Here are some tips

to help you use technology

Whatever the current iteration,
whatever the toolset
To connect with people.
THEMES

Communicate Your Values
"ve it Away
Seek Unusual Partners
Practice the Art of the Tangi#e
Make Real Connections
themes
 Communicate Your Values
1.  Identify 5 core values of your project/business/brand/identity

// if you don’t have values, I can’t help you

2.  Write these values down, and use them as a guiding force when

crafting social media texts and interactions.

// e.g. “Helpful” – be sure to answer questions on Twitter

“Supports local economy” – reflect that in purchasing

Takehome
You only have so much time. Make sure

that your social media outreach is
optimized to reflect your values. Create a
visceral association between yourself and a
value – invaluable in a reputation economy.
themes
 "ve It Away
1.  Give away three times as much as you’d like to get in return.

//Be gracious. Do the favor. Send the introductory email.

RT that link. Offer advice, send an encouragement.

Takehome
It takes a village, right? Build a tribe that is

willing to do YOU a favor when the time
comes … one favor at a time. Don’t be
snotty – person x might be connected in
ways you aren’t aware of.
themes

Seek Unusual Partners
1.  Be where the buzz is by selecting unusual partners for collaboration.

Think juxtaposition, contrast, alliteration and other techniques to

create unusual pairings. Remember – in-person events often trump

the virtual.

Takehome
People like the shiny. Give ’em something

new and memorable; an experience they
can’t get elsewhere.
themes
Practice the Art of the Tangi#e
1.  Virtual is free. It’s instant. It’s overused. Set yourself apart

from the pack with a hybridized strategy. Give away prizes

with Facebook comments. Arrange for a real-life mixer.

Send physical mail on occasion.

Use the AFFORDANCES OF THE MEDIUM – web when it needs to be

instant, tangible when it makes sense.

Takehome
How many Facebook event invitations did

you get last month? How many paper
invitations did you get last year? It’s not
practical for everything, but chose a few
ways to connect with tangibles.
themes
 Make Real Connections
1.  Networking is for suckers? Yeah, if you suck at it. Seek out

“UnSucky Networking” opportunities – be yourself, and think

longterm. Communicate real-life sympatico via the webz.

Takehome
We all know THAT person. 2,000

Facebook friends – none of whom know
her in real life. Or worse – the Foursquare
mayoral whore. Find things you actually
have in common with others, and use the
web to stay in touch with them.
