PowerDesigner: A Perfect Fit for TOGAF

Frameworks help de-mystify the complex process of building and maintaining your enterprise architecture. The Open Group Architecture Framework
(TOGAF) in particular provides a model and a set of tools that encompass best practices in architecture development.
If your organization is using TOGAF as a guide to develop your enterprise architecture, PowerDesigner is the best tool to help you fulfill your vision.
PowerDesigner’s set of tools help you not only document your enterprise architecture, but also link the relevant parts together. Additionally, framework
implementation is easier than ever with the Framework Designer, released as part of version 15 of PowerDesigner.
This datasheet explains how PowerDesigner complements TOGAF by providing an extensible metamodel, dependency mapping, and a central repository
that help you realize a return on your investment faster, and achieve optimal business results.

PowerDesigner and TOGAF

The TOGAF methodology gives you a 360° view. It leads you through looking at your organization from different perspectives, taking the time to consider
your business strategies, applications, data and technology, as well as how they intersect. TOGAF also supplies a process and taxonomy that help everyone
on the enterprise architecture team to work in the same way, according to the same guidelines, which helps ensure the highest-quality end product.
PowerDesigner is a great fit for TOGAF practitioners for two primary reasons. First, it allows you to define and describe any deliverable or document set
that’s part of TOGAF, including sets for business or technology, models for information architecture, and multi-step processes. PowerDesigner gives you the
right metamodel for the right use at the right time.
Second, PowerDesigner’s unique Link & Sync technology can track dependencies between deliverables: between data and processes, applications and
technology. Capture the links between all the different aspects of your organization, and you’ll ensure that you accurately represent those dependencies —
and maintain them through multiple generations of your enterprise architecture.
Within PowerDesigner, you can easily transform business perspectives to technology perspectives to implementation perspectives, while maintaining
each model’s purpose and perspective. At the same time, PowerDesigner automatically captures the lineage of each model, which gives us the traceability
we need to use the enterprise architecture for impact analysis, gap analysis, and support for planning and mapping activities.

Extensible Metamodel
PowerDesigner includes built-in standards from TOGAF 9 and the software’s extensible metamodel makes it easy to use with any framework. Architects
can extend any metaclass or create any new artifact to conform to your framework by further extending the extension.
PowerDesigner’s extensible metamodel makes it easy to create an ‘in house’ framework. Architects can expand upon any metaclass or create any new
artifact to conform to your framework by creating a simple extension.
In fact, most PowerDesigner models are implemented using this same simple extension, because the mechanism provided is the same one used to build
PowerDesigner. It’s an integrated component; not a patched-on accessory.
Also worth noting, using the extensions doesn’t require programming experience. PowerDesigner provides a set of tools with an easy-to-use graphical
interface to help you through the process.

Dependency Mapping
All of the different deliverables in TOGAF relate to each other in a certain way, defined by The Open Group. PowerDesigner’s Link & Sync technology allows
for easy dependency tracking between these deliverables using a matrix or transformation engine.
These dependencies are critical components of the enterprise architecture. Changes to any of the components must be reflected within all the
dependencies or the system breaks down. PowerDesigner’s Link & Sync tracks all dependencies and allows users to understand the impact of change to
any component within the EA. For example, if you need to change your organization’s definition of “customer.”, you need to know which business processes
use “customer”, which applications are involved, where your customer data is stored, and what regulations govern its use. If you didn’t know all of that, you
couldn’t easily and effectively change the definition of “customer”, without significant risk and cost to the enterprise.
When you build your EA in PowerDesigner, it’s easy to map all of these things together, and do it according to the TOGAF standard.

Central Repository
PowerDesigner stores all your architectural artifacts in a central repository, which provides three essential services to your EA effort. First, it’s a reliable
place to keep all of the knowledge in your organization together, so that you know where it’s at when it’s time to make a change or a decision.
Second, the repository facilitates team design. It allows many people to work on the same models and documents at the same time (providing
version control and a history of changes). The repository ensures that all of your work is performed on a single source of truth. You won’t have the
misunderstandings and poor decisions that result from multiple versions and old information.
Third, the repository provides a source for analytics. It gives you a place to collect all the metadata that serves as a source for the answers your
organization needs, including:
• The impact of potential changes
• The differences between current and future states of your EA
• What you need to do to transform the business, from both a business and IT perspective

Conclusion
TOGAF gives you a ‘best-practice organizational framework’ for enterprise architecture. PowerDesigner gives you the best tool to effectively build the
architecture itself, plus the Link & Sync technology that provides the robust analytical capability your organization needs.
PowerDesigner’s extensible model, dependency mapping and central repository give you the ability to receive all the benefits from a fully realized
enterprise architecture that can evolve with your business.
PowerDesigner delivers a faster ROI, and beyond that, it can help you radically improve the way your organization comprehends and manages business
transformation.
