Using PowerDesigner®
product datasheet
Extensible Metamodel
PowerDesigner includes built-in standards from TOGAF 9 and the software’s extensible metamodel makes it easy to use with any framework. Architects
can extend any metaclass or create any new artifact to conform to your framework by further extending the extension.
PowerDesigner’s extensible metamodel makes it easy to create an ‘in house’ framework. Architects can expand upon any metaclass or create any new
artifact to conform to your framework by creating a simple extension.
In fact, most PowerDesigner models are implemented using this same simple extension, because the mechanism provided is the same one used to build
PowerDesigner. It’s an integrated component; not a patched-on accessory.
Also worth noting, using the extensions doesn’t require programming experience. PowerDesigner provides a set of tools with an easy-to-use graphical
interface to help you through the process.

Dependency Mapping
All of the different deliverables in TOGAF relate to each other in a certain way, defined by The Open Group. PowerDesigner’s Link & Sync technology allows
for easy dependency tracking between these deliverables using a matrix or transformation engine.
These dependencies are critical components of the enterprise architecture. Changes to any of the components must be reflected within all the
dependencies or the system breaks down. PowerDesigner’s Link & Sync tracks all dependencies and allows users to understand the impact of change to
any component within the EA. For example, if you need to change your organization’s definition of “customer.”, you need to know which business processes
use “customer”, which applications are involved, where your customer data is stored, and what regulations govern its use. If you didn’t know all of that, you
couldn’t easily and effectively change the definition of “customer”, without significant risk and cost to the enterprise.
When you build your EA in PowerDesigner, it’s easy to map all of these things together, and do it according to the TOGAF standard.
Central Repository
PowerDesigner stores all your architectural artifacts in a central repository, which provides three essential services to your EA effort. First, it’s a reliable
place to keep all of the knowledge in your organization together, so that you know where it’s at when it’s time to make a change or a decision.
Second, the repository facilitates team design. It allows many people to work on the same models and documents at the same time (providing
version control and a history of changes). The repository ensures that all of your work is performed on a single source of truth. You won’t have the
misunderstandings and poor decisions that result from multiple versions and old information.
Third, the repository provides a source for analytics. It gives you a place to collect all the metadata that serves as a source for the answers your
organization needs, including:
• The impact of potential changes
• The differences between current and future states of your EA
• What you need to do to transform the business, from both a business and IT perspective
Conclusion
TOGAF gives you a ‘best-practice organizational framework’ for enterprise architecture. PowerDesigner gives you the best tool to effectively build the
architecture itself, plus the Link & Sync technology that provides the robust analytical capability your organization needs.
PowerDesigner’s extensible model, dependency mapping and central repository give you the ability to receive all the benefits from a fully realized
enterprise architecture that can evolve with your business.
PowerDesigner delivers a faster ROI, and beyond that, it can help you radically improve the way your organization comprehends and manages business
transformation.
