82nd Airborne Division. He went on
to serve for 15 months in Afghanistan
with the Bravo Company 1-508
Parachute Infantry Regiment.
While in Afghanistan, Johnson’s
battalion was responsible for
air assaults across southern
Afghanistan.
From there, Johnson moved to
Iraq with the scout platoon of the
1-505 PIR, also serving in southern
Baghdad and Salman Pak.
He said daily life in the Middle
East came with a persistent fear.
“While I was there in Afghanistan,
whenever we were on mission, I was
loaded down with 130 pounds of
body armor, weapons and gear, trek-
king miles into unknown territory,”
he said. “And while I was in Iraq, we
pretty much drove around doing mis-
sions and hoping we didn’t blow up.
“We lived like animals.”

‘Uncle Joe’ provides mentor
role for military students

Waiting outside professor Joe Caddell’s office in
Hamilton Hall, Ross Oldham zipped open his green
canvas bag Wednesday in search of materials for an
upcoming make-up exam.
But Oldham, a peace, war and defense major and for-
mer Marine, doesn’t just visit Caddell out of necessity.
As a fellow veteran himself, Caddell has taken a
mentor role for students like Oldham, providing a com-
fortable environment to reminisce on days of battle.
A former intelligence officer for the Air Force, Caddell
has made a career out of his devotion to country and
parlayed it into one of education.
He wears a pocketed tan or green military shirt on
most days, a constant reminder of the profound way his
service has molded his life.
“I never intended to make a career out of it,” Caddell
said of his time in the military. “But I wanted to study
it. I wanted firsthand experience.
“But I always knew I enjoyed academic life more than
anything.”
From courses on the history of intelligence operations
to air or sea power, students said Caddell’s passion —
and experience — defy the age-old phrase of “those who
can’t do teach.”

Signature increase bill is law, without Medlin support

The controversial bill that would increase the
number of signatures required to run for student
office became law Wednesday night — without
the endorsement of Student Body President
Hogan Medlin.
Medlin didn’t sign the bill but didn’t veto
it either, an action which allows its passage,

on it,” said Medlin, who added that he mostly liked
the bill, and that Student Congress’ effort at com-
promise from the original 500-signature increase
discouraged him from vetoing the bill.
“It is not enough to veto the whole thing any-
more,” he said.
Title II, Article VIII, Section 206 of the
Student Code gives the student body president
10 school days to sign or veto the bill. Without
executive action, the bill automatically becomes
law, under the Code.
Members of Student Congress said the body
would probably have overridden a veto.
Student Congress passed the law by a near-
unanimous vote.
Representative Lee Storrow said he agreed
with Medlin in opposing the law.
“I wish Hogan had vetoed the bill,” he said,
adding that he opposed the signature increase.
“None of us in (Student) Congress have run
for student body president,” he added. “Hogan
knows how much effort goes into that. It’s a little
foolish to superimpose our beliefs in increasing
the signature increase.”
The new signature total was decreased from
1,500 initially to 1,250 in the Oct. 26 meeting of
Student Congress.
Student Congress member Kristen Johnson said
she advocated a signature increase to reduce the
candidate pool and save the student body money.
The Board of Elections will pay each certified
candidate $250 for campaigning, as a provision
of the newly passed bill.

Astrophysicist to research
galaxy evolution with grant
A UNC astrophysicist has
received a $795,000 grant from
the National Science Foundation
to analyze the components and
structures of galaxies and the larg-
er cosmic environment in which
they exist.
Sheila Kannappan, an assistant
professor of physics and astrono-
my, obtained the grant through the
Faculty Early Career Development
Award, an honor given to junior
teacher-scholars who show prom-
ise for lifelong achievement in
building research and education
programs.
Kannappan’s work will pro-
duce an unprecedented view
of gas, dark matter and stars
in the universe through the
RESOLVE Survey. She will draw
on the resources provided by the
University’s partnership with
the Southern Observatory for
Astrophysical Research and the
South African Large Telescope,
which are in Chile and South
Africa, respectively.
She will also partner with Teach
for America and other UNC orga-
nizations to develop an astronomy
enrichment curriculum.
Scientists find ‘Trojan Horse’
cancer cell progression
UNC researchers discovered that
cells infected by a certain virus can
cause their growth to switch from
being benign to cancerous.
The Epstein-Barr virus makes
cells grow small sacs, called exo-
somes, which then change the pro-
teins and RNA inside the cell.
The infected cells can then go on
to become cancerous and can even
manipulate other, non-infected
cells.
One of the researchers, professor
Nancy Raab-Traub, called the exo-
somes the “Trojan Horse,” which
the virus uses to gain control over
nearby cells.
Nearly everyone who is infected
with the virus is infected for life as
the immune system cannot elimi-
nate it.
It can be transmitted through
saliva but rarely causes diseases.
However, it is often found in can-
cers like lymphoma and nose and
throat cancer.
Researchers said that now that
they know how the virus works,
the next stop is figuring out how to
stop it, or at least slow it down.
Researcher earns UNC award
for her work in therapy
Mary Relling, chairwoman of
pharmaceutical sciences at St.
Jude Children’s Research Hospital
in Memphis, Tenn., was recently
named winner of the Award for
Clinical Service from the Institute
for Pharmacogenomics and
Individualized Therapy at UNC.
Relling won the award for her
research on individualizing drug
therapy for childhood leukemia.
Relling’s work over the past 20
years has led to the discovery of
new genes that can be targeted dur-
ing therapy, said Howard McLeod,
director of the UNC institute.
UNC collaborates on project
for electronic record storage
UNC has collaborated with
National Archives and Records
Administration and the National
Science Foundation to create a new
electronic record storage system.

Cyberinfrastructure for Billions
of Electronic Records project, or

The N.C. Rabies Laboratory
reported a positive rabies result for
a skunk to Orange County Animal
Services Wednesday.
This result marks the county’s
seventh positive case this year.
The skunk was submitted for
testing Monday after potential
exposure it may have had with pets
at a residence in Hillsborough.
Two household cats and a dog

County foreclosure rates up Birth
Banks foreclose as stimulus ends

People in the county are losing
ownership of their properties at a
higher rate but not just because of a
dismal economic climate.
In the fiscal year that ended in
June, foreclosures in the county
jumped 64 percent as cash flows
from the federal stimulus package
dwindled and no longer kept banks
from foreclosing homes.
Since July 1, there have been
62 foreclosures — already almost
double the number from June to
December 2009.

both discipline and chaos.

playing field,” Goforth said. “The
whole point is that everyone has
an equal opportunity to run.
“Obviously our independence was
a big issue, but we didn’t know it was
in effect,” Goforth said. “Taking fund-

Birth control could soon be free
for women who are insured by the
UNC system or any other health
care provider.
According to the system’s insur-
ance policy, women who want birth
control must pay full price for it,
but this could soon change based
on an amendment in the national
health care reform bill passed ear-
lier this year.
A federal government advisory
board is expected to meet this
month to decide whether birth
control falls under the category of
women’s preventive health care,
which the amendment addresses.
The amendment requires insur-
ance companies to cover mammo-
grams and other forms of preven-
tive health care for women.
Patricia Huff, direc tor of
administration for UNC Campus
Health Services, said the cost of
birth control for women is par-
tially covered under most insur-
ance policies.
“Since birth control is covered
by most insurance plans now, I
would say it’s already considered to
be part of preventive health care,”
Huff said.
“I think a lot of things have to
be considered before the govern-
ment decides on a plan like this,
like where the revenue is coming
from and a lot of other things,” she
said.
Many health care providers for
women are advocating for the ben-
efits of the proposed plan.
“This really is a game-changer
for women,” said Paige Johnson,
spokeswoman for Planned
Parenthood of Central North
Carolina.
“Right now there are still finan-
cial barriers that prevent some
women from having access to some
of the more reliable forms of birth
control,” she said.
Johnson said the price of stan-
dard birth control methods, such
as the pill, are usually around $30
per prescription.
About 93 million prescriptions
for contraceptives were filled in
2009 alone.
Many think the coverage of birth
control, if passed, could start a shift
toward more reliable and expen-
sive forms of birth control, such
as intrauterine devices, which are
not used by as many women in
the United States because of their
higher cost.
The proposed plan would also
allow women with different types
of coverage to receive the same
benefits, at least for birth control.
“Most North Carolinians would
agree that if you pay for health
insurance, it ought to cover what you
need,” said Adam Searing, director of
the N.C. Health Access Coalition.
“If it’s a family planning method
generally covered by private health
care, then it should be covered
under the new health care system,”
he said.
But some conservative religious
groups are opposed to drugs like
the morning-after pill — which is
classified as birth control by the
Food and Drug Administration —
being covered.
“In terms of the moral compo-
nent, we’re talking about person-
al views, and individuals should
make their own decisions about
whether or not to have kids,”
Searing said.

In this week’s Dive, we take a look at one of the finest dining traditions in the area — taco trucks. While these providers of meals on four
wheels aren’t typically revered with the same respect as restaurants, we thought it was high time these paragons of cheap and tasty tortilla-
wrapped fare received their due. Staff writers Rachel Arnett, Joe Faile and Jonathan Pattishall sampled various fare from Carrboro’s Captain
Poncho’s, Taqueria Jalisco and Costa Azul. As patron Ryan Mills put it, “I want to spend my whole paycheck here, but I can’t because it’s so
cheap.” As impoverished and constantly hungry college students, we couldn’t have said it any better ourselves.

The chicharrón taco is soft, fleshy fried
pork skin and a curious shade of radioac-
tive orange to boot, but it’s also fresh and
defied all my expectations for non-stomach
destroying tastiness. I give it two and a half
thumbs up. Just don’t forget to smother it,
and everything else at this truck, in their
delicious salsa verde. — JP
The borrego taco is lamb with veggies,
wrapped in a tortilla. The tortilla provides
a vortex for the juicy-greasy goodness that
flows after the first bite. This one definitely
needs some spices — otherwise it tastes like
something from Lenoir Dining Hall. Despite
its cheap price, the money is better spent to
help pay late night cab fare. — JF
The pork filling taco had more potential
than was realized. Similar to the lengua, the
bland meat relied too heavily on the fresh
accoutrement of cilantro and onion. Not
the cream of the proverbial taco, but enjoy-
able. If anything, a bit of salsa verde and the
atmosphere surrounding the trucks makes
each cheap, filling taco worth a try. —RA

The best of my three tacos, the filling in
Poncho’s chorizo taco was the perfect match
for the fresh cilantro and onion topping. The
combo delivers the right amount of flavor
with a spicy kick. Not only was the filling
best balanced by the topping, but the tortilla
had the best consistency — not too thick and
not too thin. — RA
While it was not the most unusual filling
on the menus, the lengua (cow tongue) taco
was better than it sounds, but ultimately
the cilantro-onion topping overpowered the
mild flavor of the lengua. However, a driz-
zling of salsa verde provided another layer
of texture to the simple style of preparation
used for the lengua. — RA
The cashier at Azul laughed at my gringo-
ness when I asked if I was supposed to eat
the husk on my chicken tamale. That was
ok, because I was so absorbed in the steamy
cornmeal and chicken that I was impervi-
ous to her taunts. The salsa verde inside was
sharp, and at $2 it was a little pricey, but it
definitely made for good eating. — JP

The al pastor taco is a mixture of meat,
pineapple and chile accompanied by veg-
gies inside a handmade tortilla. The tradi-
tional meat flavor and tangy fruit provide
for a delicious contrast of flavors that isn’t
too spicy, a great reason to add homemade
salsas. For the price, it’s no investment, but
it’s more of a snack than a meal. — JF
I was suspicious of Jalisco for not listing its
prices, and sated my suspicions by trying two
tacos instead of one. The tripe taco was fatty,
rubbery and a bit nauseating, but also full
of workingman’s flavor. The azada taco was
a nice follow-up from a part of the cow that
doesn’t carry fecal matter. It was moister and
more chewable than the first. — JP
It may take a minute to warm up to the
idea of some tongue-on-tongue action, but
the lengua (cow tongue) taco is well worth
the risk and potential gross factor. But that
won’t last long — it is chewy with a lighter
meat taste and the homemade tomatilla
sauce makes for a great combination of taste

Hipsters aren’t the only ones
who love vinyl.
Aimed at nurturing the area’s
growing interest in vinyl collecting,
Carrboro’s Milltown restaurant will
be hosting its second annual record
swap this Saturday.
Tor Hansen, owner of Milltown
and co-founder of Yep Roc Records,
got the idea to host his own record
swap after participating in similar
events around the Triangle.
“I thought, ‘We’ve got this great
patio space,’” Hansen said. “‘Why
not use it?’”
Carrying out Hansen’s plan is
Milltown bar waiter and booking
manager Clarque Blomquist.
“One of the things we’re trying
to emphasize with this is to let
bands know they can pretty much
set up merchandise tables almost
like they would at one of their
shows,” Blomquist said. “So if any
band comes and has buttons, CDs,
or maybe they’ve pressed up some
vinyl or they have T-shirts — we’re
letting local bands know they can
come and set up a table.”
Anyone interested in putting
their own collection up for trade
or sale simply needs to show up —
the organizers will provide tables
at no charge.
“There are a lot of local collec-
tors in the area that will come out
to these things with crates of great,
old vintage records,” Blomquist
said.
The combination of experienced
collectors, local bands and labels
makes Milltown’s record swap one
of a kind.
“Usually when you go to these
things, it’s just used records —
which is great,” Blomquist said. “I
love to flip through old records and
collect them, but having the extra
angle with local bands and labels is
what sets our event apart.”
The Milltown record swap plans
to be more of a chance to meet peo-
ple with a shared interest in music
than an esoteric library battle.
“It’s really a social thing,”
Hansen said. “There were some
serious collectors last year, but for
people that are just getting into it,
it’s more just a time to get out and
talk about music and flip through
other people’s collections.”
What is it about vinyl records
that seems to attract a certain type
of music lover?
“It’s a different experience of
listening to music than just down-
loading something,” Blomquist
said.
Indeed it is. Modern day music
players sit idly in taskbars, using
algorithms to determine the next
track in your queue. Rarely are
these digital media players running
alone. While browsing the Internet
or grinding away at homework, the
convenience of the digital format
puts music into the background.

Hansen said. “You’re more commit-
ted to that music and the listening
experience.”
“You’re watching the record spin,
you’re looking at the cover, pulling
out some poster or inner sleeve —
there’s a lot going on. And then half
way through, you have to stop and
turn it over.”
Whether your preferred method
of cueing comes with a careful eye
and a steady hand or a swift dou-
ble-click, there’s something to be
said about the re-emerging popu-
larity of vinyl.
“I just read that the new Taylor
Swift record is going to come out
on vinyl,” Blomquist said. “It made
me laugh a little bit.”

Folk pop
Versatility is a key attribute free-
lancers need to survive in the world.
The Freelance Whales showcase
versatility through an amalgama-
tion of folk and electro-pop on its
debut album.
Weathervanes is chock full of
happy-go-lucky folk music that
will surely put a pep in your step
and smile on your face. The array
of instruments, from banjo to key-
board to music box, make for a dis-
tinct blend of pop that leans more
toward indie than mainstream.
The group has the ability to
cater to a song’s pace with its deli-
cate voices and collective talents. A
few of the songs drag on while they
find a sense of direction, an adverse
result of an otherwise youthful
product.
The band’s versatility is refresh-
ing, but it often means that many
of the songs sound as if they were
culled from several projects. There
are chilled-out, acoustic songs that
compete with illustrious, up-tempo
tracks.
Airy sounds and minimal gui-
tar playing create nostalgic ripples
comparable to Sufjan Stevens in
“Broken Horse” and “The Great
Estates.” Rapid banjo plucking on
“Hannah” and oscillating keyboards
on “Starring” initiate toe-tapping,
and their addictive choruses cycle
through your head on a permanent
loop.
Twitter and HGTV commercials,
as well as NBC show “Chuck,” have
featured the charming “Generator
1st Floor” for its easy-to-love,
dreamy vocals and inviting chant-
ing. The band knows how to make
good music, but there is a sizable
difference between its great songs
and its less impressive ones.
The group’s unique sound is
indicative of the expansion of indie
music to new and unforeseen fron-
tiers. Weathervanes is a great start-
ing point with its flexibility, but a
band-aid or two could help with its
lack of cohesion.

When a bumbling supervillain
named Megamind (Will Ferrell)
finally defeats Metro City’s adored
Metro Man (Brad Pitt), he slumps
into purposelessness.
While forging a false identity to
romance a TV reporter (Tina Fey),
he genetically implants superpow-
ers into a nerdy loser (Jonah Hill)
who calls himself Tighten. But
when Tighten decides to be vil-
lainous, Megamind must somehow
reconcile the good and evil inside
of him.
Due to Ferrell’s peculiar cin-
ematic powers, the film’s tone is
almost unrecognizable. As always,
Ferrell substitutes his character
with a sarcastically obnoxious ver-
sion of himself.
The odd result here is a quixotic,
cartoonishly hapless, endearingly
conceited stooge. Try as he might,
this fickle protagonist doesn’t elicit
sympathy, but he compensates with
belly laughs.
The self-reflexive, genre-flip-
ping spirit of the movie makes
those moments so hilarious.
Awkwardness and real-life deprav-
ity burst through the film’s sugar-
coat of frivolous ironies and hack-
neyed faux pas. If only the film
refused to redress itself in its Clark
Kent outfit.
Fey and Hill quench the modern
moviegoer’s thirst for thematic fun-
poking and virtuous debauchery.
Sore thumbs in an animated nev-
erland of superhero conventions,
they pull our Apatow and SNL
heartstrings and graciously step
out of the family-film formula.
The film is so three-dimension-
ally flat, it’s mind-blowing. Thus, if
saving money is your prerogative,
don’t see “Megamind” in its gim-
micky 3D version.
Just understand that underneath
its dreadfully average exterior is a
wholly original movie that evinces
itself from time to time, but never
dares to kick major ass.

Nowhere Boy
When telling the story of a rock
‘n’ roll icon, it can be easy to focus
only on the mythos of their legend-
ary exploits and ground-breaking
music. “Nowhere Boy” takes a dif-
ferent road in its presentation of
John Lennon’s early years, mostly
ignoring the celebrity and instead
centering on the impression-
able and fragile young man in his
youth.
Set in the 1950’s in Liverpool,
the movie follows a teenaged
Lennon (Aaron Johnson) and his
friends Paul McCartney (Thomas
Brodie Sangster) and Pete Shotton
(Josh Bolt) as they develop their
love for rock.
Their influence, as well as that
of Lennon’s estranged mother
Julia (Anne-Marie Duff ), puts
into motion a series of events that
eventually leads to the creation of
The Beatles.
Viewers hoping for a feel-good
film featuring endless Beatles
tracks will be sorely disappointed.
Director Sam Taylor-Wood opts
for a more grounded tone, and
Johnson’s portrayal of Lennon
shows a young man whose natural
appeal and cocksure swagger masks
a great deal of emotional vulner-
ability and need for approval.
The movie does give in to the
temptations for popular appeal
and there are a handful of “learn-
ing to play” montages set to swell-
ing music, which are inconsistent
with the pitch of the rest of the film.
Taylor-Wood also heavily suggests
an oedipal relationship between
John and Julia, but pushes it on
the audience with such vigor that
it seems forced and creepy rather
than representative of the often-
negative impact Julia had on her
son.
All in all, “Nowhere Boy” stir-
ringly presents the makings of a
troubled star. Though not flawless,
it does a good job of cutting a larg-
er-than-life figure down to size.

The Girl Who Kicked the
HOrnet’s Nest
The final segment of the men-
acing “Millennium” trilogy is here,
and it couldn’t have found a more
inappropriate venue than the gray-
haired Chelsea Theater.
If you haven’t read the bestsell-
ing novels by deceased Swedish
communist Stieg Larsson or seen
the first two films, that doesn’t
really matter.
A quick online summary is all
one needs for the back story on
Lisbeth Salander, Larsson’s defi-
ant hacker-punk heroine who is
determined to kick lots of ass and
let every one else take their sweet
time figuring out why.
The plot-driven trilogy is enor-
mously complicated, so suffice
it to say for “Hornet’s Nest” that
Lisbeth (Noomi Rapace) is paying
the price for the revenge that she
took on her father in the last movie.
After being mistreated by her dad,
her doctor, her legal guardian and
the state, a veritable conspiracy of
dirty old men, Lisbeth struck back
but wound up with a bullet in her
skull.
Luckily, she pulls through sur-
gery, and the perfunctory follow-
up assassination attempt, to get
her day in court.
With the help of investigative jour-
nalist Mikael Blomkvist (Michael
Nyqvist), she then seeks to bring
down the group of security state
officials that shielded her abusive
father in the first place. And it turns
out they could just be incriminated
in white slavery and child pornogra-
phy as well. How convenient.
What could have been simple
feminist revenge fantasy becomes
moderate-to-highly affecting femi-
nist revenge fantasy thanks to its
persistently coordinated art direc-
tion. Garish lighting and darkly
toned sets lend the film an expres-
sionistic gothic mood that goes
unbroken during its brutal two and
a half hour running time.
Rapace’s wickedly minimalist
performance doesn’t hurt either.
Despite the distractions of a couple
of comical characters and the lilt-
ing Swedish language, this movie
belongs to Lisbeth from beginning
to end.

Due Date
In much of the same vein as
the classic “Planes, Trains and
Automobiles,” “Due Date” borrows
its source material heavily from its
1987 counterpart.
However, this modern rendition
of the classic road comedy cannot
capture the same charm and wit
that made the previous movie so
successful.
Hastily boarding a plane to Los
Angeles for the birth of his child,
Peter Highman (Robert Downey
Jr.) is denied and placed on the
“no fly” list due to a rambunc-
tious encounter at the airport with
the odd Ethan Tremblay (Zach
Galifianakis). Stripped of cash and
resources, Highman begrudgingly
accepts Tremblay’s offer to drive
across the country to LA.
Directed by Todd Phillips, “Due
Date” has a predictably simple
formula: get from point A to
point B and add ridiculous antics
in between. The story breaks no
comedic molds, and as a result,
the film’s value lies in the middle
comedic bits.
With a masturbating dog as
one of the highlights, the com-
edy is crude in the same manner
as Phillips’ previous blockbuster
film, “The Hangover,” but it does
not quite capture the same light-
heartedness as its successful pre-
decessor.
This is in large part due to
the chemistry of the two costars.
Individually, each actor puts on a
solid performance. Downey exudes
his trademark suaveness while
Galifianakis once again plays the
awkward screwball that has gotten
him so much recent attention.
Still, the characters’ combina-
tion of the archetypal conserva-
tive businessperson and carefree
oddity does not flourish. The pair’s
chemistry seems contrived and the
unlikely friendship that is inevi-
tably created fails to compel the
viewer.
With its few bright moments,
the film will entertain the casual
weekend crowd. Yet with such a
strong number of names behind
the movie, “Due Date” disappoints
and runs out of gas before it ever
reaches a satisfying point B.

CARY — North Carolina was not
taking its matchup with rival N.C.
State lightly.
Not after the Wolfpack upset
UNC in the ACC Tournament
last season. Not after the Red and
White gave the Tar Heels all they
could handle in their September
regular-season matchup.
But from the beginning,
Wednesday’s game didn’t have the

“Having the two guys back that
were out for a while in Michael
Farfan and Stephen McCarthy
helped us tremendously not only
with their individual performance,
but also in the depth of our team,”
UNC coach Elmar Bolowich said.
“Everybody bought in and the
guys had an outstanding perfor-
mance.”
The Tar Heels started with an
early lead 16 minutes in when Kirk
Urso’s right foot struck its third
short-corner victim of the season.
Urso tapped a left-side corner kick
to Farfan, who stopped the ball for
Urso. He swung the ball into the
box toward the near post and a
few seconds and a Martin Murphy
header later, the Tar Heels had the
only goal they would need.
“We are getting scouted every
week so people know we are play-
ing a short corner,” Bolowich said.
“But still, the defender has to be 10
yards away. It’s just a matter of how
quickly can you execute it.”
McCarthy’s return forced the
team’s leading scorer, sophomore
Enzo Martinez, to the bench. But
Martinez didn’t let that stop him
from leaving his impression on the
game. Martinez doubled UNC’s lead
12 minutes before halftime with his
first goal coming off a stellar cross
from defender Matt Rose.
“I’d like to thank coach for that
opportunity, for letting me come off
the bench and do what I could for
the team,” Martinez said. “I think
that says a lot about our team that
you can put anyone out there and
the momentum doesn’t drop.”
The Wolfpack ratcheted up the
pressure in the second half and cre-
ated several scoring opportunities,
but Farfan put the game on ice with
an impressive 66th-minute tally.
The All-America midfielder
received a pass across the box from
forward Alex Dixon, nudged it with
his left foot and quickly blasted the
ball with his right. It was his second
goal in as many games since return-
ing from an ankle sprain Friday.
“When Michael hit this beautiful
shot, that really broke the ice and
that gave us the confidence that
we’d bring this home,” Bolowich
said. “N.C. State probably knew at
that point that it would be a tough
road to climb.”
Martinez scored again with nine
minutes remaining to close the
Tar Heels’ scoring. It was UNC’s
highest-scoring game of the season
against ACC competition and the
largest margin of victory in tourna-
ment history for the Tar Heels.

into another gear.”
Another difference between
UNC’s 4-0 blowout and regular
season nail-biter was the energy,
or lack thereof, surrounding the
match.
In the regular-season matchup,
the atmosphere was electric. The
stands at Raleigh’s Dail Soccer
Stadium were packed. And those
who were turned away at the gate
watched from the refuge of a near-
by parking garage.
Maybe it was the cold weather,
or maybe it was the neutral site.
Whatever the reason, Wednesday’s
game didn’t have the same crowd
or buildup.
“It was a lot different tonight
because I didn’t have that con-
stant chatter from behind the
goal,” sophomore goalkeeper Scott
Goodwin said.
“The first time we played them
it was a really good game, a very
physical game and very intense.
They always get up to play us as
we do them. I definitely think we
were pumped up for this game, and
I think it showed.”
But unlike the last contest
between the two teams, the out-
come of this game was almost
never in doubt.

After the Tar Heels’ two early
first-half goals, North Carolina
could have put the game on cruise
control.
Instead, the Tar Heels continued
to score, taking 13 of their 21 shots
in the second half.
Forced to move up more men on
the attack, the N.C. State defense
opened up even more — allowing
two second-half goals with many
shots just missing their mark.
It did not help the Wolfpack that
it was playing without starting goal-

true freshman Carlos Villa, who was
granted no margin for error against
the North Carolina attack.
The Tar Heels’ dominance
showed not only on the scoreboard
but also in the body language of the
players.

N.C. State senior captain Chris
Zuerner said that the neutral field
certainly factored into the lack of
energy.
“Whenever you are at home,
you feel like you have a man up,”
Zuerner said.
“The game plan was the same.
The first two goals came off set
pieces … and I think that was the
turning point right there and the
rest was the game.”

Fire department finds site for education
Fire Place will ‘reach more people’

After losing its original venue,
the Chapel Hill Fire Department
has found a new site to host its fire
safety programs.
Located at 301 Meadowmont
Village Circle, The Fire Place pro-
vides fire safety courses to residents
with a special focus on educating
children.
“It’s important that we allow
citizens to participate in safety pro-
grams,” Assistant Fire Marshal Doug
Kelly said. “You don’t have to be a
child to go out and participate.”
The center’s programming
includes a puppet musical on fire
safety for children as well as CPR
classes for adults. The center is
open Tuesdays, Thursdays and
Sundays from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.

one of our raids,” he said.
“Knowing that we had made
refugees, and knowing that these
innocent people were having to
leave their homes because of what
we were doing really struck me.
“I felt guilty, and it personally
hurt my feelings to have the people
I’m trying to help look at me in fear
that I might hurt them.”
Despite the hardship he wit-
nessed, Johnson said he hopes to
one day return to the Middle East
to help refugees.
It was with that goal in mind that
Johnson turned down an oppor-
tunity to attend the U.S. Military
Academy to enroll in a school he
instantly fell in love with — UNC.

“The perspective he brings as
a former military server and the
insider knowledge of the workings
of the military and intelligence offi-
cers is amazing.”
That respect has also been
appreciated by Caddell’s peers, who
say Caddell’s firsthand knowledge
proves to be invaluable in the class-
room.
“Professor Caddell is a tremen-
dous resource for students to have
because he is academically trained,
but also because he has a long pro-
fessional career in the military,”
said Wayne Lee, chairman of the
PWAD curriculum.
“It’s interesting that he can com-
bine these two things and make it
so successful.”
Lee added that Caddell often
shares war stories with his col-
leagues.
After attending the University as
an undergraduate, where Caddell
was a member of the ROTC, he
entered the Air Force during the
Cold War as a lieutenant colonel
intelligence officer.
Following his service on active
duty, Caddell spent 20 years in the
reserves, where he said he gained
valuable insight into life as a mem-
ber of the armed forces.
Caddell said he never faced
extreme danger while serving
because he was an intelligence
officer, but said he still witnessed
both the good and bad aspects
of life as a member of the armed
forces.

Health care reform plan
uncertain after midterm

The newly gained Republican
majority in the N.C. General
Assembly and U.S. House of
Representatives could mean an
uncertain future for health care
reform.
The state created a health care
panel to evaluate the reform and
work on implementing it in North
Carolina. But with Republicans
announcing their plans to repeal
health care overhaul, the panel’s
work could no longer be needed.
“It’s really up to them if they
want to go a different route,” said
Pam Silberman, project director of
the advisory panel and president
and CEO of the N.C. Institute of
Medicine.
“At this point we are still going
forward and looking at the bill and
seeing what it means for North
Carolina,” she said.
The review began after a request
from the N.C. Department of
Health and Human Services and
the N.C. Department of Insurance,
Silberman said.
“A lot of it is looking at the dif-
ferent provisions to see how to
best implement the law and look-
ing for opportunities for funding,”
Silberman said.
As health care continues to be
contested on the federal level,
state legislators await a decision
as well.
N.C. Sen. William Purcell,
D-Anson, co-chairman of the sen-
ate’s health care committee, said he
expects changes to be made to the
bill but not a repeal.

say they are going to repeal it,”
Purcell said. “I don’t think they
have the votes to override a veto.”
Purcell said he challenges
Republicans to present their plan.
“My question is: What is their
alternative for the poor folks who
don’t have coverage?,” he said.
But N.C. Sen. Harris Blake,
R-Harnett, member of the sen-
ate’s health care committee, said
Republicans get a bad reputation
that they don’t deserve.
“Republicans that I know and
certainly myself get that notion of
being mean-spirited and not caring
about people who need help.”
Blake said President Barack
Obama’s bill is not an adequate
solution for the health care issue.
“I think that health care bill in
Washington is an absolute disaster,”
he said. “Hardly anybody knows
what’s in that bill. It’s like a battle
ship that’s lost its rudder.”
But Democrats say the health
care bill is reducing costs.
“By covering a broad base of
people, that’s the way you are able
to keep the cost down,” Purcell
said.
Blake said the N.C. Senate’s
only connection to the bill is that
it’s funding part of the cost of
Medicaid.
“The state of North Carolina has
an obligation to pay for 25 cents
on the dollar cost of Medicaid. The
federal government pays the other
75 cents.”

love
W
hat is love?
The question has
been contemplated
throughout the ages by authors,
philosophers and Haddaway
alike. But now science is entering
the conversation. Through the
use of functional magnetic reso-
nance imaging, or fMRI, neuro-
scientists have finally begun to
uncover what’s going on inside
the brain of somebody in love.
Developed in the early 1990’s
by Seiji Ogawa, fMRI is the
method by which one measures
activity in areas of the brain
through increased blood flow,
and correlates it with a subject’s
thoughts prompted by stimuli.
Stephanie Ortigue, Ph.D.,
and her colleagues at Syracuse
University reviewed the results
of six different fMRI studies
regarding love from the past
decade, and they published some
interesting trends in this month’s
Journal of Sexual Medicine.
Subjects who scored high on
the Passionate Love Scale (yes,
that’s an actual scale) were asked
to view photos or the names of
their romantic partners. Their
brain responses were then mea-
sured by fMRI, as compared to
their responses to non-romantic
friends or to strangers.
The studies found that
thoughts of love resulted in
increased activity in the sub-
cortical dopaminergic-related
brain areas. Don’t worry about
the jargon: These are just areas
strongly associated with euphoria
and reward, and with euphoria-
inducing drugs, such as cocaine.
On the other hand, the studies
also found decreased activity in
other parts of the brain — like
the amygdala — associated with
anxiety, fear, and grieving.
Does this mean that love is just
a neural response to a personified
drug?
It’s a little more complicated
than that. Increased activity was
also found in the hippocam-
pus, involved in memory and
mental associations, and in the
insula, important for emotion.
Additionally, Ortigue found activ-
ity in higher-order cortical areas
used in social cognition, attention,
and self-representation.
She told Syracuse University
News, “the complex concept of
love is formed by both bottom-up
and top-down processes from the
brain to the heart and vice versa.”
So what’s the point? These
findings shed light on what most
of us already know: We want love.
The increased reward and
decreased anxiety present a poten-
tial neural mechanism to explain
the human motivation for love.
And while love is not required
for sex, studies have shown posi-
tive correlations between love
and sexual function. This new
knowledge could prove useful
for clinicians and therapists to
improve patients’ sexual health,
maybe even in the form of drug
therapies targeted to the implied
brain areas.
These studies could also begin
to explain how pharmaceuti-
cal drugs can affect love. For
example, antidepressants like
Prozac are already known to have
sexual side effects, but Dr. Helen
Fisher of Rutgers University has
suggested that they could also
inhibit a person’s ability to love.
We can’t really say anything
for sure until more research is
done, so don’t expect a new pill
for lovesickness any time soon.
Nevertheless, we now know
a little more about love, and,
according to Ortigue, it’s “more
scientific than you think.”

The Interdisciplinary Cluster Program won’t
be missed if new curriculum is approved

upplemental Education
courses provide the defin-
ing component of what
comprises a liberal arts educa-
tion. The notion that students at
UNC are required to study sub-
jects not integral to their career
plans serves as a reminder that
liberal arts lies at the heart of
our campus’ spirit. But the clus-
ter program introduced at UNC
four years ago is too complicat-
ed to be helpful.
While the dis tributive

ter than the Interdisciplinary
Cluster Program, neither
currently serve to effectively
provide the appropriate level
of supplemental education

Duke fumbles response to near-toilet tragedy

ball game tailgates, Duke
University officials chose
the wrong solution to what they
have come to agree is a problem
with their Saturday ritual.
While it’s true that the inci-
dent that precipitated the
decision — the discovery of an
unconscious teenage sibling of
a Duke student in a portable
toilet at the tailgate — is alarm-
ing, the university’s solution is
neither comprehensive nor
entirely rational.
If their immediate goal is to
prevent a similar incident from
occurring in the future, then
they have failed.

yet. But, assuming it will be,
placing the cluster option out-
side the requirement is a wel-
come change.
At UNC, we are required to
take a broad range of classes
that are not necessarily related
to our major. But the cluster

course track, they would do
well to effectively eliminate
the option.
The proposed changes are a
solid start for revamping the
Supplemental Education cur-
riculum. While a good idea
in theory, clusters constitute
another aspect of that curricu-
lum that just didn’t work out
in practice.
Removing the cluster
option from the curriculum is
the right move. They won’t be
missed.

right now is how they can best
mitigate the negative aspects of
this tradition while maintaining
the spirit it fosters. Their cur-
rent answer does little to pro-
tect the safety of their students

dence, we hope Duke looks to
schools like ours for guidance
— schools that, on the whole,
successfully balance spirit with
safety.

Classes are not canceled.
Businesses are not closed. Many
do not even acknowledge the day
that it is. It is not just a date on a
calendar. It is a day to reflect and
to thank those in uniform who
are fighting for the United States.
It is a day to thank the men and
women who not only fought,
but also died as a sacrifice for
your freedom. It is a day to show
these veterans our appreciation.
365 days each year, they are pro-
tecting our freedom, our liberty.
What do they get in return? One
day of thanks.
This day we set aside for them
is so insignificant compared to
what they give for us.
I ask you now to think about
and take the time to thank all vet-
erans for their dedication to this
country. Thank them for having
the courage to leave their fami-
lies and risk their lives. Thank
them for everything they do. Any
simple act of thanks can make a
world of difference to veterans
who may feel forgotten. On this
Veterans Day, thousands will
send a card, wear the nation’s col-
ors proud, and thank all those in
uniform. What will you do? The
day after Veteran’s Day, they will
still be veterans; they will still be
dedicating their time to serving
this nation for your freedom.

I’m a UNC employee, fan, and
a Carolina Dad. I don’t know
Butch Davis, but I know two
men who do.
Dr. Goldstein knows Butch
Davis from his Cleveland days. I
recently talked to Dr. Goldstein.
He was unquestioningly positive
about Coach Davis: his family and
home life, how children behave
and interact with others, their own
sons’ long-standing friendship. Dr.
Goldstein trusts Butch Davis.
Roy Wall is a member of our
church and I know him well. Roy
knows about Coach Davis from the
faith side of his life. Coach Davis is
a man of faith, as are many people
in this community and at UNC.
He may not talk about it publicly,
but everything he has done in
response to the inquiry is a tribute
to his bedrock of faith. He hasn’t
blamed, made excuses, or hidden:
he has spoken the truth, cooperat-
ed, and found solutions. Roy Wall
believes in Coach Davis.
What I have seen of Coach Davis
is the drive to keep a football pro-
gram together during a drawn-out
investigation. I have seen the team
play every game — and improve;
I’ve seen Coach Davis coach, hire
new coaches, and plug holes with
inexperienced players.
Based on my two friends and
what I have seen, keep Coach
Davis until he retires from coach-
ing. He has cooperated with the
investigation and been the ulti-
mate coach: keeping together
100 men who could easily have
given up on themselves before
the first snap of the season.

Sports writer insensitive
to women’s soccer player
TO THE EDITOR:
The article regarding the
UNC soccer team’s ACC loss
(“Klingenberg triumphs and
falls,” Nov. 10) was complete-
ly insensitive and distasteful
regarding Meghan Klingenberg.
Writing two articles about
the loss, one just focusing on
the missed PK by Meghan, was
completely heartless. Student-
athletes work up to 50 hour
weeks and to highlight one mis-
take out of a hundred successes
undermines the hard work that
they put in to represent the
University of North Carolina.
Next time you write a sports
article, think if you would want
your picture and a title calling
you a failure blown up on a page

ebrate and give thanks to our
veterans. I have had the tremen-
dous privilege to work with both
living veterans and the families
of the fallen and I promise that
I have never met such a group
of extraordinary people. I have
never felt the pride I felt as I
stood in Arlington, or walked
the beaches of Normandy, or
sat in the houses of heroes lis-
tening.
From the depths of Valley

our fellow Americans have
