PICTURE ANALYSIS

Objectives:
 To identify the organs of the respiratory system and their function
 To tract the general flow of the blood in the body,

You are given with the following pictures and diagrams. Analyze each by answering the questions below.

Pulse Rate Activity:
Objective:
 To determine the relationship between physical activity and pulse rate

Perform the procedure to determine the relationship between physical activity and pulse rate.
1. Count your pulses for 15 seconds. Multiply this by four to obtain your pulse rate per minute.
(A person’s pulse rate is direct measure of heart rate. Normal resting heart rate of an adult is 60 to 100 beats
per minute.)

You can take your pulse by

pressing two fingers on your
wrist as shown in the picture

2. Do the “jumping jack” activity for 16 counts. Trying taking pulse rate
again.
Count your pulse for 15 seconds and multiply it by 4.
3. Discuss in the group:
a. Did you get the same number of pulse per minute? Why do you
think?
4. What is the relationship between the physical activity and pulse rate?

Article Reading: Blood Doping: An Artificial Method of Increasing Endurance.

A triathlon athlete. A triathlon athlete is a multi-sport endurance competition consisting of swimming, cycling, and
running events in immediate succession over distance.

Aside from training, athletes also perform regular exercises and observe discipline. All these activities help them
gain an edge over competitors. But did you know that some athletes resort to artificial and prohibited methods to
increase their endurance and help them perform better? One such prohibited method is called blood doping. Blood
doping increases amount of oxygen the blood can carry and supply to the body by adding more red blood cells in
the circulatory system. Although blood doping has been documented to really alleviate the performance of athletes,
its benefits far outweigh the risk associated with such method. It can leads to an increased risk of several deadly
diseases, such as heart disease, stroke, and cerebral or pulmonary.
PROBLEMS RELATED TO OVER POPULATION

In relation of population to health, rapid population growth may also result in more health problems. More
children will suffer from malnutrition due to food insecurity, poor caring practices, and inadequate public health
services including water and sanitation. In relation of population to environment, overcrowding often result in
three identified problems. One of these problems is the occurrence of diseases because of the improper disposal
and waste population. Having poor sanitation will result to cause illnesses and disease which can lead to death.
• Can you identify the same problem stated in the article in relation of population to health and relation of
population to environment?
