INSTRUCTIONS: Fabrication and erection of carbon and ferritic steel Standard 4S-01.01
pressure piping

Pipe line field erection, checking, testing and cleaning Standard 4S-20.01
specification

Coating and lining of steel piping and materials Standard 4S-30.04

Installation of underground pipes Standard 4S-31.01

Instrument fittings for steel pipe Standard 4D-10.02

NOTES: 1. All listed standards and specifications shall conform to the latest edition.

2. For above ground installation, pipe and fittings shall be cleaned and painted in accordance with
the project painting specifications or as specified on construction drawings.

3. For underground installation, pipe and fittings shall be coated in accordance with Standard
4S-30.04. Underground installation shall conform to Standard 4S-31.01.

4. Includes the use of swaged nipples in any combination of ends within the confines of this class
sheet. See Design Standard 4D-03.02.

5. Pipe manufactured to more stringent standards, (i.e., L5 etc.), but rejected due to some non-
conformity with those standards, may be acceptable for underground water supply and
distribution. (Surplus pipe from the oil and gas industry is frequently an economical source).
Resize pipe ends to match as required. Such pipe shall be approved by the Area Project
Engineer.

6. Joints in pipe and fittings 2” and less and installed underground shall be socket welded.
Threaded connections are acceptable for above ground installation.

7. Fittings 18” and larger may be fabricated in accordance with 2S-01.02, if approved by the Area
Project Engineer for a particular installation.

8. Gate valves shall only be installed when specified on drawings. Directly buried butterfly valves
with appropriate gear operator, with 2” square operating nut and valve box (4D-13.01) shall be
the standard installation, unless otherwise specified on drawings.

9. Butterfly valves shall be installed with stem in horizontal position and the bottom of the disk
opening against the direction of the water flow.

10. When used for the installation of butterfly valves, the ID of flanges shall be equal to the ID of
standard weight carbon steel pipe, to ensure that the built-in gasket/seal of butterfly valves is
well supported.

11. Knife gates with resilient seals must be bidirectional.

12. Couplings shall be supplied to match the OD of the pipe ends within the tolerances specified by
coupling manufacturer. If such couplings are not available, the pipe ends shall be re-sized.
