Current Situation

– Consumption is estimated to be about 700 TMT

Storming Session
• Introduction of soy foods category in the Govt. Gazette
– Currently there is no recognition of soy foods in the GoI schedule,
which makes these products to be considered as other foods. This
attracts high taxes and duties.
• Bringing standards for soy food products
– Suitable legislations and/or to propose amendment in existing law
affecting the Soy Food Trade and Industry
• Working with Department of Food Processing Industries,
GOI to get
– Support for setting up soy food businesses
– Support for EDPs and soy food training
– Support for upgrading soy food industries such as value added
products such as defatted soy flour, soy protein concentrates,
isolates etc
More Recommendations
• Getting Health claim from GOI through Ministry of Health
• Efforts to distribute Soy grits/flour/Dal analogue through PDS
• Fortification wheat flour (10%) and besan (15%) with defatted
soy flour may be recommended
• Concerted efforts from all the stakeholders in conducting
seminars, exhibitions and other promotional activities
• Promotion of soybean utilization by KVK officers at the farmers
level
• Promotion of benefits of soy on the lines of Pulse Polio
Immunization work by health ministry through print and
electronic media
• Support Industry Association in promotion campaign to spread
health benefits of soy food
• Keep taxes on soy product at par with basic food like wheat,
rice, pulses, vegetables, milk, meat, egg
