1 Heavy Oilfield Winch Prime Mover 6 x4

1.1 Purpose
A) Without a coupled trailer, the prime mover is mainly utilised for pulling rig trailers, i.e.
mast, generator, pump trailer, draw-works trailer and main rig structures etc.
These trailers and structures may weigh anything from 50 ton to 450 ton with sizes up to
15 metres wide and 50 metres long.
The prime movers may be used in conjunction with additional prime movers as ballast
trucks to move the heavier rig equipments within undulating terrain.
The prime movers will also be used to pull various other equipments within the interior, i.e.
float semi trailers, road tanks, lowboys etc.

B) With a coupled heavy oilfield winch trailer, these vehicles are utilised for transporting
skid mounted loads up to 50 ton in weight. These skid loads will vary in size from 13
metres wide to 15 metres long.
The trailers are also used for transporting skid mounted fluid tanks with a maximum
capacity of 32,000 litres.
The trailers are also used for transporting tubulars in various sizes, palletised and un-
palletised chemical loads, 20’ and 40’ ISO containers and general cargo

C) Conditions of this equipment usage vary within the Oman interior. The vehicle will be
required to be able to withstand harsh weather conditions which will include extreme
temperatures, up to and above 55deg, very dusty conditions and harsh graded roads with
loose gravel and or hard bedrock.

Minimum Requirments

1.1.1 Front Steering Axle


Single axle with power steering and single mounted tyres (14.00 x 24)
A turning radius of less than 30 metres from the outside wheel.

1.1.2 Rear Axle


A two axled bogie using walking beam suspension or as a minimum, spring mounted
suspension.
Both axles to be driven, utilising a power divider and a separate differential lock.

1.1.3 Carrying Capacity


The prime mover must have a fifth wheel carrying capacity of 36 tons above the standard
vehicle weight.

1.1.4 Tyres
Minimum requirement of 14.00 x 24 inflated to the correct safe working pressure of 100 psi
as per manufacturer’s recommendations.

A complete spare wheel assembly to be mounted to the prime mover.


Sufficient equipment to carry out a tyre change with the jacking capability to exceed
the total gross weight exerted on the complete axle.

1.1.5 Engine and Transmissions


A minimum of 250 bhp transferred through an automatic or manual gearbox.
Drive train with sufficient power and torque to pull trailerised rig loads of up to 130 tons or a
recommended power output of 450 bhp or above transferred through an automatic or manual
gearbox.
Drive train with sufficient power and torque to pull trailerised rig loads of up to 450 tons on
level graded interior roads.
Lowest gear ratio to be sufficient to enable a maximum gross weight vehicle (50 ton net load)
to negotiate an incline of 12%.
Highest gear ratio to limit the vehicle to 80 kph.

1.1.6 Fifth Wheel Coupling


Standard fitment of 3 ½” fifth wheel coupling to facilitate the standard kingpins on all rig
trailer loads.
Longitudinal rocking motion only. (forward and backward motion)
Centre of fifth wheel to be positioned a minimum of 100mm forward of the centre
position of the front axle of the rear bogie.
Minimum pull capacities of 130 tons on a 16% incline.
Ground height of between 1.55 meters and 1.60 metres.
Minimum distance between the centre of the fifth wheel plate and the prime mover headache
rack is 2.25 metres
The distance between the centre of the fifth wheel plate and the furthest point of the rear of
the prime mover is to be no greater than 2.10 metres.

1.1.7 Tail Roller


Minimum diameter of 210mm.
Length to be determined by the width of the prime mover chassis but usually 300 cm.
Connected to chassis by sufficient load bearing roller bearings.

1.1.8 Skid Ramps


To run flush from the tail roller to the fifth wheel at the same spacing as the chassis.

1.1.9 Towing Hitches


Front towing hitch to be an integral part of the strengthened front bumper being a removable
pin of no less diameter of 46 mm.
Rear towing hitch to be a ‘Rockinger’ type 561 or an equivalent spec hitch with a movable pin
being no less than 46 mm in diameter. This is to be fitted to a strengthened part of the rear
chassis situated no less than 100 cm above the ground and not at any point being able to
interfere with the tail roller.

1.1.10 Prime Mover Winch


Optimum winching capacity of 45 tons.
Mechanical or hydraulically operated.
Winch drum diameter, width and flange height must be sufficient to contain 36 metres of
28mm wire rope, coupled to a 9 metre sling of 28mm.
Minimum drum specifications listed below:-
Width 23”
Diameter 15”
Flange diameter 37”
Winch is to be mounted on a strengthened security cage (headache rack) behind the cab.
A minimum clearance of 6” is required around the winch except the mountings.
An interlock safety device, which prevents the winching operation when the transmission is
engaged, is to be standard.
All winch controls are to be within the drivers cab.

1.1.11 Winch Line


Optimum length of 36 metres.
Nominal Diameter of 28mm.
A wire rope construction of IWRC 6 X 36 WS preformed bright plow steel.
A tail chain to be with a 1 ¼” tail hook attached.

1.1.12 Security Cage (Headache Rack)


A steel tubular construction of 4 ½” heavy wall pipe that envelopes the winch and is mounted
directly and securely to the chassis behind the driver’s cab therefore protecting the winch and
cab.

1.1.13 Braking System


A full dual line air brake system with a ‘fail safe’ system in the event of loss of air pressure.
1 x set of colour coded (red: emergency, yellow: service) palm (glad hand) couplings at the
rear of the cab.
1 x set of colour coded palm couplings near the rear towing hitch.
2 x sets of colour coded dual brake line hoses of 3 metre length with palm coupling.
An audible and visual warning of low pressure situated in the drivers cab.
A spring loaded hand brake.
An engine retarding device (Jake Brake or equivalent) to control the vehicle speed whilst
descending an incline. This device supersedes any other device such as an exhaust brake or
any other device that requires the use of the vehicles wheel braking system.
A device to ensure ‘lock up’ of the transmission during operation of the retarder (automatic
gearboxes only).

1.1.14 Auxiliary Electrical Connections


A 7 pin electrical socket situated near the rear towing hitch.

1 x 5 metre electrical Suzy cable with a 7 pin electrical plug at each end.

1.1.15 General vehicle fitments


A metal grid catwalk behind the driver’s cab, between the headache rack and fifth wheel to
be fitted which must be the whole width of the vehicle.
2 x roof mounted amber rotating warning lights.
An audible reversing warning device.
2 x 9 litre AFFF premix fire extinguishers to be fitted to the side of the vehicle.
2 x brackets for spare dry powder fire extinguishers should the vehicle be carrying hazardous
chemicals.
Minimum of 100 litre potable water tank.
Minimum of 10 litre cold drinking water flask.
A lockable storage container for tyre changing and additional load lashing equipment.

1.1.16 Auxiliary Equipment


Minimum of 4 x 9metre load restraining chains with grab hooks at each end with a diameter
of 13mm.
6 x load binders compatible with the load restraining chains.
Minimum of 5 load restraining webbing belt straps of 8 metres and 4” wide.
1 x 28mm x 9 metre wire rope sling with soft eyes secures with tapered ferrules
2 x ‘D’ shackles with a SWL of 11.5 ton and 44mm pin diameter.
1 x heavy duty cargo net, 18 x 6 metres
Laminated copies of up to date safety certificates of all slings, chains and binders to be kept
in a folder within the drivers cab.

1.1.17 Vehicle Operators Cabin


Radio cassette player
Air conditioning
First aid box
2 x individual seats each fitted with head restraints and ‘3’ point inertia reel type safety belts.
Rear window to be of sufficient size to enable the driver to have clear sight of the winch and
the loads to be winched. The glass is to be of reinforced toughened laminated type.
Controlled discharge type fire extinguisher with minimum capacity of 1.5 litres.
A lockable storage compartment of sufficient size to store the driver and helpers personnel
belongings, rations, maps etc.

1.1.18 Identification
Company fleet numbers to be painted and shown prominently on both the vehicle cab doors
and on each end of the front bumper.
A band of yellow and black chevrons of 15cm height is to be painted across the entire rear
width of the vehicle.

2 Heavy Oilfield Semi Trailer 4 x 0


To be used in combination with a suitable 6 x 4 prime mover.

Porpuse
These trailers are utilised for transporting skid mounted loads up to 50 ton in weight. These
skid loads will vary in size from 13 metres wide to 15 metres long.
The trailers are also used for transporting skid mounted fluid tanks with a maximum capacity
of 32,000 litres.
The trailers are also used for transporting tubular’s in various sizes, palletised and un-
palletised chemical loads, 20’ and 40’ ISO containers and general cargo.
The trailers may also be used for transporting handling equipment and light vehicles.
Conditions of this equipment usage vary within the Oman interior. The vehicle will be
required to be able to withstand harsh weather conditions which will include extreme
temperatures, up to and above 55deg, very dusty conditions and harsh graded roads with
loose gravel and or hard bedrock.

Minimum Requirments

2.1.1 Rear Axle


A two axle bogie pivoting from a main centre axle thus allowing the trailer to be lowered to
the ground with all wheels remaining on the ground.

2.1.2 Tyres
Minimum requirement of 14.00 x 24 inflated to the correct safe working pressure of 100 psi
as per manufacturer’s recommendations.
2 x spare wheel and tyre assemblies to be mounted to the underside of the trailer behind the
landing legs.
Wheel and tyre assemblies must be interchangeable with the prime mover unless different
wheel sizes on the prime mover, then additional spares will need to be carried for the
complete combination.

2.1.3 Load Capacity


Capacity to carry a net weight of 50 tons without overloading any axle capacity.

2.1.4 Flatbed Platform


Width: no less than 3.35 metres; no more than 3.50 metres
Length: an optimum of 12.20 metres
Deck to be longitudinally timbered between the main chassis beams.
Timber used is not to be any less than 50mm thick.
Deck height to be no more than 1.90 metres above ground height.
Trailer deck to have a minimum of 6 side stake holders (internal of deck side rail or welded
external).
Each side stake to be 10cm in diameter and a minimum of 1.50 metres in length.

Deck to be fitted with ISO container locks to facilitate 2 x 20’ or 1 x 40’ ISO container.
Each deck side rail to be fitted with a minimum of 5 lashing belt ratchets. These are to be
fitted to the underside of the side rails and must allow 4’ webbing restraining straps to be
utilised.

2.1.5 Kingpin Assembly


To be a standard size of 3 ½” and conform to SAE J848a spec.
The distance between the centre of the kingpin and the front leading edge of the trailer is to
be a standard of 2.00 metres to allow full swing of the prime mover.

2.1.6 Rear Bumper


A heavy duty bumper to be fitted to the entire width of the rear of the trailer.
A minimum of 2 x runners, inclined at 3degrees of vertical to be fitted enabling correct
smooth winching of skid loads.
A band of yellow and black chevrons of 12cm height is to be painted across the entire rear
width of the vehicle.

2.1.7 Tail Roller


A minimum of 240mm in diameter and a length suitable to fit the entire width of the trailer
with 2 x end roller bearings.
An optimum of 7 x cradle bearings to enable smooth roll of tail roller.
Top of roller to be a minimum of 1” protruding above the rear of the deck.
Front leading edge of the roller to be 1” behind the rear of the deck.
Safety pins to be fitted to the rear side edges of the deck to prevent any skid loads slipping
over the rear side edge of the trailer.

2.1.8 Trailer Nose


A rounded leading front edge allowing wheeled equipment to be loaded on to the trailer when
the front edge is lowered to the ground.
An assembly to be fitted allowing the prime mover winch line and tail hook to be passed
through and connected to the n of the trailer to enable the prime mover to winch the trailer
with a load, not exceeding the winch capacities, to be re-connected to the prime mover.

2.1.9 Landing Gear


Of a collapsible rear swinging type able to be pinned to the underside of the deck enabling
the trailer nose to be lowered completely to the ground.
Sufficiently robust enough to support a fully laden trailer with sufficient ground padding to
enable a disconnected trailer to refrain from sinking in the soft ground in the Oman Interior.
It is to be attached to the trailer in a position that is not affecting the swing of the prime
mover.

2.1.10 Braking System


Full dual line air brake system with ‘fail safe’ mechanism, fully compatible with the prime
mover.

1 x colour coded palm couplings compatible with the prime mover.


Spring loaded or manually operated hand brake or securing device to lock the travelling
wheels when the prime mover is disconnected and uncoupled.

2.1.11 Auxiliary Electrical Connections


Seven pin electrical socket at the trailer neck and an electrical system compatible with the
prime mover.

2.1.12 General
Lockable storage containers attached on the underside of the trailer to store tools, lashings
etc.

2.1.13 Identification
A fleet identification number will be painted on both sides and rear of the trailer.
A band of yellow and black chevrons of 15cm height is to be painted across the entire rear
width of the rear of the trailer.

3 Heavy Oilfield Winch Truck 6 x 4

3.1 Purpose
Handling skid mounted loads weighing up to 40tons with dimensions up to 13 metres wide
and 15 metres long, mostly being used for rig move operations.
Transporting skid mounted loads, handling eqpt on specially manufactured skids, palletised
goods and general cargo.
Conditions of this equipment usage vary within the Oman interior. The vehicle will be
required to be able to withstand harsh weather conditions which will include extreme
temperatures, up to and above 55deg, very dusty conditions and harsh graded roads with
loose gravel and or hard bedrock.

3.2 Minimum Requirments

3.2.1 Front Steering Axle

3.2.5 Flatbed Platform


Width: no less than 3.35 metres; no more than 3.50 metres
Length: an optimum of 7.75 metres
Deck to be longitudinally timbered between the main chassis beams.
Timber used is not to be any less than 50mm thick.
Rear half section of the deck is to be covered in MS steel plate the full width of the vehicle.
The steel deck is to be no less than 13mm.
Deck height to be no more than 1.60 metres above ground height.
Section of rear deck overhanging the rear wheel is to be kept at a minimum.

3.2.6 Rear Skirt


A heavy duty bumper to be fitted to the entire width of the rear of the vehicle.
A minimum of 2 x runners, inclined at 3degrees of vertical to be fitted enabling correct
smooth winching of skid loads.
A band of yellow and black chevrons of 12cm height is to be painted across the entire rear
width of the vehicle.
Apertures shall be in this skirt the correct dimensions for the fitment of rear light clusters, a
towing hitch and 2 x load securing points.

3.2.7 Tail Roller


A minimum of 240mm in diameter and a length suitable to fit the entire width of the vehicle
with 2 x end roller bearings.
An optimum of 7 x cradle bearings to enable smooth roll of tail roller.
Top of roller to be a minimum of 1” protruding above the rear of the deck.
Front leading edge of the roller to be 1” behind the rear of the deck.
Safety pins to be fitted to the rear side edges of the deck to prevent any skid loads slipping
over the rear side edge of the vehicle.

3.2.8 Towing Hitches


Front towing hitch to be an integral part of the strengthened front bumper being a removable
pin of no less diameter of 46 mm.
Rear towing hitch to be a ‘Rockinger’ type 561 or an equivalent spec hitch with a movable pin
being no less than 46 mm in diameter. This is to be fitted to a strengthened part of the rear
chassis situated no less than 100 cm above the ground and not at any point being able to
interfere with the tail roller.

3.2.9 Winch
Optimum winching capacity of 45 tons.
Mechanical or hydraulically operated.
Winch drum diameter, width and flange height must be sufficient to contain 36 metres of
28mm wire rope, coupled to a 9 metre sling of 28mm.

Winch is to be mounted on a strengthened security cage (headache rack) behind the cab.
A minimum clearance of 6” is required around the winch except the mountings.
An interlock safety device, which prevents the winching operation when the transmission is
engaged, is to be standard.

3.2.10 Winch Line


Optimum length of 36 metres.
Nominal Diameter of 28mm.
A wire rope construction of IWRC 6 X 36 WS preformed bright plow steel.
A tail chain to be with a 1 ¼” tail hook attached.

3.2.11 Security Cage (Headache Rack)


A steel tubular construction of 4 ½” heavy wall pipe that envelopes the winch and is mounted
directly and securely to the chassis behind the driver’s cab therefore protecting the winch and
cab.

3.2.12 Braking System


A full dual line air brake system with a ‘fail safe’ system in the event of loss of air pressure.
2 x sets of colour coded dual brake line hoses of 3 metre length with palm coupling.
An audible and visual warning of low pressure situated in the drivers cab.
A spring loaded hand brake.
An engine retarding device (Jake Brake or equivalent) to control the vehicle speed whilst
descending an incline. This device supersedes any other device such as an exhaust brake or
any other device that requires the use of the vehicles wheel braking system.
A device to ensure ‘lock up’ of the transmission during operation of the retarder (automatic
gearboxes only).

3.2.13 Auxiliary Electrical Connections


A 7 pin electrical socket situated near the rear towing hitch.
1 x 5 metre electrical Suzy cable with a 7 pin electrical plug at each end.

3.2.14 General vehicle fitments


A metal grid catwalk behind the driver’s cab, between the headache rack and bed deck to be
fitted which must be the whole width of the vehicle.
2 x roof mounted amber rotating warning lights.
An audible reversing warning device.
2 x 9 litre AFFF premix fire extinguishers to be fitted to the side of the vehicle.
2 x brackets for spare dry powder fire extinguishers should the vehicle be carrying hazardous
chemicals.

Company fleet numbers to be painted and shown prominently on both the vehicle cab doors
and on each end of the front bumper.
A band of yellow and black chevrons of 15cm height is to be painted across the entire rear
width of the vehicle.

4 Standard Oilfield Based Cargo Prime Mover and Trailer


Combination
Describe the steps that must be taken to seek and obtain step-out approval, from the
Document Authority, in the event that circumstances prevent compliance with the
procedure. Step-out approval must clearly specify the duration of the step-out period.
It must also specify the actions to be taken within this timeframe, ensuring compliance
at the end of the step-out period. Step-out approval in the event of an emergency
situation must be included in this process. (A generic Step-Out and Approval
Procedure is available on request from TCD/35).

4.1 Standard Oilfield Based Cargo Prime Mover 6 x 4

4.1.1 Purpose
The prime movers will be used to pull various equipments within the interior, i.e. float
semi trailers, road tanks, lowboys etc.
With a coupled cargo trailer, these vehicles are utilised for transporting
Tubular’s in various sizes, palletised and un-palletised chemical loads, 20’ and 40’ ISO
containers and general cargo
Conditions of this equipment usage vary within the Oman interior. The vehicle will be
required to be able to withstand harsh weather conditions which will include extreme
temperatures, up to and above 55deg, very dusty conditions and harsh graded roads with
loose gravel and or hard bedrock.

4.1.2 Minimum Requirments

4.1.2.1 Front Steering Axle


Single axle with power steering and single mounted tyres (12.00 x 24)
A turning radius of less than 20 metres from the outside wheel.

4.1.2.2 Rear Axle


Two axles using spring mounted suspension.
Both axles to be driven, utilising a power divider and a separate differential lock.

4.1.2.3 Carrying Capacity


The prime mover must have a fifth wheel carrying capacity of 30 tons above the standard
vehicle weight.

4.1.2.4 Tyres
Minimum requirement of 12.00 x 24 inflated to the correct safe working pressure of
100 psi as per manufacturer’s recommendations.

Sufficient equipment to carry out a tyre change with the jacking capability to exceed the total
gross weight exerted on the complete axle

4.1.2.5 Engine and Transmissions


A minimum of 250 bhp transferred through an automatic or manual gearbox.
Drive train with sufficient power and torque to pull trailer loads of up to 40 tons (net) on
‘blacktop’ or interior graded roads
Lowest gear ratio to be sufficient to enable a maximum gross weight vehicle (40 ton net load)
to negotiate an incline of 12%.
Highest gear ratio to limit the vehicle to 100 kph.

4.1.2.6 Fifth Wheel Coupling


Standard fitment of 2 ½” fifth wheel coupling to facilitate the standard kingpins on all cargo
trailers.

4.1.2.7 Braking System


A full dual line air brake system with a ‘fail safe’ system in the event of loss of air pressure.
1 x set of colour coded (red: emergency, yellow: service) palm (glad hand) couplings at the
rear of the cab.
An audible and visual warning of low pressure situated in the drivers cab.
A spring loaded hand brake.

4.1.2.8 Auxiliary Electrical Connections


1 x 5 metre electrical Suzy cable with a 7 pin electrical plug at each end.

4.1.2.9 Auxiliary Equipment


6 x load binders compatible with the same amount of load restraining chains.
Minimum of 5 load restraining webbing belt straps and tensioners.
1 x cargo net, 18 x 6 metres
Laminated copies of up to date safety certificates of all slings, chains and binders to be kept
in a folder within the drivers cab.

4.2 Standard Oilfield Based Cargo Trailer

4.2.1 Purpose
The trailers are also used for transporting tubulars in various sizes, palletised and un-
palletised chemical loads, 20’ and 40’ ISO containers and general cargo.
The trailers may also be used for transporting handling equipment and light vehicles.
Conditions of this equipment usage vary within the Oman interior. The vehicle will be
required to be able to withstand harsh weather conditions which will include extreme
temperatures, up to and above 55deg, very dusty conditions and harsh graded roads with
loose gravel and or hard bedrock.

4.2.2 Minimum Requirements

4.2.2.1 Rear Axle


Two axles using spring mounted suspension, as a minimum.

4.2.2.2 Tyres
Minimum requirement of 12.00 x 24 inflated to the correct safe working pressure of 100 psi
as per manufacturer’s recommendations.
2 x spare wheel and tyre assemblies to be mounted to the underside of the trailer behind the
landing legs.

4.2.2.3 Load Capacity


Capacity to carry a net weight of 40 tons without overloading any axle capacity.

4.2.2.4 Flatbed Platform


Width: no less than 2.50 metres; no more than 3.50 metres
Length: an optimum of 12.20 metres
Deck to be longitudinally timbered between the main chassis beams.
Timber used is not to be any less than 20mm thick.
Deck height to be no more than 1.60 metres above ground height.
Trailer deck to have a minimum of 6 side stake holders (internal of deck side rail or welded
external).
Each side stake to be of 1.50 metres in length.
Deck to be fitted with ISO container locks to facilitate 2 x 20’ or 1 x 40’ ISO container.

4.2.2.5 Kingpin Assembly


To be a standard size of 2 ½” and conform to SAE J848a spec.
