OVERVIEW OF THE CONVAL ® 8 SERVICE RELEASES

Starting from version 8.0.3 CONVAL is compatible to Microsoft Windows 7 (32 and 64-bit).

CHANGES IN BUILD 8.0.6

MISCELLANEOUS
Revised: Now all messages - including error messages - can be hidden in the print-out.

Revised: Approximate calculation of the density of liquid air with the optional Thermodynamic module.

Bug fix: With certain mixtures according to GERG 2004 the dew-point pressure and the vapour pressure were
reversed.

CONTROL VALVE
Revised: Improved stability in the two-phase module.

Bug fix: At the calculation of silencers with bores larger than 10 mm the bore spacing a was stated to small.

Bug fix:. The flashing data at the calculation of liquid natural gas according to GERG 2004 is not always updated
on changes of the inlet temperature.

Bug fix: The sound pressure level of liquids according to


IEC 60534-8-4 (2005-08) with valves with different inlet
and outlet sizes and without input of the seat diameter was calculated inaccurate.

Bug fix:. The input of the pipe wall thickness, needed for the sound prediction, was not checked.

Bug fix:. Under certain conditions the information of the valve construction got lost when the input language
changed.

Bug fix: In the two-phase module an empty area was printed in some cases.

Bug fix: The Cv100 value of the valve Leusch LTR 43 Class 150 / PN 25, DN 150 is 998 GPM instead of 928 GPM.

DIFFERENTIAL PRESSURE FLOW ELEMENT


Revised: Improved stability.

Revised: Improved online help for orifice plates without upstream pipe according to ISO/TR 15377:2007.

SAFETY RELIEF VALVE


New: Standard valves according to API 526 (2009-04) were added to the database.

Revised: Missing limits of the set pressure pSet and the flow cross-section A0 were added.

Bug fix: An issue at the calculation of the mass flux G according to the single point omega method of the API 520
was fixed.

CONDENSER
Revised: Improved stability.

MISCELLANEOUS
Bug fix: In some cases the opening of calculations failed, if these were saved under an operating system with a
different language or locale setting.

Revised: Improved support of new Microsoft Office file formats, accelerated export to Microsoft Excel with
templates without loops.

CONTROL VALVE
New: The noise prediction for gases and steams is done now according to the updated IEC 60534-8-3 (2010-11)
by default.

Revised: Improved calculation of the outlet temperature of gases with very high flow velocities.

Revised: The information window right of the calculation shows now the data of all operating points.

Bug fix: Using the French or Polish user interface, the values of the valve modifiers of generic valves weren’t set
correctly in all cases.

Bug fix: The selected valve size was missing in the print-out of the two-phase module.

DIFFERENTIAL PRESSURE FLOW ELEMENT


Bug fix: With humid gases the input fields for the volume flow at standard conditions disappeared, if the
calculated value was changed from “qm” to “d” and vice versa.

SAFETY RELIEF VALVE


Bug fix: At the calculation of the inlet pipe the permissible flow resistance coefficient was calculated too high.

THERMODYNAMIC-MODULE
Bug fix: In some cases old calculations could not be opened.

Bug fix: The calculation of property data failed, if the steam quality was entered. Although percentage values
were indicated for the input of the steam quality in the mask, the calculation required values between 0 and 1.

COM-SERVER
New: The COM-server has a new function for showing and hiding detailed values (+/- view).

PROPERTY DATABASE
Bug fix: The dynamic viscosity of sodium hydroxide solution with the concentrations 30%, 40% and 50% was too
small around the factor 10.

MISCELLANEOUS
Bug fix: In some cases, changes to user-defined fields were not saved when closing the calculation.

CONTROL VALVE
Bug fix: The name of the calculation and the associated characteristic not always matched.

Bug fix: In rare cases, the pipe wall thickness was not consistent with the selected nominal pressure class of the
pipeline.

ACTUATOR FORCE
Bug fix: In some cases a warning message was issued even though the pressures were in the acceptable range of
the nominal pressure class.

DIFFERENTIAL PRESSURE FLOW ELEMENT


Bug fix: When opening calculations, which were created with CONVAL 5 or 6, the data of the material were lost
in circumstances.

RESTRICTION ORIFICE PLATE


Revised: The calculation basis for the restriction orifice plates are now documented in the help system.

PRESSURE LOSS
Revised: Improved calculation for gases with a real gas factor other than 1.

Bug fix: If the linear coefficient of thermal expansion was not calculated
based on the material data but has been
entered manually, the coefficient was not considered in the calculation.

PRESSURE SURGE
Revised: It was not always checked whether there are any missing input values.

SAFETY RELIEF VALVE


Revised: Improved stability. Possible side effects with several open calculations are resolved.

Revised: Improved calculation of pressure drop in the discharge pipe for gases with a real gas factor other than 1.

Revised: If the mass flow of flashing liquids is calculated without Omega, the mass flux G is marked as
approximated

Bug fix: An already existing DN value was not deleted, if a valve without size specification is selected from the
database.

Bug fix: The Size and pressure class (metric or ANSI) was not always correctly set when a valve from the database
was selected.

Bug fix: The pressure loss in the discharge pipe was calculated incorrectly for gases, if the nominal size of the
discharge pipe was chosen too small.

THERMODYNAMIC MODULE
Bug fix: After the chart was drawn, an access violation occurred under certain conditions. The program
continued to function.

CONTROL VALVE DATABASE


Revised: The series of manufacturer Metso - Neles were extended and updated.

SAFETY RELIEF VALVE DATABASE


Revised: The tool for maintaining the safety relief valve database has been revised:

• Relief valves without size specification can be gathered.

• Improved import and export to Excel. Particularly the import of ANSI valves from Excel failed.

Revised: The series of the manufacturer Leser were extended and updated; safety valves of manufacturer Herose
were included.

MATERIAL DATABASE
Revised: The material database contains now also copper alloys.

PROPERTY DATABASE
Revised: The media database now also contains sea water in different concentrations and Trichlorosilane
(HCl3Si).

COM-SERVER
Revised: Improved stability. Memory leaks are closed.

Revised: The online help system was revised.

Revised: The PDF export and the printing preview are available
on Windows 64-bit operating systems. Beside the
CONVAL PDF interfaces, also alternative PDF/XPS printers can be used.

Revised: In the substance compositions dialog a file with composition information (AGA.cds) can be imported.

Revised: Diagrams in full screen mode can be sized.

Revised: Standard graphs can be labelled and provided with a note for the print out.

CONTROL VALVES
New: Help system for operating characteristics.

Revised: Improved computation of the outlet conditions for gases, steams and all substances of the
thermodynamic module.

Revised: Improved calculation of incipient cavitation for liquids at high pressures.

Revised: The correction factor fm for two-phase flow according to Sheldon/Shuder can be overwritten.

Revised: The valves of the manufacturer Samson were updated.

Bug fix: Higher program stability, particularly in the two-phase module.

Bug fix: A warning with outlet velocities above 3 m/s is only given with possible cavitation damage and not
generally at choked flow conditions.

Bug fix: In the characteristic form of the two-phase control valve module resistance structures could be selected,
although these cannot be computed for two-phase media.

Bug fix: The IEC export template was modified, the Cv100 value was not handed over.

Bug fix: The pressure class of the valve could not be changed with valves from the data base.

Bug fix: The notification, whether a valve from the data base has curves, did not work always correctly.

Bug fix: Sometimes an error occurred at the computation of the sound curve in the characteristics, so that the
sound pressure of the operating points stood out against the remaining curve.

ACTUATOR FORCES
Revised: New default values for the factor of the seat tightness.

DIFFERENTIAL PRESSURE FLOW ELEMENTS


Revised: It was not obvious that the required outlet section of Venturi tubes is a multiple of the throttle opening
instead of the pipe inside diameter.

RESTRICTION ORIFICE PLATES


Revised: Improved calculation of incipient cavitation for liquids at high pressures.

Bug fix: In some cases the choked flow notification was missing, although the critical differential pressure pc
was calculated correctly.

SAFETY RELIEF VALVES


Revised: Improved computation of the outlet conditions and of the discharge pipes for gases and steams.

Revised: For
valves with compressible media without discharge pipes it is considered, that due to high flow rates
with Mach numbers higher than 1 at the valve outlet, the pressure at the valve outlet becomes higher than the
ambient pressure.

Bug fix: Improved stability with computations of compressible media with very high pressure and several
discharge pipes.

Bug fix: The rated coefficient of discharge for two-phase flow could not always be corrected manually.

TANK DEPRESSURIZATION
Revised: Improved performance.

Revised: Improved time forecast and simulation of calculations with large remaining pressure difference.

Revised: The input of the Cv value apart from the Cv100 value is not required any longer.

Revised: The manual input of a sound correction level is possible.

Revised: Different inlet and outlet valve sizes can be specified.

MATERIAL DATA CALCULATION


Bug fix: The parameter tmax had the incorrect caption “minimum operating temperature” instead of “maximum
operating temperature”.

COM-SERVER
New: A new interface IConcentration for access to substance compositions is available (further information in
COM server documentation).

New: A new interface ICVCharacteristicsfor better control over the characteristics graphics is available. Features
include reading parameters (ruler values) in dependence on stroke or flow (further information in COM server
documentation).

USER INTERFACE
Bug fix: At the export to MS Excel and other formats the values of the parameters were not written in the
current unit but always in the SI unit.

Bug fix: Various issues with the language change-over were addressed.

Bug fix: The function “save under the name of the identifier” did not consider points in file names correctly.

Bug fix: User-defined data were not aligned as the regular calculation parameters in the print-out.

Bug fix: The character font of the parameters’ shorthand symbols could not be changed in the print-out.

Bug fix: In order to ensure the compatibility of old COM server applications with CONVAL 8, the sequence of the
entries of the parameter „PipeClass“ was changed.

Bug fix: With plastic piping the speed of sound of the material was computed partially wrong.

Bug fix: Data could be lost at the import of CONVAL 7 flow resistances into the new data format.

CONTROL VALVES
Bug fix: Improved program stability.

Bug fix: Using Silencers with holes larger than 10mm the number of holes was not computed correctly.

Bug fix: After a language change-over the sound pressure level according VDMA 24422 (1989-01) of a gas was
indicated too low for valves with perforated plugs. Only after renewed change of input parameters the volume
was computed correctly.

Bug fix: Issues after a unit change-over were addressed, like for example incorrect displaying “Kv“ and/or “Cv“ in
the computation mask.

Bug fix: During two-phase flow with small flow rates corrections for non-turbulent flow were not accomplished.

Revised: The determination of the optimal Cv100 value with two or more given operating points was improved

Revised: The flow direction of the valve was added to the table of the controllability parameters.

Revised: The data of the manufacturer Fisher were supplemented by the series 461, EWD FTC, EWND/EWNT FTC,
EMS FTO and Baumann 42000.

Revised: The control valve data base was extended by the series 4040, 7020, and 8020/21 by Schubert & Salzer.

Revised: The computation of the necessary actuator forces of globe valves was revised.

DIFFERENTIAL PRESSURE FLOW ELEMENTS


Revised: The products of Systec in the pitot tube data base were updated.

RESTRICTION ORIFICE PLATES


Revised: The accuracy of the computation of liquids at choked flow conditions was improved. The simplified
equation for the critical differential pressure pc, used so far, is sufficiently exact only if the vapour pressure p v
is substantially smaller pc.

Bug fix: The diagram of the phase equilibrium for mixtures according GERG 2004 was not available.

SAFETY RELIEF VALVES


Revised: Standard and medium-dependant default values for the rated coefficient of discharge K d are now
indicated and marked as looked up. The field remained empty so far.

Revised: The estimation of the rated coefficient of discharge Kd,Z for two-phase flow based on the gas volume
portion of the two-phase system was revised. The value is now rewritable.

GENERAL, NON-MODULE-SPECIFIC IMPROVEMENTS IN CONVAL 8

INTERFACE
The Export of calculation was improved and simplified.

With gases at standard conditions besides molar mass, standard density and specific gas constant the specific
gravity can be given.

In the substance selection dialog the aliases of the selected fluid can be shown.

New pressure unit kgf/cm² and for liquid density specific weight.

Graphics exports as wmf, bmp, jpg and pdf files.

An auto-save function allows recovering calculations after an abnormal program termination of CONVAL.

The performance of the dependency graphs was optimized for multi-processor systems and multi kernel
processors.

In the dependency graphs a history list and incremental parameter search was introduced.

When changing the pipe class from metric to ANSI and vice versa the nominal size and pressure class was
converted.

SUBSTANCES
Improved density calculation of liquids from the substance database.

The calculation of mixtures according to new GERG2004 XT08 in the liquid phase, in the gaseous phase, or for
two-phase systems. Apart from an improved computing speed and stability the GERG2004 was expanded with
further components.

For many fluids the specific isobar heat capacity was added, which allows to calculate the density at two-phase
conditions.

MATERIALS
The material database was enhanced by some plastics.

For many materials new data for thermal conductivity, density, and elasticity modulus were added.

The pipe database was enhanced by large ANSI pipe sizes.

MODULE-SPECIFIC IMPROVEMENTS

CONTROL VALVES
The most important innovations are:

Improved user interface for entering up to three operating points.

Analysis of the controllability using the characteristics to optimize the dynamic control and to find the optimal
tuning point for positioners.

Better Cv100 suggestion taking into account the plant system.

Standard values for double and triple eccentric butterfly valves.

Prediction of the aerodynamic noise level according to IEC 60543-8-3:2008 (Draft)

Restricted stroke or angle for control valves (reduced Cv100).

Export to an English or German data sheet (Excel) according to IEC 60543-7.

New in the database: Fisher GX series.

DIFFERENTIAL PRESSURE FLOW ELEMENTS


The following differential pressure flow elements and calculation standards are supported by CONVAL 8:

ISO 5167 for corner orifice plates, D and D/2 orifice plates, flange orifice plates, ISA 1932 nozzles, long-radius
nozzles, Venturi tubes und Venturi nozzles.

ISO/TR 15377 for quarter circle nozzles, conical entrance orifice plates, eccentric orifice plates, and orifice
plates with drain holes.

ISO 9300 for critical flow Venturi nozzles

VDI/VDE 2041 for segmental orifice plates and quarter circle nozzles

ASME MFC-7M for corner orifice plates, D and D/2 orifice plates, flange orifice plates, ISA 1932 nozzles, long-
radius nozzles, Venturi tubes und Venturi nozzles.

ASME PTC 6 for ASME PTC 6 nozzles

SAFETY RELIEF VALVES


CONVAL 8 calculates the rated mass flow for safety valves according to:

AD Specification A2
ISO 4126-1:2004
API 520:2008
ASME:2004 Section VIII

The calculation of two-phase systems including flashing liquids is according to the Omega Method in API
520:2008

The calculation of the built-up back pressure of the discharge pipe with up to four pipe extensions and the
pressure loss of the feeding pipe according to ISO 4126-9:2008.

The calculation of reaction forces and the noise level for gases according to ISO 4126:9-2008.
