NOTE:
NFPA 16 – SYSTEM TO BE DESIGNED FOR THE WHOLE AREA.(OPEN NOZZLE W/ DELUGE

NFPA – 16A – SYSTEM TO BE DESIGNED FOR DEMAND AREA 5,000 FT2

NFPA – 30 – FOAM SYSTEM FOR FLAMABLE LIQUIDS OR SOLID PILE.
APPLICATION RATE : 0.30 GPM/ FT2 OVER 2,000 FT2 .

R = 11,385 cfm.
From the equipment list 12,000 cfm is selected.
Hence 170 gpm @ 59 psi is required from data sheet.
Nozzles uses a plate to slice small jets of water & contains a variety of droplet sizes.
Large amount of small droplets have a greater surface area than large droplets. Water
Mist turns to steam, it expands to 1700 times, forcing oxygen away from the flame.
Nozzles:
Spacing between Nozzles.( 2.44 mtrs.)
Distance from Wall & Nozzle – 1.22 mtrs.
Max. distance between Ceiling & Nozzles. – 0.30 mtrs.
CO2 SYSTEM:
CO2 is colorless odourless gas, electrically non conductive & non corrosive inert
clean agent
CO2 is approximately 50% heavier than air & 0.03% by volume present in the
atmosphere.
Certain Conc. Will support human or animal life.
Extinguishes fire by reducing oxygen content & will not support combustion.
Temp. of CO2 from Nozzle -110°F(-78.8°C).
Clean up cost is negligible( completely vaporizes).
STORAGE OF CYLINDERS:
High Pressure – ambient temperature 70°F(21°C) & internal pressure 850 psig.
Low Pressure - ambient temperature 0°F(17.8°C) & internal pressure 300 psig.
PIPING: Black or G.I conforming to ASTM A-53 Seamless or Electric Welded.
TOTAL FLOODING:
Deep-Seated Fire ( Paper, Baled cotton, clothing.. smoldering fire conditions-class
A) are extinguished by prolonged action of a high concentration of carbon dioxide.
Retaining the agent in the protected space affects the fire ability to Re-ignite. After
the design conc. is reached , the conc. shall be maintained for a substantial period of
time, but not less than 20 minutes.
The system shall be designed to achieve 30% conc. in 2 Min. with the remainder
occurring in 7 Min.
Example: L= 13.72m, W= 9.15m, H= 4.57m.
Volume = 573.71 m3.
Flooding factor = 50% - 1.33 kg CO2/ft3.
573.71 x 1.33 = 763.04 kg CO2 . reqd.
For 30% conc. in two min.- 0.043 Lb. CO2/ft3 (0.688 kg CO2/ft3 )factor to
by multiplied. = 573.71 x 0.688
= 394.72 kg required in 2 min.
= 197.36 kg/min. reqd.
Total Discharge = 763.04 / 197.36 = 3.87 Minutes.
Any Leakage in room shall be calculated for 20 min. using the leakage calculation
chart in NFPA-12.
SURFACE FIRE( Flammable liquid, gases, and solids):
They are subject to prompt extinguishment when carbon dioxide is quickly
introduced into the enclosure in sufficient quantity to overcome leakage.
Conc. shall be in no case less than 34% and the agent quantity should be discharged
within one minute.
Volume ( m3) Kg CO2 / m3. Calc. Qty not less than- kg.

Local application system are used for the extinguishment of surface fires in
flammable liquids, gases & solids where the hazard is not enclosed. Since the hazard
is not totally enclosed the qty of CO2 shall be increased by 40%(multiplied by 1.4).
The minimum effective discharge time for agent shall be 30 seconds.
Rate by Area method used to protect two dimensional surfaces.
Dip Tank: L - 0.84m x W - 1.30m = 2 Nozzles are reqd.
Each Nozzle covering 0.85 x 0.85 mtrs.( check the selection chart from NFPA-12)
Flow rate reqd. = 12.7 kg/min.x 2 nos. = 25.4 kg/min.
Total Flow Rate reqd. = 25.4 x 1.4 x .5 = 17.78 kg.
Rate by Volume Method used to protect three dimensional hazard and shall be
based on assumed enclosure volume(2 feet{0.61m} greater than the extreme
dimensions of the specific hazard)
Flow rate shall be = 1 lb/min/ft3(16 kg/min/m3).
Test Cell : L = 3.05m, W = 0.91, H = 0.91m.
Assumed Volume : [3.05+0.61+0.61]x[0.91+0.61+0.61]x[0.91+0.61]
= 4.27x2.13x1.52 m = 13.82m3.
Flow Rate = 16kg/min/m3 = 221.1 kg/min. reqd.
Agent Supply = 221.1x1.4x0.50 = 154.80 kg.
Example:
2. Pit Dimension
As per NFPA 12 : Sec. 3.3.2.3, if part of the hazard is to be protected by Total Flooding,
discharge rate shall be divided by 1.4 and by time taken for Local Application discharge
in minutes.
TOTAL = 1103 = 1576 lbs. (Required)
0.7
Theoretical Calculation:
1" – 320 lbs/min = 320/2.2 = 145.455 kg/min.
Specific gravity = 1.53 ( 0.60)
= 145.455/ 1.53 = 95.068 lpm = 25.117 gpm.
= 25.117 / (13.5 x 0.60) = 3.10
For 3.10 pressure drop ^p = 10 psi = 0.6896 bar
For 10 mtr head of water/ 1.53 = 6.536 mtr.(constant)
= 0.6896 x 6.536 = 4.51 mtr. ~ 15 feet.
