Sex ratio remained at 100 males per 100 females

Of the 770,596-household population of Zamboanga City in 2007,

there was almost equal distribution of males (49.9 percent) and females (50.1
percent). This translated to a sex ratio of one male for every one female. The
same sex ratio was recorded in 2000.

Half of the population of Zamboanga City were below 21 years old

The household population of Zamboanga City had a median age of 21

years, which means that half of the household population were below 21 years
old. This median age is one year higher than the median age of 20 years
recorded in 2000.

13
The age group 0 to 4 years comprised the highest share of 11.8 percent,
followed by age group 5 to 9 years (11.7 percent), and age groups 10 to 14 years and
15 to 19 years (each with 11.4 percent).

There were more males than females in the age bracket 0 to 14 years, while
there were more females than males in the age bracket 15 to 34 years.

Three out of five persons were of voting-age

Almost 60 percent of the household population of Zamboanga City were in

the voting age group (18 years old and over). The distribution of voting-age
population by sex was almost the same for males (49.6 percent) and females (50.4
percent).

Overall dependency ratio decreased to 62 dependents per 100 persons in the working
age group

The proportion of household population in the working age group (15 to 64

years) was 61.9 percent, young dependents (0 to 14 years) comprised 34.9 percent,
and old dependents (65 years and over) was recorded at 3.2 percent.

The overall dependency ratio was 62, which means that for every 100 persons
in the working-age group, there were 62 dependents (57 young and 5 old dependents).
The decline in the overall dependency ratio is explained by the decrease in the ratio of
young dependents to the population of working age, from 62 to 57 young dependents
for every 100 persons of working age.

Never-married persons comprised more males than females

About 45 percent of the household population 10 years old and over in 2007
were never married while 43.5 percent were married. The rest of the population were
either widowed, divorced/separated, in common law/live-in marital arrangement, or
had no report on marital status. Among never-married persons, there were more
males (52.3 percent) than females (47.7 percent). Females outnumbered the males in
the rest of the categories for marital status.

More females had attained higher levels of education

Of the household population 5 years old and over, 36.2 percent had attended
or finished elementary education and 26.5 percent had reached or completed high

14
school. The proportion of academic degree holders was 10.2 percent, an increase of
6.6 percentage points from the 2000 figure (3.6 percent).

More females had attained higher levels of education than males. The
proportion of females among academic degree holders and those with post
baccalaureate courses were 52.0 percent and 53.0 percent, respectively.

Among the household population 5 to 24 years old, three-fifths (60.7 percent)

attended school at any time during the School Year 2007 to 2008. The school
attendance among males (60.7) and females (60.6 percent) was nearly equal during
the said school year.

Ratio of households to occupied housing units increased to 103

From a total of 114,782 occupied housing units in 2000, the number of

occupied housing units reached 149,622 in 2007, indicating an increase of 30.4
percent. The number of households for every 100 occupied housing units was 103 in
2007, higher than the ratio of 102 households for every 100 occupied housing units in
2000. In terms of the number of persons per occupied housing unit, a ratio of 5.2
persons was recorded in 2007 and 2000.

Use of light materials as outer walls remained high

The proportion of occupied housing units in Zamboanga City with outer

walls made of wood dropped from 43.2 percent in 2000 to 38.9 percent in 2007. But
the use of bamboo/sawali/cogon/nipa slightly increased from 23.5 percent in 2000 to
23.8 in 2007. For occupied housing units with outer walls made of
concrete/brick/stone, an increase of 2.7 percent was recorded.

Majority (68.6 percent) of the occupied housing units in 2007 had roofs made
of galvanized iron/aluminum. The use of cogon/nipa/Ana haw for the roof decreased
from 28.4 percent in 2000 to 22.5 percent in 2007.
