Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

“Much will be required of the person entrusted with much.” We have been blessed with
abundance. Yet, we are tempted to want even more. A Christian family reaches out to others.
Pope Francis recommends experiencing “the happiness of giving, the nobility and grandeur of
spending ourselves unstintingly, without asking to be repaid, purely for the pleasure of giving
and serving.” The Joy of Love #94. How are you and your family doing?
381 Holy Hours were kept before the Blessed Sacrament this past week. “There is
power in the Eucharist. It is Jesus who walked the earth as our teacher….the same
Jesus who died, rose from the dead, and ascended into heaven as our Savior. It is
the glorified Jesus who transcends time and space. He is the healer of my soul…and
he yearns to be the healer of yours.” (Matthew Kelly) Our Lord gives us 168 hours a week to do
as we want with them. Use just one of these to change your life forever. Call 330-690-9661.
We have a vacancy Tuesday, 11am to noon.

Please pray for our Sick especially: Betty Bartel, Lisa Gnap, Judy Kriston, Anne

Pastor’s Formed Pick of the Week: “Edith Stein”

This is a moving, artistic portrayal of the life of Jewish philosopher, Catholic convert, and
Carmelite martyr, Edith Stein. It captures the interior struggles of this extraordinary woman, as
well as the great conflicts from her decision to convert to Catholicism. Deeply influenced by the
writings of St. Teresa of Avila, she joined the Carmelites, took the name of Teresa Benedicta of
the Cross, was put to death in Auschwitz in 1942, and canonized by John Paul II in 1998. This
film shows how two worlds, the Jewish and the Christian, were united within her in absolute
coherence in her search for truth. She has become one of the most beautiful symbols in a
horrifying period of history because she sought to transform her sufferings under the Nazis into
a journey through the “interior castle” as the way to mystical union with God. One phrase, “love
conquers fear,” embodies her philosophy of life. Shot in a kind of rich expressionist realism, it’s
backed by poignant chant music that makes every frame haunting and alive. This is truly a
powerful and moving movie!

Christ’s Peace!

The August book selection is the Pulitzer Prize award-winning novel Gilead by
Marilynn Robinson; it was also chosen as one of the 100 Great American Reads
by PBS this past spring. It tells the story-in journal-memoir form- of the life of dying
Congregationalist minister Rev. John Ames. He wrote it for his seven-year-old son
who he hopes will remember the lessons Ames tries to relate to him. Join us at
1pm on Thursday, August 7 to discuss the book. The September selection is Rocket Boys
(Hickham). Call Anne Sweeney (330-825-6302) for additional information.
