Computer System Servicing (CSS) NC II

Computer Network – it is a set of computers connected together for the purpose of sharing resources. The most common
resource shared today is the Internet. Other shared resources can include printers and file servers.

Punch Down Tool – also called Impact Tool. It is used in attaching the UTP wire into the insulation-displacement connectors
on the patch panel or network modular.

Active Directory – it is a directory service that Microsoft developed for Windows domain networks. It is a controller that
authenticates and authorizes all users and computers in a windows domain type network assigning and enforcing security
policies.

Domain Name System (DNS) – it is a hierarchical distributed naming system for computer, services or any resource
connected to the internet or a private network.

Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) – it is a standardize network protocol used in the Internet protocol (IP)
networks for dynamically distributing network configuration parameters.

File Service – Provides technologies that help manage storage, perform backup and recovery task, enable file replication,
manage shared folders, ensure fast file searching and enable access for unique client computer.

Server – the main computer in a network which provides files, requests, and services that are used by other computer.

Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) – It is a type of DSL technology, a data communications technology that
enables faster data transmission over copper telephone lines that a conventional voice band modem can provide.

Patch Panel or Jack Field – It is a device or unit featuring a number of jacks, usually for the same or similar type, for the use
of connecting and routing circuits for monitoring, interconnecting, and testing circuits in a convenient, flexible manner.

Switch – it is a rigid, protective enclosure through which electrical and network cables are run.

Access Point (AP) – a device that allows wireless devices to connect to a wired network using WiFi or related standards. The
AP usually connects to a router (via a wired network) as a standalone device, but it can also be an integral component of the
router itself.

Formatting – it is how to prepare the chosen partition on the drive to be used by an operating system by deleting all of the data
and setting up a file system. The most popular file system to support Windows is NTFS but FAT32 is also used occasionally.

Partition – is the logical division of a hard disk created so that you can have different operating systems on the same hard disk
or to create the appearance of having separate hard drives of file management, multiple users, or other purposes. A partition is
created when you format the hard disk.

Installation – it is the act of making a program ready for execution. Because the process varies for each program and each
computer, programs (such as Operating System) often come with an installer, a specialized program responsible for doing
whatever is needed for their for their installation. Installation may be part of a larger software deployment process.

Driver – it acts like a translator between the device and programs that use the device. Each device has its own set of
specialized commands that only its driver knows.

Fragmentation – it is a phenomenon in which storage space is used inefficiently, reducing capacity or performance and often
both.

Defragmentation – the process of reducing the amount of fragmentation. It does this by physically organizing the contents of
the mass storage device used to store files into the smallest number of contiguous regions (fragments).
