RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

This chapter presents the results and discussion of the development and

evaluation of the Automated Coconut Extractor. Ten (10) trials were conducted to test

the efficiency of the device. The researcher recorded the device’s performance to

determine the success in executing its efficiency.

Development of the Automated Coconut Extractor

All the equipment and materials needed to build the automated coconut extractor

such as angle bar, flat bar, linear actuator, connecting wires, pcb, Arduino Nano, push

button, IR sensor, and etc. were gathered. It was built at the machine shop with help of

the welder; the researcher started the construction of the machine. The fabrication of

the machine lasted for a month. Shown below in Fig. 20 is the circular blade of the

machine using flat bar.

Fig. 10 shows the main circuit of the device. When the power switch is on, it will

process and initialize the input commands given by the program.

Schematic Diagram of the Device

Fig. 13 shows the schematic diagram of the device. The device’s microcontroller,

Arduino Uno, had served as the brain of the device and was powered by a power

supply. The Arduino Uno is the main component and was in-charge of processing the

inputs from the button (start, emergency, backward, forward), IR sensor (drop sensor),

and position sensor (limit sensor) which can also be seen in the diagram. It is also the

one in control of processing again the command it had received from the other

components mentioned through the LCD which had displayed the processes. An

actuator was also present in the device which was connected to the motor driver that

was run by another power supply.

Evaluation of the Automated Coconut Extractor

The device was tested ten (10) times to evaluate its efficiency. Tables 1

shows the results of the evaluation. All trials were successful in achieving the device’s

purpose.

Table 1. shows the comparison between the results of the volume of the 1kg coconut

meat extracted using conventional method and using the device. The results found that

the developed device has more volume of the juice extracted compared to that of the

conventional method. The volume from the device ranged from 396 ml to 410 ml in

comparison to the conventional method with lesser volume which only just varied from

328 ml to 350 ml which were all extracted from a 1kg of coconut meat per trial. The

results therefore implied that the automated coconut extractor is more efficient in terms

of volume.

Table 3 shows the comparison between the results of the consumed time on

extracting of 1kg coconut meat using conventional method and using the device. Based

on the trials that the researcher had evaluated, the mean of the conventional method in

terms of time (minutes), 1.651, is much longer than that of the developed device which

is 1.337 min. which can be found on table 4. Conventional method had range of 1.35 to

2.30 compared to the developed device which varied from 1.27 to 1.40. Clearly, it

implied that the processing time of the device is more consistent and shorter compared

to the conventional method; and also, result implied that it is surely more efficient to use

the developed device because the user can save more time and makes it more

convenient.

SUMMARY, CONCLUSIONS, AND RECOMMENDATIONS

Summary

The device that was assembled from the study “Automated Coconut Extractor:

Development, Implementation and Evaluation” was developed from January 2019 to

April 2019 at Diego Silang, St., Kabacan, Cotabato and was evaluated at the same

place.

The system was designed to automate a coconut extractor to extract the coconut

in a more convenient and easy way. The system was analyzed using t-test for the mean

of the coconut extractor to determine the significant difference between the conventional

method and the device.

The general objective of the study was to develop an Automated Coconut

Extractor. Specially, the study aimed to: (1) develop an auto-mechanical device that can

grate coconut meat and extract juice out from it and (2) to evaluate the efficiency of the

device in terms of (a) the amount of meat grated to the amount of juice extracted per

coconut fruit using the device, and compare it to the efficiency in conventional (manual)

method; and (b) The amount of time consumed in processing of grating and extracting

coconut milk using the device, and compares it to the amount of time consumed in the

same process using conventional method or manual machine.

In order to evaluate the efficiency of the device, the researcher came up to an

idea to compare the device and the conventional method. The result of the comparison

showed that the device had successfully performed its efficiency.

Conclusion

Based on the results of the study, the following conclusions were drawn:

1. The device can be easily operated by the user.

2. The device that was developed is effective in terms of good accuracy and

efficient in extracting coconut.

3. The results found that the device was more efficient to use compared to the

conventional method.

Recommendations

Based on the findings of the researcher during the implementation and

evaluation of the device, the following are recommended for future references

and studies:

1. The current design of the device is strenuous when putting the coconut

meat because the opening or the entryway of the coconut chamber is

smaller so it is recommended to improve it.

2. It is also recommended that the device should also have an automatic

grater along with the automated extractor so that it will be a fully

automated device; and also, in order for the device to just supply the

extracted milk without any human/user labor.

3. Consider changing the casing of the components into more stable

materials for durability and also for the device to attain a longer life span.
