REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Local Literature

Some people wondering why someone who watched Korean dramas become addicted

and even come into a situation that they will devoted their life into it. According to Tapulgo

(2012), she discussed her opinions about why Korean dramas are more titillating than Filipino

drama. She stated that at first you will hate Korean dramas but not until you watch it and make

yourself realize that it is really fascinating not only because of the actresses and actors who plays

the part or role of the character and has a catching looks but of the story that could be done in

real life. And she even supported it with another article, it is a study conducted by Kreah (2007),

it is about the different reasons why someone love watching Korean Dramas/Series. In this

article, it says that the Filipino drama's story really happens in life and has also the same themes

all over again so that the watchers is no longer interested in watching it while the Korean drama's

story is rarely happens and realized that there are simple experiences in our lives to be seen in the

TV and hits your heart slowly. Also, it stated that most of Korean Dramas have their stories and

episodes well-planned before they start shooting and it is rarely happen that they lengthen the

episodes. In addition, the few characters gives also an impact to the audience because viewers

can easily go with the flow of the story. Unlike our local shows, there are many subplots, and

when it happens, a new character comes or a character dies or disappears. The story becomes

complicated and sometimes too draggy, that most of the times it lasts for a year that makes

viewer become bored to watch it. So when Korean Dramas (we call it koreanovelas) are aired in

the Philippines, and become a hit, local shows started shortening their air time. When the

Page | 7
Philippine TV aired some Korean dramas, the local shows become unwanted. That's why there

are now a lot of Filipino people who are addicted in watching Korean dramas.

Relating this to our study, Korean dramas catch the eyes of each and every one because

of the heart melted dramas they make. We can see the real life situation in Korean dramas that

why many people patronize their stories. It seems like they get some lessons and inspirational

thoughts found in the Drama’s that they have watched. This affects their emotional and

psychological thinking that they may apply in their real life.

Local Literature

According to Casasoia (2017) there are some side effects of watching Korean dramas,

like they can’t stop there self from watching another episode. She stated that “the Korean dramas

are undeniably addictive and add the fact that Korean actors and actresses are certainly too

adorable”. Now, How can you just stop watching?. And she even supported it with another

example of side effect of watching Korean dramas, it is about the people who are suddenly take

interest in learning the Korean languages. She also stated that “Some of the people who are

watching Korean drama hate when they can’t watch new episode and have to wait until subbers

finish adding English subtitles to it”, sometimes they wish that they could understand hangul so

that they can watch Korean dramas anytime they want with no worries about the subtitles.

Watching Korean dramas have a bad effects but there are also good effects like she also stated

“watching Korean dramas could be one of the greatest things we can ever do during our free

time. It lifts us up when we’re feeling down; It makes us believe in the idea of love once again it

helps us realize that there is more to life than painful reality and never ending responsibilities to

Page | 8
accomplish. Thus, give yourself a pat in the back for giving yourself some time to loosen up and

unwing the help of Korean drama.”

Foreign Literature

Korean drama are too popular in today’s generation that even the people around the

world becomes their audience. Bacon (2016) discussed or stated some informations about “Why

Korean Dramas Are Popular”. He stated that the popularity of Korean dramas and music was

discovered due to the Gangnam Style by Psy hit Youtube like a tsunami, many people were

surprised to discover how popular Korean music and dramas are in America and outside of

Korea. He also stated that Korean dramas are hot on video streaming in different websites like

Hulu and Netflix. But currently airing dramas can't be subtitled and loaded quickly enough to

satisfy their English-speaking audience. The Korean entertainment industry is booming right

now. He then also stated that the global audience for Korean music and Korean television is

exploding across Asia and it is even spreading to Europe and North America. This surge of

Korean cultural popularity has been called "Hallyu." It means Korean wave and refers to the way

Korean entertainment is spreading around the world.

Relating this to our study, Korean’s influence many people because of the Korean dramas

they present. People see the unique qualities that Korean have. They imitate or idolize it because

they found it cool and interesting. The Korean music also create a big impact in many people,

when Gangnam style by Psy hit, a lot of people were surprised and got interested in Korean

music. Also the fashion of Korean. Many Filipinos find it cute until they imitate it to have their

“OOTD” or outfit of the day as they called it and get attention. There are many reason why

Korean are popular in many people.

Foreign Study

The globalization greatly affects everyone especially when it comes to culture and social

activities. One particular subject is the huge effect of the Koreans to the world or the “Korean

Wave” as told by Won-Jun, Lee’s in his research study (2015). For example, the worldwide

success of the song “Gangnam Style” by PSY which became the most viewed video in Youtube.

Since then, a lot of people have been following to the craze of Korean Wave and have been

willing to adopt their culture, fashion, food, music and technology (Jung, 2006). But the most

influential trend from Koreans is their dramas that is because its content has such a high quality

(Hogart, 2013).

The Korean dramas prompt the people to be positive about life which greatly improves

their behaviour. It is because the people’s praising for the Koreans concept of beauty and love

dominates their whole personality (McCutcheon et al., 2002), making them very active in living

their lives. This also result for the growth of the impact of the market of the Koreans because

apparently the pop culture acts as one of the great influences for the consumers in the

marketplace (Hirschman, 1990). Thus, this proves that the “Korean Wave” is taking over, not

just in the Philippines but worldwide. But knowing this, it does not mean and does not make the

people to forget their own cultures and traditions. Because Koreans are just one of the proofs that

despite of coming from different races and having various kinds of cultures, people would still

choose to understand, accept and even embrace others ideologies for the sake of spreading love

and equality to everyone in the world.

Conclusion

As a conclusion, Korean drama affects our mind on how we act as a person. It also affects the

way we show ourselves and how we communicate with to others. In other words, watching Korean

drama can give a huge impact to us if we were not able to be aware of the different aspects in our life

that can affect just by continuously watching this. Korean drama is not the only way for us to relax

ourselves. There are a lot of hobbies that are suggested to be good as watching this Korean dramas,

like hobbies can done even if it is in the outdoor or indoor.

Most of the Filipino millennial student in SFHS are addictive in Korean dramas not only by

its unique concept of story, it is also by the actors and actresses have a beautiful faces and adorable

way of acting.

It really affects the people or student’s financial well-being because many of them hoping to

try what is on the Korean drama they watched, they always use money in order to buy some stuffs

and to imitate some fashion’s style. Also in psychological well-being, watching Korean drama has an

impact to the students because they tend to think in a way that they will have a love life just like in

the Korean drama, use their Korean idol as an inspirations and willing to learn and apply the

language of Korea.

In emotional well-being, many students incline to show their feelings in different ways

because of the emotions they feel when watching Korean drama. The students easily carried

away, sometimes feel impatient and say that Korean drama scene or ending affects their

emotions for the day.
