reverse circulation drilling method on the hard/rock
geological formation.

The basic concept of BG is to apply a drilling technique wherein the outer casing advances
through the rock layer by reverse circular drilling method. Hammering action at the bit is
triggered by a compressed air which is use as a medium to wash out the cuttings. Upon reaching
the required penetration length; the borehole is eventually casted by either concrete or reinforced
concrete depending on the type of SBP (primary or secondary) being considered. The process is
then repeated until it formed continuous bored pile columns for the purpose of earth retaining
structure during the cut and cover tunnel excavation works.

Aside from BG ’s, auger drill machine and other conventional type of boring machine, Rotator
and Oscillator adopted in assistance casing installation into hard/rock formation.

9.1 Piling to be carried out by competent person

Piling works will be carried out by a trained operators, site supervisors, and foreman who
are well experienced with piling works.

Foreman or workers directly involved in the maintenance work at heights will be provided
with Fall Protection Equipment (fall arrester, full body harness) and should possess a valid
Work at Height certification.

9.2 Construction of concrete guide wall

Prior to the construction of the Secant Bored Pile (SBP), a reinforced concrete guide wall.

The concrete guide wall will form a template for the layout of the secant pile wall and ensur
e the accurate positioning of the primary and secondary piles in order to achieve the require
d interlocking of the piles.

The concrete guide wall is to be constructed accurately in line and level. All setting out will
be checked and verified by maincon surveyor to ensure correct position.

9.3 Formation of Secant Bored Pile

9.3.1 Primary Pile (Soft Pile without reinforcement cage)

The surveyor will set a reference level prior to commencement of work to determine and
measure the toe level of the pile.

Surveyor to peg the center point of primary or secondary pile.

Using upper and lower auger, temporary casing will be driven until the top of rock head.
Steel casing more than 12m shall be joined using welding.

Drilling/hammering of primary (as well as secondary) bored pile as per required

penetration length.

The verticality can be check with the following method:

 Using automatic plumb system installed at the drilling machine.

 Using two plumb bob hanged into a stand approx. 20 ~ 30 meters away, plumb the
vertical face of the steel casing with that of the plumb bob. Hand signal will be used as
a means of communication.

remedial or compensating action must be proposed for approval.

11.3 Pile Excavation

Pile size and length

Probing of bedrock shall be carried out along the proposed wall line at intervals.

Boring near recently cast piles

Piles shall not be bored next to the other piles which recently been cast less than 24 hours
or contain unset concrete, whichever longer to avoid damaged to any of these piles.

Stability of borehole

A temporary casing shall be provided for boreholes with a presence of ground water to
prevent loose materials to fall into the bottom of the borehole. The casing shall be install
until the top of hard strata to prevent the inflow of soil and the formation of cavities in the
surrounding ground.

The center to center distance for bored pile produced with a time difference of 4 hours
should be at least four times diameter or width with a minimum of 2 meters.

Pile excavated shall be cast within 24 hours unless otherwise agreed. If the bored piles are
constructed in ground in which is likely to deteriorate with time and it’s not possible to
finish the bored pile by the end of the working day, a depth equivalent to at least twice the
shaft diameter but not less than 1.5m

Inspection

Where applicable, all pile excavations shall be inspected for their full length before
concreting. Inspection shall be carried out either from the ground or below ground level at

the sole discretion of the engineer.

11.4 Placement of Reinforcement

Concrete spacer shall be provided at every 3m interval, size and minimum yield strength
shall be as specified on the drawing.

To maintain the concrete cover of SBP, during installation of rebar cages concrete cover
shall be made up of concrete block instead of the typical plastic made.

The minimum concrete cover to all reinforcement shall not be less than 75mm unless
stated otherwise.

The longitudinal reinforcing bars in piles not exceeding 12 meters in length shall be in
one continuous length unless otherwise specified.

It is noted that reinforcement for the hard piles are not symmetrical, hence it is necessary
that lowering of the reinforcement cage is in the correct orientation. Markings shall be
provided so that the site personnel will be aware of the proper rebar cage positioning. On
the other hand, strict compliance to the approved shop drawings with respect to its
lapping requirement shall be adopted to ensure that the rebar cages are joined at the
correct level.

Notes on Rebar Cage Installation:-

1. Once the final toe level is confirmed, prepare rebar cages in accordance with the design
length requirement. Measure and clearly mark the total length requirement for each rebar
cage on the main bar where hanging bars are to be located. Demarcate lapping lengths with
respect to the previous markings.

2. Provide PE endorsed design calculations on the proposed hanging bars (lifting hooks),
lapping details, hanging plates, stopper plates, etc. deemed necessary to make certain that
they are “safe to use”.

3. Follow installation details for hanging bars (lifting plate), rebar cage hanging arrangement
with stopper plates and rebar cage lapping.

4. Surveyor to set out reference and offset points for monitoring the rebar cage movement after
the removal of steel casing. Monitoring of rebar cage relative movement shall be done
during the initial stage and will be adjusted accordingly as soon as allowable tolerance was
established.

Also, we propose to install additional main bar (same as shown on the design) on the single
main bar side in order to prevent grave consequences in case an excessive rotation of rebar
cage occur. This will be monitored during initial stage of SBP work and will also be
adjusted accordingly as soon as allowable tolerance was established.

Proposed measures to ensure proper placement of rebar cages:-

1. Generally setting out of bored pile center lines will be carried out by Dongah surveyor in
accordance with the design drawing and specifications.

2. Matching reference point at rebar cages will also be located and clearly marked for
monitoring purposes. This will be matched to the reference/offset point installed at guide
wall for proper rebar cage orientation.

3. During the initial stage of SBP works, we proposed to install additional main bars (to
match with the design) in order to make the rebar cages symmetrical thus avoiding the
grave consequences in case an excessive rotation of rebar does occur.

4. Pattern of rotation will be recorded and verified and shall be adjusted accordingly as soon
as soon as allowable tolerance was established.

11.5 Concreting in wet hole

A tremie concrete pipe shall be use and shall consist of a series of metal pipes with
internal diameter not less than 250mm.

The tremie outlet shall be kept at least 1.5 meters below the surface of the concrete at all
stages in the pour.

Temporary casings shall be extracted in not more than 2 hours after concreting has
completed.

11.6 Drilling fluids (if necessary) and soil tests

Steel casing installed until rock layer will be provided in lieu of the drilling fluid.
.
11.7 Dry hole construction (If directed by engineer only)

Whenever practicable, concrete bored piles may be placed into a clean dry hole. All dry holes
shall be inspected and approved prior to placing of concrete. The concrete shall be placed by
tremie. The free fall of the concrete from the bottom of the tube shall not exceed 1.5 times the
diameter of the pile. The concrete shall be placed as quickly as possible where the ground is
liable to deteriorate on exposure.

11.8 Casting level

Concrete shall be finished not less than 600mm above the cut-off level (overcast) to ensure
that all concrete at and below the cut-off level is homogeneous and free of laitance and
deleterious matter.

11.9 Concrete Cover

Unless otherwise noted, all concrete cover for SBP works shall be 75mm. Concrete spacer
shall be provided at a vertical distance of not more than 3.0m to ensure enough concrete
cover.
