What is the Next Killer Application
in FPD Industry ?
Recovering from those desperate days in 2009, everyone is looking forward to the resergence of flat panel
display (FPD) industry, and most importantly the new “killer application” that will stimulate demand as
netbook did in 2008. After the miracle created by netbook, what to expect next ?

The PFT Theme Pavilion: A Retrospective of Taiwan Photonics Industry Fig.1ȁPIDA’s theme pavilion is
For decades, the Photonics Festival in Taiwan has been keenly welcomed and supported packed with crowd
by the domestic and foreign photonics manufacturers, making it one of the most important
photonics exhibitions in the Asia Pacific region. This year, in celebration of the 50th
anniversary of the invention of Laser, the organizer PIDA paid tribute to Laser at the theme
pavilion, in which posters showing the development trends and a picture showing Theodore
Maiman, the invention of Ruby laser, visiting Taiwan were displayed. The theme pavilion
let visitors recall Taiwan’s photonics industry in its early stage of and those who contributed
to the establishment of the industry. Furthermore, the winning products from this year’s
Outstanding Photonics Products Award along with various PIDA-compiled statistics about
the photonics industry were also exhibited to reflect the present development here in Taiwan.

LiteOn Technology turned the exhibition pavilion into an education center best of LED pavilion
with technological, futuristic and green environmental features. The portable
mobile lamps, smiling lamps with touch control for image changes and color
lamps with automatic color switch feature were available in the pavilion. These
innovations changed the stereotype of traditional light bulbs. Now, the light
bulbs are not just light bulbs. A large LED assembly model was provided to
entertain and educate visitors with their hands-on experience for assembling it.
A large LED word map experience area was established to help visitors realize
that LED technology was not only the future epoch-making light source but
also a green solution for carbon reduction.

Delta’s booth Delta Electronics presented its LED lamps, which were the first to be
certified by TÜV Rheinland Taiwan Ltd. in Taiwan. As the leading power
supply provider, Delta Electronics is dedicated to develop solutions both
environmental friendly and energy saving. The company cooperates with
Epistar to roll out ultra high efficiency LED (HV LED) lamps for LED lighting
applications. Delta’s LED street lamps have been verified by ITRI to have the
highest lighting efficiency in Taiwan and been the first to receive certifications
from TÜV Rheinland Taiwan, which awarded Delta with its TÜV certificate
during the exhibition.

At the 2010 Taiwan Photonics Festival, Industrial Technology Research Institute
(ITRI) presented many of its latest innovative optoelectronic technologies, such as
its 3D Image Display Technology, its portable Flexible Panels, and its Light Guiding
Plate and Diffuser with Self-Scattering Effect, which allow LED light sources to be
evenly dispersed. In the 3D field, ITRI has developed 3D software which converts
images from 2D to 3D, and enables wireless transmission of real-time 3D images.
This function allows images from a remote 3D monitor to be transmitted wirelessly
to the family television and enjoyed in real time in 3-D form. For portable electronic
devices, ITRI has developed Rollable AMOLED, using the most advanced plastic
backplane peeling technology together with Organic Light-Emitting Diodes
(OLED) to offer superb flexibility, high image resolution, and high reaction speed.
